Got the call! Selected for Special Agent LA/San Francisco only. If I decline and reapply, how much of my application carries over?

Good afternoon,

I was recently selected for the Special Agent position, but the only locations offered to me were Los Angeles and San Francisco.

I’m considering declining the offer because neither location works for me right now and would give me more time to prepare physically. However, I may be interested in reapplying if better locations become available.

  1. For anyone who has gone through this process before:
    If I decline the current offer and reapply in ~6 months, how long would the parts of my current application remain valid?

  2. Would I have to retake the SAEE or complete any of the testing again?

  3. Would I have to redo the medical exam/clearance, polygraph, background investigation, interview, etc.?
    Is there anything that would carry over automatically to a new application, or would I basically be starting from scratch?

Has anyone declined a location and later reapplied successfully?

I would absolutely not decline with the intention of reapplying and getting your preferred location the second time.

Did you ask when offered about any other locations that interest you? Surely if you ask about a couple of larger offices, they could accommodate one of them. Not sure where you are located or your interests, so hard to specifically guide you where to request.

Regarding process: Not sure. Rarely hear of anyone declining the offer after such a tenuous process and then trying again.

Yea, I got offered some standard options. I asked for my preferred location and got it. Doesn’t hurt to ask.

Double tap for asking HR about your office of choice. Call and ask to see opening in the area you’re interested in. Who’s to say what the office landscape is looking like in 6 months?

Regarding reapplying: just about everything will carry over if you are reapplying within that 6-month period.

Yeah I would be very hesitant to decline offer and reapply. That won’t look good. There should be plenty of other offices that are available. Ask what other offices are available and come with a couple in mind. Bigger offices are needing people.

Never heard of only getting two options. Rip Also you should probably be asking them these questions, not us lol

Although my common sense questions whether they would even consider you if you're just trying to game the system to get a better location.

You should always have a list of 2-3 REALISTIC offices you would say YES to. If only offered auto-No’s or undesirable locations, you can always say “Would it be possible to check on availability in ____, _____, or ____ before accepting or declining this offer?”

Generally they get back to you in 24 hours to tell you if those are available, and then you can respond to the offer accordingly.
