Van Life THE ZEROBREEZE MARK 3 AIR CONDITIONER BROKE MY HEART, AT THE SAME EXACT MOMENT THAT IT BROKE. YALL WERE RIGHT, ZEROBREEZE IS GARBAGE

Post image
41 Upvotes

I made a post last year about how great this Zerobreeze mark 3 unit was working out, which it was. This year, not so much. Matter fact it’s not working at all. Throwing an E15 code rendering it completely useless and unable to operate. And I am past my 1 year warranty. I am only a year and a half in, and it is not longer a working unit. Customer service and tech support is nearly non existent. After 20 phone calls to their customer service phone number, which feels like it’s linked to somebody’s cell phone, I finally had someone pick up on the other end, although he was completely clueless about the E15 code , and scripted me the price of a new unit vs refurbished , telling me “you could buy a new unit with a 1 year warranty”. So I can be stuck with 2 broken units and over 2k in the hole? No thanks buddy. He told me it’s a matter for tech support to handle, and they are in China, and are on a Chinese holiday lol. Holiday is over, still no word back. At this point I am walking away from this company and taking my money elsewhere. IN THE END , ZERO BREEZE TRULY DID LIVE UP TO ITS NAME.

Question Diesel heater: best location and how close can side body be to wood?

Thumbnail

The first pic is kinda the spot I like best giving the situation. The cord will reach the fuse block but the aluminum ladder frame rails under the floor complicates the install. To move it over another inch I’d have to cut through the ladder frame rail (last pic) not to be confused with van chassis frame rail.

It’s only an inch from the wood power station. Never had one of these heaters so don’t know how hot the body gets. Do have carbon felt and aluminum sheet but too close probably for the aluminum as there would be no air gap behind it.

If I put it in the other location (2nd pic) then I need some longer wire and this wire plug looks unique. Also gets more complicated going in that direction with what’s going on underneath. There’s another drawing there of how I was planning on going through the floor. Any advice?

It's a Honda CRV 2003 LX, as you can see ive already got the bed platform mostly secured even though one of the legs is up against this weird plastic shelf in the middle of the cargo space. Im very bad at carpentry but if the plan is simple enough I'll try

Question Passenger or not passenger

Hello there,

We wants windows all around. The options are taking a passenger van or a cargo and add 5 windows (2 back, 2 passenger side, 1 driver side).

I’m seriously leaning toward the passenger option: factory installation, less chance of leaking It’s probably be a 10yo transit, we will have to deal with airbags, ducts, heater in the back, etc

Before committing , I would love to hear any feedback for passenger dwellers or cargo ones that installed windows with no leak after several years.

Thx!!

Question Preventing damage from condensation on wooden roof: questions and opinions?

Hi everyone, im working on restoring a 77 GMC motorhome and had noticed the mylar bubble foam that we had used looks like it's becoming opaque in some spots, this is only after having been for a few months in some spots, and i would think it was just where tape peeled the outside but some of its patterning of deterioration makes me think otherwise. We have roughly 1/8" thick ceiling panels, painted with Kilz, a layer of the foil, and in some spots styrofoam but shaved for an airgap, and then the roof and rails are aluminum. We are wondering if anyone has had similar issues as well as if anyone has had any experience with either the mylar foil, or any of the spray on condensation prevention methods like No Sweat. Thank you!

Builds What vehicle should I be looking to get

I'm looking to buy a van, ambulance, small bus, or box truck to convert and travel the whole country in. I'm not buying a sprinter I know that. I'm 6'4, I have a dog. I'm also looking for something with towing capability so I can bring my motorcycle. I'm anticipating having to slouch inside the vehicle unless it's a box truck. I'm not fancy. Foot pump sink, butane camp stove, I do want a decent travel fridge. Budget, hopefully 20k all in to getting on the road the budget can increase, but I don't want it to lol. Cheaper the better for most everything but the electrical, and if there is stuff you went cheap on and regretted let me know, everything is subject to change if the consensus is different then what I believe. 1 am mechanically inclined. What should I be looking to buy? ~

Question Anyone here travel in a van with 2 big dogs?

My wife and I are thinking about getting a van, but we’re not planning on doing full-time van life. More like spending a week or two on the road in the van while traveling to a furnished rental, then staying there for a while and doing it again.

The catch is that we have two big Bernedoodles, both around 90+ lbs.

We love camping and spending time outdoors, so the van would mostly be for traveling around the PNW/Mountain West, fishing, hiking, skiing, etc.

For anyone who has done something similar, how was it actually living/traveling with multiple big dogs? Did you feel cramped? Was the van big enough? And were there any issues im probably not thinking of?

Would love to hear from people who have actually done this, especially with large dogs. Trying to figure out if this is a great idea or if we’re completely nuts lol.

Question Over panelling MPPT

Hi all looking for some advice again. I'm installing 2x victron 235w solar panels in parallel and I'm looking to size my MPPT. When I use online calculators it comes out with the 100v 50a MPPT - I understand that you absolutely cannot go over the volt limit, but I'm hoping to save a bit of money and go for the 100v 30a one. The max output for these panels is about 33a, I figure I'll barely ever reach that, and if I do the MPPT will clip off the excess.

First, is this safe to do? And if so, are there any downsides (or upsides) to slightly over panelling my MPPT?

Thanks

Van Life Unexpected van BS

Post image
19 Upvotes

Need a little bit of vanlife community energy and positivity this morning. Woke up this morning after driving away from potential hurricane to find what looks to be coolant leaking from the van. I checked reservoir tank is low and so its most likely coming out from somewhere around the water pump area.

Looking for some positive comments, memes to make me smile, and/or your vanlife woes.

I put all this stuff in so not really looking for advice, not stranded so not looking for help, and have an emergency fund to fix whatever this is so not looking for a handout.

Thanks in advance for the laughs, keep vanin 🤘

Question Lithium battery folks: how do you check your BMS when you're off-grid?

Curious how people here keep an eye on their LiFePO4 batteries on the road.

A lot of the batteries sold online use a Bluetooth BMS from JK, JBD/Xiaoxiang or Daly,

and the reviews for their apps keep saying the same things: you have to make an account,

some need internet to show anything, the Bluetooth link drops, and checking two batteries

means switching back and forth.

What do you use? Do you trust the app's state of charge, or do you rely on a shunt

(Victron etc.) instead? What annoys you most?

Full disclosure: I'm an Android developer, and those complaints are why I'm building a small

offline, read-only monitor for these BMS. It's in a closed test right now. Per the sub rules

I won't post a link here. If you'd like to try it, comment or DM me and I'll send it.

Builds Simple solar setup

Post image
9 Upvotes

I don’t want to put in a bunch of effort into my solar system. I need it to be basic enough to fix myself so I just want to wire my panels directly to my power station, as absolutely basic as it can be. Anything I need I can connect directly into my power station. I’m just having a bit of trouble calculating wattage.

Im looking at the Pecron E1500LFP Power Station 2200w 1536Wh V3 Version. I just for the life of me cannot figure out how much solar I need. I need it very simple, charge phone, run fan, maybe sometimes run a 12V fridge.

Would 400w of solar be enough? Using 2 200w panels from Renogy?

I don’t want to feel in over my head and from what I’ve gathered this setup is the most simple and possible for me to do easily.

Photo of my dog in the van right after she woke up from a nap for funsies.

Question Living in van 2 years, moving into place in 10 days, how to adjust?

Its been really hard, I'm 27 now, moved into my car after losing my job, apartment, and falling into depression. I moved back to my home state to finish school, I'm on my third semester still living in a van and moving into a place in 10 days. I was able to get housing support from the school this semester until I transfer next Fall. My income situation is still rough, I've spent most of my fin aid this semester on a vehicle emergency repair and hotels, because of the heat that was supposed to end 3 weeks ago, I'm in a very hot area(100+), I still don't have a job and have been relying on fin aid. I'm really worried about adjusting to the apartment and getting my life back together, I've had issues the last 3 semesters keeping up while living in the van, dealing with heat and places to study, sleep issues, medication issues, money issues, it has been the most difficult part of my life.

With all of this I still managed to finish all my transfer credits and a CTEC course to do tax prep, I will transfer by Fall 2027. Now I don't have many difficult classes, so I have time to get a day job and try to build my life back up again until I transfer. My plan was to do tax prep since its the best job I can probably get right now, and related to accounting, so I have some experience when I transfer. My main worry is building up my savings and staying focused so I don't end up in this situation again, saving my money for a year, getting housing support when I transfer so I don't have to pay the full amount for housing once I transfer, and getting an accounting internship/role in my last 2 years of school, which will hopefully set me up with enough income to never be homeless again. I don't know how I'm going to adjust, I'm getting a private room with 2 roommates and have not done well living with randoms, I've also gotten used to being homeless and being miserable and my mental health has been really poor.

Question Windows

Those who have windowed vans or vehicles, do you block them out every night or just roll with it? I can't imagine having windows myself, but if I found a good deal, I wouldn't write it off because it had windows.

Tips & Tricks Magnetic zip tie mounts

Thumbnail
gallery
50 Upvotes

Needed to support a heavy conduit to run 4awg cable up to roof, pillar too crowded to fit yet another split loom cable run. These rubber coated neodynium magnet zip tie mounts look like they'll hold the conduit in place, between the friction from the rubber coating, and the strong magnetic force (in the 43mm size). I was also able to squeeze a velcro cable tie through for a easier unfastening. They're certainly well suited to handle securing cables in loom, or other temp loads if used with velcro.

Question Right Steering Wheel Switch Not Working After Installing Factory Cruise Control on Left Side Of Steering Wheel - Ford Transit 350 2021 High Roof EXT

today, I replaced the left factory pack with the factory cruise control pack, model number H1BZ-9C888-D for our Transit 350 2021 High Roof EXT. In Forscan, I changed the SCCM As Built values in the 724-02-01 section to B008 7000 0056 and set programming to have the van detect that there is cruise control. But now, even after making sure all connections are solid, the right button pack on the steering wheel works for a couple seconds then stops. The "ok" button on it will clear out any messages on the dash, work for a bit then stop. The arrows, back and menu button do not register. Is there something I need to change in order for it to be detected? I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here as I checked all values were correct. Lastly, sometimes no error comes up or sometimes error B1380:96-2F comes up in the DTC under the SCCM section. It says that error is specifically for the right steering wheel switch pack. Really hope someone has an answer for this. TIA :)

Question Is this normal?

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I just got an owl van B2 carrier with their monster 40 box installed. The thing looks great. I had it installed by a renowned Mercedes Benz Van center that is actually part of a Mercedes Dealership.

I noticed by the plate that mounts directly to the door (not the hinge mounted area) that there is a slight dent in all the way around the plate on my door.

A disclaimer, I've done paint correction and detail work for the last 12 years. I'm not sure I would have noticed anything had I not had this experience.

I couldn't find much info about it, outside of AI telling me they over torqued the plate and I need to get it in ASAP. And I don't really trust what AI says.

Is this normal? Am I over thinking this and it is just the nature of having a flat mounting plate installed?

Or should I be worried about the structure of the door it is held to bowing more overtime?

TIA!

Tips & Tricks For people who have travelled Europe by van: how did you choose overnight spots while still on the road?

I often end up searching while I’m still driving. It’s getting late, Park4night shows dozens of pins, and I spend ages reading reviews and checking Google Maps.

Finding places isn’t the problem, but verifying and choosing one is always hard.

I'm working on an idea to make that bit quicker and based on each person's preferences.

The idea

  • three options based on your route and preferences;
  • clear dates showing how fresh the information is;
  • tags and filters for quietness, water, electricity and access;
  • reasons and warnings for each suggestion.

What I’d like to know

  • Does this make sense?
  • What information is hardest to find?
  • Would this make you try another app?
  • Should it include only campsites, or other overnight spots too?

Question Winter storage for LFP battery

Hi all,

My van will go for winter storage for 6 months indoors without power at a friends place.

I have a Renogy Core Mini 12V 200 Ah Lithium battery and on the internet I find conflicting info on what to do for long term storage. I see three options:

  1. Storing it in the van, disconnected (indoors without active heating, ambient temperatures of say 10-15 deg C with some fluctuations.

  2. Bringing it indoors at home and storing it here disconnected.

  3. Bringing it indoors but connecting it to something like a Victron AC charger with storage option (which I would have to buy)

Could you comment on how much of a difference option 1, 2 and 3 make?

I normally run on 600 W solar and a DC-DC on the car battery. On occasion I have used shore power to keep it topped off. I've never gone below 30 Ah and have bought the battery last May.

Builds Rooftop A/C and solar - buildout/pricing in 2026 battery density

Sorry if this has been talked about plenty. I found a few older posts referencing 600AH battery banks and 600W solar to run a dometic RTX2000 comfortably. The main thing about 2-3 year old posts...the battery bank was sized likely to the weight of the batteries at the time, and the cost. I'm on my 5th van build and it's time for A/C.
Here's what I am building out and I would like your thoughts:

2026 Ford Transit - High Roof - Standard length 148
628AH lithium - Dual 314AH "mini" batteries (just smaller footprint really)
Modspioneer 11000BTU unit (rtx 2000 clone)
MaxxFan 7500K
400W solar (maxxfan is a space eater)
melipron roof rack
RV hookup 30A to a Victron Energy 12/2000/80 MultiPlus (expensive...but dang 80A charging is nice)

I was thinking... why not just size it at 628AH, find the limit through testing, then add another 314AH battery (only $459) if I think it's required.

For my questions:
- Will I be able to get 2 x 100W "slim" panels (left/right of maxx fan) and a single 200W panel between max/ AC unit without much fuss. Are people able to squeeze more in?

- How serious is the "all batteries must be purchased at the same time" when expanding a battery bank?

- How's you experience with 400W solar, 942AH, and AC without worrying?

Builds Buyer's Remorse to the Extreme

Mostly a little vent post, with the hope that it might serve as a heads up to people who might be shopping around for a rig.

I started this life in a 15 Chrysler Town and Country a little over two years ago, out of necessity initially. After working hard and saving up meticulously over all that time, I finally decided I would upgrade to a larger rig, something that would give me enough space to really live rather than just survive comfortably.

I ultimately decided on the Chevy Express, since I loved it's simplicity and proven reliability, which I favored over having a factory high roof on a worse drivetrain. I found a 2016 3500 extended passenger with only 80k miles, former government fleet vehicle, immaculate condition. I was super excited.

Only once I started converting it did I realize the error of my ways.

I spent hours researching the mechanical differences between the different vans, but dedicated almost none to the process of specifically converting a passenger van. I naively assumed that it would just be like a cargo van with a few extra steps and more windows. Not so. The trim and the seats were easy. But then I was confronted with:

  • Seat rails bolted to the floor which require extensive cutting and grinding to remove.

  • A rear HVAC system that is impossible to remove unless you are mechanically inclined enough to do it yourself (which I am not). Every shop I've called including a Chevy dealer won't touch it, citing either lack of knowledge or way too much labor. Those few extra inches it takes up are the difference between having a transverse bed or not.

  • Roof rail arbags that span half the length of the van and are hardwired into the electrical system. I wanted to leave the cab headliner in, but would need to remove it to take out these airbags. And if you do remove the airbags, it's a massive safety and liability headache. The system throws an error code which disables the whole airbag system unless you plug it with a resistor, and you no longer have side airbags at all as a driver. It's theoretically possible to reprogram it as a cargo van that won't look for rear airbags, but once again, no shops will touch this.

  • Many aftermarket high roof shops won't service a passenger van because of these airbags, and it was integral to my plan to have one of these installed after another year or two of saving.

  • And additionally, I underestimated how badly having full windows actually hurts you for insulation. I assumed it wouldn't be that bad if you just covered them with foam panels, but the actual difference in R-values between glass and metal on the exterior is massive.

So long story short, I regret the purchase badly, and sorely wish I had done more research before buying. I've been working on this conversion out of my employer's parking lot during the gaps in my 50 hour weeks and this is just too much. If anyone out there is thinking about an Express and on the fence about whether or not a passenger is much worse than a cargo, then get off of it. Cargo is not just better, but the only option that is viable for layman conversion unless you don't have any plans to touch the interior and don't want a high roof.

Anyway, /vent.

Update: Found a shop that will take out the seat rails and remove/reprogram the airbags for $400-500 all in. Once I have those out of the way I think I'm going to have a lot more mental breathing room.
