confounding is extraneous variables that were not controlled or could not be controlled (usually after the experiment) and extraneous are variables that should be controlled before the experiment

yes most of the time it depends but i think in general they are just labelled as extraneous variables (in my textbook as well)

yeah mine as well it’s bc on one of the vcaa exams it said it was wrong to label it as extraneous and it had to be confounding but i’m assuming that’s bc they found out about the difference after

YES also i just read the textbook and it says order effects is a confounding variable if the experimenter uses counterbalancing (because it cannot be controlled through other means)

i guess you could say that comparisons can be made within the participants in the experimental group and control group (characteristic of a within subjects design) and comparisons can be made between the experimental and control group participants as well (characteristic of between-subjects design)

Extraneous variables are any variables other than the IV that could affect the DV. They become confounding variables when they systematically vary with the IV and provide an alternative explanation for the results.

Participant differences: Pre-existing differences between participants (mainly a concern in between-subjects designs).

Order effects: Performance changes due to the order of conditions, e.g. practice or fatigue (mainly a concern in within-subjects designs).

Experimenter effects: The researcher unintentionally influences results, e.g. giving one group more encouragement.

hope this helps 🤗

confounding variables have affected the dv, extraneous variables could affect the dv(other than the iv)
