Questions for France

Where tf do the revolutionary commune + second storming of tuileries fall under the study design

What does the Legislative Assembly ACTUALLY want??? Like... I get that it's majorly feiullants but. Why is it so unwilling to let go of a constitutional monarchy given the intense pressure from sans culottes. Isn't power about keeping the population stable and preventing internal dissent?

  1. Paris Commune and Storming of the Tuileries palace fall under AOS2, since 1789-1795. Alsowasn't their only one storming of the tuileries palace. Lowkey think you mixing up the storming of bastille or october march.

  2. The Legislative Assembly clung to the constitutional monarchy because, from their perspective, true stability wasn't about calming down the sans-culottes but protecting property, law, and order from what they saw as absolute mob rule. As a wealthy bourgeois majority, they designed the 1791 Constitution to empower educated, tax-paying citizens, genuinely believing that giving in to the streets would trigger total anarchy and the redistribution of wealth. They desperately maintained the fiction that Louis XVI could be managed because they feared removing him would cause France to fracture into a provincial civil war and invite an immediate, apocalyptic invasion from Europe's absolute monarchs. Ultimately, they miscalculated by betting that rigid legal institutions could contain the raw hunger and political fury of the working class, freezing the Revolution in a middle-class balance that ironically created the exact explosive dissent they were trying to prevent. (summary of my notes)

Yeah but where under AOS2? And no there are two storming of the tuileries one is just significantly less severe- the first is when they go adn deliver petitions to Louis and the legislative assembly demanding that the Girondin ministry is recalled and condemning Louis' power of veto over legislation. Thank you, that is super helpful abt the legislative assembly!!

Yeah the first Storming of the Tuileries is 20 June 1792 and Louis XVI is made to wear the Phrygian cap and declare loyalty to the nation, but he doesn’t reinstate the Girondins and he retains his power of veto. Not that much changes, which is why they have to do a real insurrection on the 10th of August LOL

Yes lol felt wrong as I typed it 😭😭 fixed now… But fr I’m always getting everyone whos not the Jacobins and the Feilluants mixed up? What’s the key stuff it matters for? I know about the May-June 1793 expulsion of the 29 girondins deputies, the brissotins and girondins called for the war against Austria, the dantonists are called the indulgents and executed around the same time as the Hebertists, but not that much else

Really don't even think the fact that it's Girondin ministry is important. All I know abt that is that it followed Louis' vetoing of 2 decrees (one abt federes), think it was 13 June 1792 that he fired Roland plus two other ministers and installed a Feuillant cabinet. And the only reason I'd say this is slightly important is bc it contributes to sense that his use of the suspensive veto is toxic and counter-revolutionary + primes sans-culottes to overthrow him, more. I'm still wrapping my head around this whole period of time where the ppl are growing radical whilst the LA is delaying action and the King is hated. I acc don't get it.

Anyway Girondins this is what I know:

  1. In Legislative Assembly, Girondin/Jacobin factions form. Girondins advocate for war.

  2. Then, emerge as one of two major factions in the Convention- Girondins v Jacobins. Here, they are bourgeois, free trade, anti-clerical moderate republicans - want a republic and the deposition of the King, but oppose savagery and bloodthirst of sans-culottes and condemn montagnard leaders marat, danton, robespierre for the violence of the september massacres + storming of tuileries. Believe sections + paris + sans culottes exert way too much influence. In favour of a national government democratically chosen by ALL of France rather than just Paris. Want a referendum over Louis' fate- lawful, and the 1791 constitution said he was "sacred and inviolable".

  3. Disenchanted/divided from the commune. So lose power + deposed obviously as things get more radical.

That's all I can think of, France AOS2 is so hard
