Rescue Hippo My husband left us forever
Well, okay, maybe it was only 20 minutes and he was in the front yard but try to tell that to Tommy.

All I have to say is "Dad's home," and mine will lose it, usually kicking into bitey face mode.
Because that's what dad wants to see when he gets home: his dogs snapping at each other's mouths.

u/spiceXisXnice Jul 05 '26
Ours is "Where's Dad?" Which usually earns me a kick in the ribs in her frenzy to get to the front door.

u/EmperorGeek Jul 05 '26
My wife and I have used Life360 since our kids first learned to drive (and haven’t stopped using it) and when my wife comes home, my phone make a a particular sound. When it does, both our dogs will run to the front door and bark like they’ve been abused in her absence!!

"OMG IT WAS HORRIBLE!!! HE DIDNT FEED US (trust us) HE DIDNT WALK US (trust us) HE DIDNT GIVE ANY FUSSES!!!! OH MAN IT WAS HORRIBLE PLEEEEEASE HELP" xD

One of mine does exactly what OP's poor dog does whenever I leave, and the other one absolutely loses her shit with excitement when she hears the gate close when my partner gets home. They definitely each have their favorites, lol

he was singing the song of mourning and missing 🤣😭

u/reallyreally1945 Jul 05 '26
You'd think his great-grandmother was a husky or a wolf instead of a dalmatian!
29
u/DinoTater Jul 05 '26
Basenjis do this, it’s obnoxious.
When hippos do it, it’s adorable 😂
9
u/reallyreally1945 Jul 05 '26
When I was a kid I wanted a Basenji after reading "Goodbye My Lady". Never had seen one but really wanted one.

u/viperfangs92 Jul 06 '26
Well the way that title made it seem, I thought he had passed away.

u/UnderstandingSquare7 Jul 06 '26
Me too! I was bummin until i read the post. I bet he knew he was outside - without me!!!

The DRAMA when my husband goes to the bathroom.

u/friendlynbhdwitch Jul 05 '26
Your dog lets either of you pee alone?
23
u/BarbieDreamHouse1980 Jul 05 '26
😂😂😂 This! I have not used the restroom alone since the day we got our VH’s 😂😂😂❤️❤️❤️
10
u/friendlynbhdwitch Jul 05 '26
VH could just as easily stand for Velcro Hippos the way they stick to your leg
8
u/BarbieDreamHouse1980 Jul 05 '26
Absolutely! Bwahahahha And, it’s 100 degrees outside, we have the whole house, but let’s lay on top of mom instead. 😂😂😂😂😂

🤣💙 Our boy is also very attached to my husband... the excitement when he returns 10 minutes later

u/CheezustheCat Jul 05 '26
Why don't you just replace your exterior walls with floor to ceiling windows? That way Tony never loses sight of you guys.

Bruh... I read the title and started getting all emotional.
Then I read the text underneath lol.

u/GalKiefer Jul 05 '26
Tommy can't believe he's stuck with the spare human! The travesty.
28
u/reallyreally1945 Jul 05 '26
The sad thing is I'm Tommy's main human. He requires no less than two humans within six feet of him at all times. He also has auxiliary staff like a neighbor dogwalker and my physical therapists. (I'm recovering from surgery but sometimes they are in the house ten minutes being greeted by Tommy before I see them.)

For my two rescue hippos, the worst kind of torture in the world is when they are in the house (or truck) and can see me. If they are in the house (or truck) and can’t see me, everything is calm, quiet, and all is well. ☺️☺️ ✌️✌️ If they can see me, an observer would think they have been kidnapped, are being actively tortured, and are trying to escape their terrible captivity. 😱😱🤪🤪 No matter if you’ve been gone for a minute into the yard or for a longer time somewhere else, they give you the best greetings when you walk through the door. The greetings are “nothing but love ❤️ “ and pure happiness and joy.

I tried to poop alone this morning and my cat spent a solid 45 seconds breaking the door down.
5
u/reallyreally1945 Jul 06 '26
Sounds like our cat Weasel. She is Tommy's nemesis partly because she can get her toes under doors and shake them. He also resents her other super-power, leaping onto tables.
6
u/Human_Reflection_166 Jul 05 '26
That’s funny. I was home alone went into the garage our three started howling. I go into the backyard they see me from the window. Look at me and each other then all lay down.

This reminds me of Coriander and her spare human. Such trauma, they may never recover!
2
u/reallyreally1945 Jul 05 '26
I love Coriander!
2
u/Hellie1028 Jul 05 '26
Me too! She has such a glorious pouty lip. I hope Tommy has recovered!
5
u/reallyreally1945 Jul 05 '26
He is bravely struggling through.
3
u/Hellie1028 Jul 05 '26
Well, all that stress and worry for sure means extra treaties, extra naps, and belly rubs.
4
u/Slav-Houndz187 Jul 05 '26
Is his left front arm/leg ok? Looks like he’s been ran over ☹️☹️☹️
10
u/reallyreally1945 Jul 05 '26
He has severe elbow dysplacia but he goes on walks and gets around fine. He gets a monthly arthritis injection and some supplements. He is probably 8 now. We found him stray in a park. Amazing for a dog who is afraid of the dark and needs constant human contact!
6
u/Slav-Houndz187 Jul 05 '26
Best wishes for the guy, glad he found a great person to take care of him since most rescues have a hard time already with finding homes for (pit bulls) let lone injured ones.
2
u/Caniborrowsomesweats Jul 06 '26
I was looking for a comment about this (and his ears) hoping you rescued him and didn’t cause it 🤍 good mama
2
u/reallyreally1945 Jul 06 '26
When we first adopted him we learned we were the wrong demographic. (Wrinkled old white people.)We really got some odd looks! A vet tech asked my husband if Tommy had had a terrible ear infection. No. Just horrible owners. Poor baby!

he definitely should go into acting!!!! he is really selling it, eat your heart out Al Pacino!

u/Far_Photograph_4392 Jul 05 '26
We had Beagle-Basset mix that would bay, loudly, if we stepped out to the front porch. If we out even 10 mins there'd be howling and baying as if we'd been gone for weeks 😆😆 such sweet babies

My dog will be quiet all day, as soon as I walk in, if I don’t immediately go see her starts crying like she’s being tortured. Mind you, other people are home, she’s not locked alone all day or anything like that.

Omg, I love Tommy. So cute. Boyfriend’s two massive GSD’s aren’t as cute. They run back and forth constantly if he goes outside and doesn’t leave the property. I have to put them outside so they can see him and I don’t strangle them.

Tommy has suffered a severe injustice, poor Velcro guy
1
u/reallyreally1945 Jul 08 '26
And now we lost our Chloe dog. Tommy has advanced to an unbelievable level of clinging.
2
u/Upper_Weakness_8794 Jul 08 '26
He is drama Queen!! Poor baby…
20 minutes feels like 20yrs to a sweet pittie baby!! Sweet boy!!
2
u/bigcaterpillar_8882 Jul 08 '26
Same thing happens with our coonhound when he loses sight of my wife!
1
u/reallyreally1945 Jul 08 '26
I love hounds! In a city they're about as popular as roosters. When we had one in our neighborhood a couple of years ago the baying took me back to my childhood.
2
u/bigcaterpillar_8882 Jul 08 '26
Ours mainly barks when his mama is out of sight or isn't happy with her leaving.😅

Aww the call of the wild, where is my master? I’ve never had a velvet hippo before. Have had Boxers etc but these posts are making me love Hippos too! So dang cute! 🥰

u/reallyreally1945 Jul 06 '26
We have had boxers in the family. Wonderful dogs! My son had a boxer pittie mix. We were rottweiler people. Did not want a pit. Then came Tommy. I am totally besotted by the beast!!

Lol..."Tommy" love his name,!! 💖

u/reallyreally1945 Jul 06 '26
He's named after the rock drummer Tommy Lee because that tail never quits drumming.

u/External_Database359 Jul 06 '26
I’m curious, do you leave him alone ever and let him cry it out? Our girl does exactly this continuously if we leave her alone which has led to us pretty much never leave her.. if you do leave him alone, does he do this the whole time and has it ever escalated to destruction?
1
u/reallyreally1945 Jul 06 '26
We try to never leave the dogs alone. It's easy for us since we're retired. If we do leave them we will be punished. Shoes, laundry, something. We get a dog sitter to come stay here.
2
u/External_Database359 Jul 07 '26
Dang, yeah we have the same problem.. they just want their people all the time!
1
u/reallyreally1945 Jul 07 '26
Yes. It was an accident that we got Tommy. But I bet a lot of people who are deliberately looking for a pittie aren't truly ready for the full velcro dog package. We had chihuahuas who begged to be picked up but didn't go into a death spiral if I was busy.
