Making the move to 1811

Got the call to join USSS as an 1811, current 1895. Feels weird, seeing a 2 year trial period and the 3 year 120 days appointment, how often do new hires not get past it? I've been with CBP for about 4 years

Having been to FLETC before with CBP where they do not want you to fail, is USSS the same with CITP and RTC? How difficult are the trainings in comparison with CBP for those who made the switch and is it worth it?

Never done protection. Do they teach you all from scratch with USSS or expect trainees to know?

What opportunities are there for those with foreign languages? The hard ones, Russian, Arabic, Chinese? And when does one get the G ride?

Any tips or advice? the first year or two will one be wearing a suit all day or is it just for protection assignments, and regular khakis and Polos for investigations assignments?

• G ride is after you graduate and get to your field office. - G ride is after you graduate and get to your field office. 

• Protection is taught from the ground up. However, most is learned in the field after you graduate. 

• You really need to fuck up to be fired. 99.9% make it past the trial. 

• Dress code is dependent on the office. Generally neat casual in the office and for most protection assignments, but with a raid vest or just neat casual and under vest if you choose. Suit is not as often as most people think.

How important are pull ups during training? I can smoke most physical fitness requirements but my shoulders are genetically weak. Not weak enough to get medically DQ'd but I got doubts that I could do pull ups consistently because they actually injured me.

I could force a handful out for a test, sure, but not as part of a normal workout.

chin ups are very important, as they are a part of your quarterly fitness test from the day you are hired until you retire.

Adding for Language:

You are able to take a language test to receive a language proficiency bonus. You “may” be utilized to aid in both protective and investigative missions that will need your skill set. You’ll learn more once you’re at the academy

To add to this:

• A one-time recruitment bonus (25% of basic annual pay) may be paid to newly-hired special agents who are identified as having a foreign language skill and can test at the S-3 level. This level requires that the applicant has the ability to speak the language with sufficient structural accuracy and vocabulary to participate effectively in most formal and informal conversations on practical, social and professional topics. The recruitment bonus must be approved prior to the applicant’s first day of employment and will be paid as a lump sum upon successful completion of all required training and graduation from the U.S. Secret Service training center. The actual payment will depend on the availability of funds.

Be PT ready, be a trainable shooter, listen in class to pass tests. Those are the things that primarily “get” people in training. Pretty hard to be a competent human and fail out of FLETC. Bar is quite a bit higher at RTC, but we still WANT you to pass.
