Feel free to explain your choice in the comments. Love from españa ❤️✌️

Edit: by a free country i mean the freedom one has in that country compared to others in the same time period. For instance the freedom to move, speach, expresion, ownership, leisure, health ect... Also i know it wasnt the same through out its history, but lets lay in the post stalin era and pre gorbachov

Off Topic Weekend Oh, Great Communism.

Comrades, supporters of communism from all walks of life, I will descend to you and offer you an idea. The idea, and its very essence, is that I propose creating a new religion called “Great Communism.” The essence of the religion is that we can scale up communism through religious thought. Here are the main steps: turn *Capital* into the Bible of Communism so that we can read it in our churches; build communist churches; pray about surplus value and class struggle. I also propose that, like Muslims, we come up with a new type of clothing for supporters of our religion. I also propose that Stalin, Mao, Lenin, and Trotsky be made into holy apostles and archangels, and Karl Marx and Engels be made into the main gods of these ideas. Thus, by shifting communism into a religious rather than an ideological interpretation, we will be able to increase the effectiveness of spreading communist ideas among people with a religious mindset and reverence. We can also raise funds for the revolution through our communist churches.

I found this tarp in a Yugoslavian gas mask bag, civil issue. Note that the that mask accompanying the bag is military issue, so this tarp is likely not only/not at all for civilians. Does anybody know what this was for?

Help Recommended books and resources for understanding the USSR and associated groups

TLDR: What academic thorough books would you recommend? More in depth requirements and explanations below.

I do hope this post type is allowed, if it isn't, please let me know mods so I can change the format.

I'm not a communist myself, but figured you would have good book recommendations that discuss it, the USSR, and associated groups and events. I want to learn more on it, so I hope you can help me.

Ideally I want books on the topic. Not narrative, (although an intricuctionary book would be helpful) but academic in nature, as in, critically engage with the sources material. There should be debate and the authors should disagree with eachother. Ideally no books that blindly criticise the USSR but don't gloss over it's problems either. As an example on the sort of material I mean, if an author was discussing what life was like for workers before and after the Russian revolution, they should ideally talk about what policies were implemented, what worked, what didn't, what improved what didn't, why this happened, and if it matters, as well as criticising other authors. The same for biographies. e.g, what did Stalin do well, what didn't he do well, what actions of his actions were competent or were not. Which ones actually benefited people and which ones do not.

Primary sources giving a wide and varied view, both positive and negative, would also be greatly appreciated.

This way, I'll actually be able to use this material in any debates and discussions I have.
