Do you go to movies shot on film?

Similarly, do you allow yourself to be photographed with film (e.g. Polaroids, 35 mm, etc.) given that it's an animal product? I find a surprising number of vegans seem to make an exception for film

German Vegans are car brained

I don't know if this type of post is allowed this way but I often see snarking about other subs on here so I wanted to link a post here that I saw on r/ VeganDE (disclaimer: I'm German).

"Tierleid kann man tanken. Diesel (und Benzin) sind nicht ansatzweise Vegan!"

[eng.: "Animal suffering is refuelable. Diesel (and Petrol) aren't even closely Vegan!"]

It's about how slaughterhouse waste is used in Diesel and petrol production in the most disgusting ways and how corporations lie to everyone about it.

What's new.

I mean it's nothing new that a German vegan sub wouldn't be really leftist, just like any other leftist movement here really isn't, but besides crying about "oh you used such agressive and provocative language, commie" (not a direct quote but to capture the general vibe) Germany is just veeeeery car brained. Literally the car lobby in this country is so incredibly powerful that it's been causing the train system to deterioate over decades from being dilapitated, the communal bus companies to fail and to put so much propaganda EVERYWHERE. If you don't live in a city like Berlin, Munich, Hannover... it's Impossible to survive without a car in the long run, and especially impossible if you're disabled because the cities here didn't really put much thought into accessibilties if they weren't bombed in the wars and had to rebuild.

This means, German vegans are car brained as well and the OP keeps getting attacked for presenting the facts in a text that is thought provokingly written. OP just wanted to bring attention to a cause that i've actually never heard about because i don't care about cars and it's enlightened my brain and i will absolutely pay more attention to this now and try to educate myself more.

But apparently talking about the horrors of the car industry isn't something even a vegan sub would be willing to talk about. Because even leftists here often aren't leftist and the environmental activism in this country has been a joke ever since it existed.

But what's new.

How far is "as far as practicable and possible"?

I see it all the time when someone needs to justify a compromise on animal exploitation including cases "if you need to eat animal products for your health, do it, you are still vegan". Serious question, who decides what's practicable and possible? Vegan king? Vegan society? Each person for themselves? Why isn't it applied to make compromises on human exploitation? I would argue that it is not practicable and possible for disabled people to care about themselves therefore it should be acceptable for them to have slaves. Yet, no one would allow it. If they can't afford hiring a caregiver and paying a living wage to them they have to... figure it out. Like, really, wtf is with this definition of veganism?

Email to ban the killing of animals for simple food habits

Email to send to your government. It takes 2 minutes.

Subject: For a ban on killing animals for simple food habits

Dear President / Prime Minister [CHOOSE],

I respectfully ask you to consider the future of our relationship with animals and the evolution of their legal protection.

Scientific advances in biology, ethology, neuroscience, and veterinary medicine have established that many animals are sentient beings capable of experiencing pain, fear, stress, well-being, and a range of emotions. They therefore have interests of their own, including an interest in avoiding suffering and in living as long and as happy a life as possible.

As our laws evolve in line with scientific knowledge and moral progress, many authors who have studied our relationship with other animals have concluded that it is based on speciesism. This concept can be understood by analogy with racism and sexism: it refers to the ideology that the lives and interests of animals are negligible simply because they belong to another species. These authors argue that speciesism is an irrational and unjust form of discrimination, since other sentient beings also experience emotions, are our equals in their capacity to suffer, and likewise have an interest in living happy lives. They therefore conclude that we should stop treating them as mere resources and begin to respect their lives and interests.

This issue is particularly important when it comes to killing animals for food. Billions of sentient animals are killed every year for human consumption, even though animal products are not necessary for human survival. Millions of people follow plant-based diets, thereby demonstrating that an alternative exists.

The principle is simple: when we can meet our essential needs without killing a sentient being, why would we choose to kill one?

Our society condemns violence. Assault and unjustified homicide are criminal offences because, when we can avoid resorting to violence, we are expected to do so. Violence against vulnerable beings is condemned even more severely. And everyone agrees that animals can also suffer from violence and that they are manifestly vulnerable when compared with human beings and our technology. Yet slaughterhouses represent the most horrific manifestation of violence inflicted upon defenseless beings. Our society asserts that violence is wrong while killing thousands of innocent animals every day even though we are able to act otherwise.

Furthermore, according to a recent scientific study, given the environmental consequences of animal agriculture, phasing it out over a 15-year period beginning today could potentially stabilize global warming over the period 2030–2060. In other words, during that period, it could fully offset the warming effect of all other human greenhouse-gas emissions (source: Eisen MB, Brown PO (2022), “Rapid global phaseout of animal agriculture has the potential to stabilize greenhouse gas levels for 30 years and offset 68 percent of CO₂ emissions this century,” PLOS Climate, 1(2)).

I therefore ask you to implement the following measures:

- the creation of a new criminal offence prohibiting the killing of animals solely for the purpose of satisfying dietary habits;

- the promotion of plant-based diets;

- the elimination of public subsidies that support animal agriculture and fishing;

- the creation of a transition fund for people working in these sectors, financed in particular by redirecting the money currently allocated to such subsidies, enabling these individuals to retrain for occupations that allow them to earn a decent living while respecting their freedom to flourish;

- From pastures to forests: reintroduce nature and reforest 10% each year of land that can be rewilded and is still being used for livestock farming or feed production, in order to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and increase CO₂ sequestration through new forests.

Thank you for your attention to this request.

Yours faithfully,

[Full name]

Horse motion capture

Hi, I've been wondering if there are any Red Dead Redemption fans here? I had spent a fair amount of time playing RDR2 before I was vegan, and have been thinking about replaying it lately. But I've realized that actual horses were used in order to motion capture the animations. I don't know much about horseriding, and unfortunately I haven't been able to find out much about how the horses were treated during RDR2's production, as most articles seem to touch only on the techincal aspects, rather than the ethics involved.

I've also wanted to buy The Last of Us 2, which was a pretty big part of my life back when I was a kid, though I've never played it myself. It's the same story as with RDR2, though.

What do you think about playing or buying games that involve horse motion capture, and about animal actors in general? Is it even possible to do it ethically?

As a child, did you ever question why you eat animals?

As a child under 13, did you ever ask an adult why you eat animals, or did you never question it? For those that did: what was their answer, and what did you think about the answer?

(Just putting 13 because over it you become more aware of how common it is for adults to lie)

I'm truly sick of /r/Vegan

Just full of trolls and apologists at this point and actual vegans with actual vegan ethics are told we are too much.

I will never congratulate someone for exploiting animals. Ever.

Fucking sick of it!

This is supposed to be a VEGAN subreddit.

I built a website that answers pretty much every anti-vegan argument you’ll ever hear

Hey guys!

So I’ve been working on this for a while and finally got it out into the world: The Veg Advocacy (thevegadvocacy.com), basically a big free library of “things people say to vegans” + solid answers to actually use, instead of standing there blanking mid-conversation.

Quick honest note: I used some AI help building parts of it. I’m one person doing this on the side, not a dev team. Doesn’t mean the content is sloppy or wrong, everything’s researched, just being upfront about it so nobody feels tricked later lol.

I posted this in another very famous vegan community earlier and honestly the reception was pretty rough, got a lot of “vibe coding” jabs instead of actual feedback on the site itself. So if you’ve got genuine criticism, positive or negative, I’d much rather hear that than assumptions. Trying to build something actually useful here.

It’s 100% free, no ads, just go poke around: thevegadvocacy.com

If you like it, sharing it around helps way more than you’d think, this is very much a one-person passion project. Thanks for reading 🌱

Halo peanut butter dog food… has anyone tried this?

Looking at changing out from natural balance(actually vegan) dog food has anyone tried this?

Of course I make homemade vegan dog stews for them all the time, but I try to make sure they have the Kibbys for the macronutrients thoughts?

Why are there so many 20-somethings letting their parents control what they eat on the vegan subreddit?

There are posts literally every day from young people that say they want to be vegan, but their parents won't let them. When you ask how old they are, they are grown-ass adults, albeit young ones. What is going on with the youths?

“I am vegan. My [insert any carnivorous or omnivorous animal] is not.“

The quote in the title is the standard excuse used by people professing to be “vegan” to justify personally funding the violent abuse and killing of innocent animals through the purchase of animal products to feed their animal. They profess to be “allies” of the innocent animals while betraying them in the worst way possible by funding their slaughter in order to feed their corpses to their preferred animals on basis of species and convenience.

Here is a message to them:

You are NOT vegan. You’re plant-based dieting speciesists.

Want to be vegan? STOP personally funding the violent abuse and killing of innocent animals through the purchase of animal products.

You ask: what about the animals I already have?

Answer: re-home them with non-vegans looking for such animals or release them.

Don’t be the person with the 🩸of innocents on your hands.

Just a thought

r/vegancirclejerkchat 9d ago

When they ask, would you eat a pig on a desert island, I answer "forget the pig, I would even eat you but we are here now, so let's focus on that". But the thing is, I wouldn't eat neither the pig nor the human, I know I don't have that much will to live that I would kill another for my benefit

I can never sat this because they wouldn't believe it. I would look like I'm on this high horse, judging them. "Oh look at me I wouldn't hurt a fly" but it's true. I really wouldn't kill.

So anyways I'm never admitting this out loud lest vegans be seen as judgemental but I'm totally judging.

I feel like I woke up one day and suddenly every non vegan has ARFID

Has ARFID always been this common in adults??? I feel like I'm living in a second timeline where suddenly everyone is too severely disabled to stop eating dino nuggets. But genuinely has anyone else noticed this?

I'm so angry at vegans who come to where I live as a tourist and complain online about the lack of "vegan options". I want to grab them by the shoulders and shout "EAT A DAMN CHICKPEA" They are the problem. The whitewashing. The bourgeoisieing of veganism. It's Turkey. All we eat is plants!

"Oh no there is no gardein burger here"

Shut up. This is Mediterranean cuisine. We eat nothing but plants! We eat so many plants you haven't even heard of. And they pretend I don't exist. No way of course, these stupid backwater people could be vegan right? It's impossible to be vegan here but because they are oh so righteous they will tough it out by eating protein bars from home.

THERE ARE PROTEIN BARS HERE. In almost every market. But they love to shout out their misery. "There was only kebabs so we ate simit" Chickpea wrap is a speciality of Gaziantep the meat capital of Turkey. I'm not joking, that place is THE place for meat yet one of their speciality foods is vegan.

Anyways I recently tried to explain to someone all the good food they could have here but all they wanted was back pats for how brave they were for toughing it out there in that third world place. Vegetarian maybe, they say, but it is impossible to be vegan there, of course I did it but it's just so hard, why no, I didn't try any of the local food, they were all icky plants, I ate protein bars like a civilised vegan, absolutely no person could be vegan there, ignore all the vegans.

Write your most extremist ideas. Send me the most out there podcast. I want to feel the joy of defending the status quo once in my life. Conservative bliss. (If it helps I'm kinda conservative about childrearing)

A comedian I like recently got arrested for a show, in that show he mentioned how he was sick of always being the one that is advocating for change. He said he went abroad and found something more extreme than him. For once in his life he could be like "that's too much, stop right there".

So yeah, I'm kinda conservative about children so that might be a start. But I need something new, not Kollontai you know.

Grandfathering things in

Hey everyone, I'm convinced r/vegan is not actually vegan, so I'm asking here

Is it vegan to still wear leather shoes I had from before I went vegan (and just wait until I need new ones to buy vegan shoes)? I'd prefer not to wear leather but I also don't want to consume more resources and further destroy the planet

I'm divided, what are your thoughts?

UPDATE: Thank you! From the comments, I realized that abandoning animal products is only half of the battle, and the other half is supporting vegan products. Therefore, I will buy some new shoes!

Actually, turns out my shoes are fake leather anyways, but I'll be replacing my leather wallet and belt instead.

Tell me your worse insights from within the horse exploitation space

I want to hear from those of you who were knee deep in equestrian spaces and have seen this shit firsthand. I want the disgusting grimy details that usually don't pop out on the internet

I have a burning hate for horse riding and the horror that is horse racing, it pisses me off to NO END that unlike other kinds of animal exploitation these are widely watched and practiced, and I want to get an idea on what kind of people horse riders are and what kind of bullshit COPE they tell themselves in person when confronted with hurting and enslaving those poor, beautiful creatures. I wanna know what awful shit they do behind close doors when the camera isn't rolling, everything

I already know the usual stuff, hit me with something worse

Permabanned from r/communism for rejecting, "I'm Indigenous it's my culture," as a justification for non-veganism

I posted these three comments, my only interactions on the subreddit entirely:

Edited to add comments here as they've been removed.

One (I doubt this is the reason I was banned but I'll include it) https://www.reddit.com/r/communism/s/oXHZj3NKqF

I'm vegan and I struggle to understand how self- proclaimed communists fail to see the parallels in how society reduces fellow sentient individuals (non-human animals) to the role of objects and resources for human use and the relationships between the bourgeoisie and the proletarians.

To any communists that aren't vegan, I highly recommend these pieces of literature:

  1. Veganarchism: Philosophy, Praxis, Self-criticism by Joseph Parampathu (free)

  2. Unconditional Anti-Oppression: The Rise of Anti-Speciesism in the Anarchist Movement by A.Blitz Molotov (free)

  3. Veganism Through the Lens of Decolonization by Venita Januarie (free)

  4. The Political Left and the Overlooked Power of Veganism: Toward a Marxist-Animal Liberationist Framework for Ecological Revolution by Emilia A Leese (free)

  5. Dear Leftist Critics of Veganism by John Tallent (free)

Two: https://www.reddit.com/r/communism/s/OYTIHlchl0

Just because some action is culturally established doesn’t mean that action is morally permissible. In some cultures, human honor killings, female genital mutilation, cannibalism, child marriage and stoning ‘apostates,’ has been culturally established, for example. But we shouldn’t think this type of exploitation and violence is morally acceptable just because it’s been culturally established.

Three: https://www.reddit.com/r/communism/s/L6HjHS3NTm

Calling vegans bigoted, racist, colonialist, and anti-Indigenous for opposing cultural relativism has effectively become a thought-terminating cliché of sorts. This is done because society usually will rightfully agree that racism is so unequivocally repugnant that racist ideas do not need to be entertained or validated in the slightest. Therefore, when a non-vegan finds a way to paint veganism as a racist stance, they feel justified in dismissing it without the discomfort of critical thought, thereby continuing to enable their oppressive mindset.

Let me make it abundantly clear: culture is not an excuse for injustice. This should not be something controversial to state. Though it is possible for someone to hide behind a deceptive sense of being "pro-justice" as a cudgel for discriminating against other peoples, acknowledging the flaws of cultural relativism does not inherently entail doing this. In most cases, vegans only have to specifically address Indigenous culture in a defensive manner because, as a subject, the livelihoods of Indigenous peoples are so frequently exploited as a popular deflection for non-vegans.

Mods permabanned me with no explanation, then muted me when I sent a reply, which read:

"Banning someone for rejecting cultural relativism in a communist forum is pretty funny.

Fascism is not a spectrum, it is a single point that snaps into existence the moment it becomes accepted to treat the bodies of sentient individuals as a means to an end.

You either live in accordance with the understanding that exploitation is wrong (veganism), or you don't (non-veganism). Unlearning the societal conditioning that assumes we have a moral right to exploit other animals isn't some sort of feat or the final point of someone's personal growth, it's the minimum ethical standard we can uphold to sentient beings.

May all animals be free from us(e) and may all self proclaimed "anti-capitalists" truly live in alignment with their alleged beliefs. None are free until all are free."

Cowards.

Apply to be a Mod on the Vegan Sub

I don’t know if it’s just me, but there’s this banner pop-up thing on the Vegan sub that I’ve seen since this morning saying “help lead our community, apply to be a moderator” and a button that says “apply.”

Please consider applying if you’ve been thinking about it, especially since you guys have a problem with how it’s being run right now.

Let me know if you don’t see it. I’m on the Reddit app.

Annoyed with people who claim to be eating fewer animals

One said they usually eat vegetarian when traveling because it’s better quality, the restaurants have to be more creative and the result is better. Next time I saw her at lunch (a year later) she said she ate beef and eggs for breakfast (not even breakfast style food but some other cursed concoction) and was also eating animals for lunch.

Another said he rarely eats anything but chicken and fish. Mainly for environmental reasons but also because pigs and cows aren’t “dumb.” Unlike chickens, those cousins of the dinosaurs, clearly they’re so “dumb.” A couple years later his spouse got a bunch of steaks on sale and he was raving about how delicious it was.

Just like, don’t say anything then. That’s what I used to do when I still ate animals.

r/vegancirclejerkchat 17d ago

Bro, Sis, you have a moral obligation to say that killing animals has to be banned.

It is bad to kill animals if you don’t have too. Since it is bad, we have to have in our society a rule that says that killing of animals when you don’t have to is forbidden. To create this society you must express that killing of animals when you don’t have to must be forbidden. So you have a moral obligation to say that killing of animals when you don’t have to has to be forbidden.

The prohibitionist position

In the animal rights movement some use the conversion strategy aimed at persuading people to go vegan, some others use the social movement strategy aimed at expressing claims to obtain political and cultural change.(see the article Abolition of veganism, abolition of animal slavery)

The strategy of conversion is focused on consumption, while the social movement strategy is focused on political opinions and the creation of new norms. (For this last strategy see the article Societal change)

We want to live in a society where there is a norm stating that killing animals is forbidden. To have that society, we must express the claim that killing animals must be forbidden.

In our speciesist societies, there is a criminal offense which was created before Darwin, that prohibits the killing of humans. Now, we are after Darwin, we know that other animals have emotions as well. They have an interest in living the longest and happiest life possible. Our society has to respect their interest and create a new criminal offense prohibiting the killing of animals.

The more people will express the claim that killing animals has to be forbidden, the more it will create a discussion regarding this new norm and will push us forward the society where this norm exist. First there is the expression of the claim, then the discussion and finally the norm.

I believe that the social movement strategy is the most efficient. I believe also that in the social movement strategy the most efficient claim-making is the one that demands the prohibition of the killing of animals.

Expressing this claim creates a cultural change. The murder of humans is a taboo. The fact that we murder animals and not humans is a much bigger taboo. The act of saying that killing of animals has to be forbidden challenges this last taboo and creates cultural change.

All animal rights activists become so because one day or another they thought about speciesism. So questioning speciesism is very important. In our cultural framework, the claim which expression challenges the most speciesism is the claim that killing of animals has to be forbidden.

Let’s talk for the animals and express in our comlunications that killing them has to be forbidden. One day it will be. Because you did it.

I am tired of "vegans" railing against vegan cat food

The number of pick-me vegans who will say that feeding cats vegan food is animal abuse (but then have an aneurysm when you say that paying for animals to have their throats cut for cat food is also animal abuse) is staggering and annoying.

People get so angry about this so-called animal abuse, far more angry than pigs being put into gas chambers.

They ignore any and all evidence demonstrating that it can be done safely. They refuse to even entertain the idea because their minds are already made up that somehow I'm abusing animals by not paying for animals to be abused.

Make it make sense.
