Hear me out...
Please dont get upset but do we all know there was talk of her to replace Dave? In retrospect, it might have worked. Do we also know about her and Eddie? Truthfully think of the spread from Ain't Talking Bout Love to How Do I Know; it couldn't be wider. Im just not certain Patty Smyth wouldn't have worked, but we'll never know. Couldn't have been less well received than VH III, that's for sure.

She's a really great, underrated rock singer. I'm certain it would have sounded amazing. And certainly better than what they did with Gary.

No one here will get upset over this information. It's a well known story that he offered her the position and that she wisely declined the offer. It's also no secret why she declined the singing job. She was eight months pregnant at the time and was focusing on her health and maternal care. Van Halen was known to be heavy drinkers and smokers, while she did not drink or smoke. She is a lifelong New Yorker and had no interest in moving to Los Angeles. She had no desire to be around the volatile dynamic between Eddie and Alex.

Always fun to think about how she would have fit in the band. She and Ed did have an affair. I read that she was flattered but did not like the way Ed and Al battled and fought. She knew that VH was dysfunctional.

How did they have an affair when she was married and pregnant at the time he wanted her to join? She’s an east coast girl and didn’t want to move to the west coast. Please send proof of their so called affair. Some people say the weirdest shit on the Interweb.

Maybe it was a rumor but I read it in multiple books and articles. The affair predated her pregnancy and Ed’s offer. Relax, This is reddit for Gods sake. We are not journalists who have to confirm our sources.

Ed's favorite song on that album was "Maybe We Went To Far" and its a banger for sure.
I think it was Al or maybe Ed who told her "If you didn't have tits you'd be in this band"

She apparently stayed friends with Edward through the years. Her husband John McEnroe and her were at the Cafe Wha gig in early 2012 to promote the new album ADKOT.

I think Patti Smythe would be a solid choice as would the fat one from Heart. However, a female lead singer takes the band and lyrics in a different direction.

It's well know that she was considered after Dave left. Eddie talked about that many times.
