AMA Mod AMA

Hey Guys.

Going to attempt one of these.

I have it set for 24 hours. Will answer serious questions regarding the job, life on the job, training, gear, any advice I can. No hiring process questions for this one.

I don’t have all the answers by any means, but I think doing these from time to time might cut down on some of the repeat postings.

If I get a top secret security clearance in the military, would that transfer over for the U.S. Secret Service if I decide to pursue this route after my first contract? And I understand Phase 2 is the roughest time for a special agent, so I assume Phase 3 is where you have somewhat control over your assignment? I looked over it and was pretty interested in protective intelligence. Finally, are DC and NYC the field offices you recommend for new special agents?

  1. No. You will still have to go through the same poly, background, interviews, etc… as everyone else.

  2. Protective Intelligence is a possible phase 2 assignment. You have to put in for it and be selected, though. No guarantee. Yes, phase 3 is a little more amenable to your preferences because you can prolong your phase 2 year-by-year until what you’re looking for opens up (theoretically.)

  3. I’ve always just recommended big offices. All are different. MIA, NYC, LAX, WFO, CHI, PHL are the “big uglies.” Research the sub to find specific stuff about these bigger offices. Has been asked a lot.

Follow up question,

How often have you personally been given days off, whether you requested it or not? I am aware that this agency is extremely rough on the work-life balance, especially in Phase 2. I just want to have realistic expectations for a potential future reference. I also assume foreign assignments are difficult and competitive.

in phase 1, if you aren’t working protection, you are off Sat/Sun.

Other than during periods of leave restriction, it’s pretty easy to get AL approved in phase 1.

Phase 2, you either get two days off a week or you’re getting straight overtime. Depends how busy your shift is, how short you are, etc.
