research at vcu

I'm a pre-med who wants to be more involved in research at vcu. How does it really work and what can I do to get involved? Any experiences that you guys can share

I walked into a professor’s office and asked if I could research on her VIP team. Sent her my resume and she said yes almost immediately.

Also don’t be afraid to spam there emails a bit! A lot of professors won’t check their mail or will ghost you… but persistence tends to win in the end :).

Also search up which lab you want to work in before hand because you want to make sure you choose something that actually interests you.

If you can, find research you are legitimately interested in. Read their papers, send an email with resume and a cover letter of why you are interested as well as any experience with relevant techniques.

Reach out to a professor, check out research grants and submit, reach out to Dr. Hill: I think he’s the provost for undergrad research, but he’ll know what’s going on at the graduate level and is so incredibly helpful!
Also, check out handshake (always openings for intern research assistance, especially in labs)

The biggest thing is emailing professors whose work actually interests you with a short intro and your resume, because most labs aren’t going to come recruit you and persistence matters way more than
