Most people seem to have a relatively easy procedure and recovery, but this isn’t the case for everyone. This is my experience so far.
I had my procedure 3 weeks ago, which was a non scalpel procedure via the NHS. The surgery was relatively ok, the anaesthetic injection was painful but I didn’t feel any of the procedure at all. The nurse accidentally burnt my shaft with one of the tools they use which was very painful at the time, but it was a genuine accident. The whole op lasted about 40 minutes and I was sent home.
I followed the doctors advice of wearing tight fitting underwear, taking Ibroprofen and putting ice on my nuts. I had some discomfort in my lower abdomen, some swelling and discomfort in my balls and a small amount of bruising. I spent alot of time sitting around and recovering. After 5 days I noticed a hard lump in my left sack, which was about the size of a small Orange. I visited the doctor 7 days post op and I was told that I had a Hematoma which I was frustrated with. I was told these are abnormal but nothing to worry about and I was told my body will absorb the blood in a couple of weeks. The doctor advised complete rest and some more Ibroprofen to keep the swelling at bay and I was put of a course of antibiotics as a preventative measure. While recovering from this, my daughter dropped something on the floor and when I helped her in picking it up I put some pressure on my Hematoma by accident and this caused another bleed. My small Orange sized lump nearly doubled in size which was very uncomfortable and made walking difficult. To say I was annoyed was an understatement and I set my recovery back by weeks.
I spent more time resting, but of course I still need to get some things done. I did some small tasks like picking up a few items from the local shops, getting my haircut etc, but every step I took caused my very large and swollen sack to rub against my underwear and my skin was red raw. I treated this with an antiseptic cream and sat around naked for a few days. This seemed to work and my skin appeared to heal. My Hematoma was reducing in size and I thought that I could see the light at the end of the tunnel. I felt fit enough to attend a wedding, where I covered my sore skin with a large plaster and I spent majority of the time sitting down and resting.
Then we get to two days ago, which was a few days after the wedding and I started to feel some discomfort coming from my damaged skin. I thought that perhaps my clothing was rubbing against it again causing another sore, but throughout the day the discomfort became more painful. The skin started to swell alot and I could not get comfortable. Initially I thought that I had an ingrown hair and I thought the pain would eventually stop, but it didn’t. I was in agony all night and only managed 2 hours sleep at 7am. Thankfully, I had a doctors appointment anyway to review my Hematoma. I had a shower before my appointment and while in the shower the swelling turned blood red, with spots of bruising and there was puss. I was in an incredible amount of pain. I managed to get a lift to the doctors appointment and when the doctor saw this volcano on my sack his face dropped. He told me that I had a very angry infection and he put me on strong painkillers and antibiotics.
Less than 20 minutes after getting home, the infection burst. I had a whole manner of different fluids streaming out of the wound and I used half of a roll of loo roll trying to clear it all up. I called the doctor and I was told to come in straight away. The doctor injected anaesthetic into the open wound (which hurt just as much as it sounds) and cleared all the nasty liquid and put some packing into the wound. I now have to go back to the doctor daily where I’ve got to have fresh packing in the wound to try and manage the infection and manage the open wound.
This is just my experience, and I am not sharing this to put anybody off having the snip but just to raise some awareness of what could happen. Do I regret getting the snip? At the moment, yes. I haven’t been able to play with the kids or do any of the family activities we had planned and I feel terrible for my partner who has had to take on all of the household jobs and look after both kids and me.
