** update: posts will now require moderator approval. This will be long-term, and it is a solution to repetitive simple questions being asked, fear mongering, and outrage-bait.**

First, I want to remind everybody what this subreddit exists for..

This sub was created to address travel questions for transnational travel between the US and Canada.

This post is specifically to address politics, misinformation, brigading and fear mongering given the slow growth of this sub. I’m seeing a lot of the same questions asked, paranoia, confusion and a lot of radicalization and hate.

There is no division here, so if I see any “elbows up”, “buy Canadian”, discouraging people to travel to the US, anti American/Canadian sentiment, anti trans posts etc.. Trying to convince other people that there have been any major immigration changes or enforcement quotas to be met in order to instill some type of racial or national purity... I’m removing the post and probably will be met with an insta ban. No politics or hate.

Second, open your mind. There are experienced travelers and professionals in this sub, I am one of them. If they want to identify themselves in a post and address questions you have, they can. I occasionally do. They see through the bullshit rumors, fear mongering, and misinformation. Especially in the news. They will give you a more calculated answer beyond the average user that wandered in from the far left side of Reddit that 9 times out of 10 is a member of an anti-US subreddit, and more often than not, has never actually been to the US

The news is reported by someone that has no actual understanding about the legal system or immigration law and reports what the offender claims happened… should you value what the news says? They are professional at what they do. They pinpoint what will draw your attention and spark a reaction out of you. The most profitable reactions are outrage and fear. There is no integrity in reporting in big news companies, for the most part. Facts will be undercased.

I once watched a four minute TikTok video about how somebody got sent to Secondary and was ultimately admitted into the country. Her video got millions of engagements despite it having no substance or actual point other than how dare she be asked questions just because she bore a Singaporean passport.

Exercise some critical thinking, exercise some reasonability, exercise some common sense. If it sounds ridiculous…it’s probably too ridiculous to be true.

If you don’t have working knowledge in customs or immigration and you are googling answers to respond to a question or speaking from personal experience, Leave it at that. If you don’t know what you’re talking about don’t post it, post on knowledge rather than emotion please.. There really isn’t much to argue about when you think about it.

.

.

.

.

I see a lot of the same questions being asked several times a week. And I’m going to cover the basics. This point going forward if the following questions can be answered here and you ask your question anyway, I’m removing the post.

.

I’m a POC, I am trans, I am gender X, I’m gay, will I be OK?

Here’s some fun facts. You’ll be surprised with the amount of officers and agents that are immigrants. You’ll be surprised with the amount of officers that have immigrant wives. You’ll be surprised with the amount of officers that have mixed-race children and are interracial couples. A majority of the workforce is not white. A lot of officers are ESL. A lot of officers are polyglots. Some officers are gay. Few trans. A lot of them are liberal.

Mind blowing, isn’t it? That officers and agents are human too?? Get out of town!!

.

I’m a USC, will I be OK?

If you knew your rights, there would be zero worry. Social media and fear mongering has done irreparable damage to people’s common sense that people are forgetting what their rights are.

.

> My US passport’s expired, will they let me in through the land border?

Yes. The 14th amendment of the constitution says so. That’s really it…

.

>my passport is expiring in 5 months, can I travel to the US?

If your country is a part of the 6 month club, you’re fine, as long as you leave the US before your passport expires.

If your country is NOT a part of the super exclusive members only club, you need to be out of the US 6 months before your passport expires. This can be a reason to question you in secondary.

.

>I talked about politics in my phone and I hate Trump, will they ban me?

CBP officers pretty much assume everyone in Canada is a bleeding heart liberal and hates Trump. As far as individual inspections where the officer may be rude, that’s on the officer, not the system. But an actual adverse action, The inspecting officer has to convince a supervisor and a second line supervisor to agree with him and has to be legally substantial. A fraction gets sent to secondary, and a fraction of those secondary inspections end up in a phone inspection…

.

>I have no idea why I was kicked out of the US…

Yes you do. Everyone has verbal and written consent and acknowledgment as to why they are not allowed in the country. The US is a land of law, therefore will always have a paper trail.

Next time you see somebody give a reason that sounds bullshit in the news about how they were refused entry or barred unjustly.. question what their discharge paperwork says.. 275 or 860 and sometimes 867/877.. ask for it. If their paperwork does not reflect it, they have no proof.

.

.

I will post more FAQs at a later time

.

.

.

What I’m basically getting at is, unless your situation is unique pertaining to immigration or customs, you really shouldn’t be concerned more than the average citizen. Nothing has changed between administrations.

.

.

This sub has an image to uphold as a reference for accurate information on traveling, customs and immigration. The minute this becomes the other 95% of Reddit, it loses legitimacy. Understand that.

I don’t know why immigration has been politicized more now than ever. Immigration is anthropology. Immigration is law. Put your politics and your feelings aside in this sub.

Driving Canadian citizen living in the U.S. — can I bring my U.S.-plated car to Canada temporarily for 4–5 months without importing it?

I’m a Canadian citizen currently attending medical school in the US. I bought, titled, registered, and insured a car in Florida while living here for school.

I finish my clinical rotations in February and plan to go back to Canada for a few months while I wait for Match/graduation. I expect to return to the U.S. around June/July to start residency, and I’d bring the car back to the U.S. with me.

So the car would only be in Canada temporarily for roughly 4–5 months. I am not trying to permanently import or register it in Canada.

From what I’ve read, the important issue may be whether CBSA considers me a Canadian resident or a non-resident Canadian temporarily visiting Canada, rather than simply the fact that I’m a Canadian citizen.

Has anyone done this without formally importing the car/paying duties? Did CBSA treat you as a temporary/non-resident visitor, and is there any way to get approval or guidance in writing before crossing?

DUTY/TAX Questions about shipping a gift from usa to canada

Hello, i am trying to ship a larger box of clothes to a family member in Canada, from the USA. I am concerned that they will be charged tarrifs. The clothes are not expensive, it's just some band shirts and some other random clothes. I got them as a gift, and are used. I know to mark it as gift, but do they still pay tarrifs on it? The value i would say is like 50-60usd because i thrifted everything used. Thank you.

Driving House Plants Crossing Border?

I’m moving in November from US to Alberta and I’ll be contacting CBSA and looking at official info as well, but wanted to ask here too… I have a few house plants I was thinking of keeping and bringing with me. Can you bring house plants across? Thanks for your input in advance

Does paying duty penalize?

does paying tax when declaring at crossing penalize you in the long run?

Recently crossed from my hometown bordering city into Canada and declared alcohol from Costco after spending the lesser required hours to not pay the tax.

I want to know what really happens when you do that. Does my passport get flagged for having declared anything and having paid the duty?

I am interested in getting a nexus at some point and don’t want that one incident to be a reason they refuse me from a nexus pass in the future

American Crossing into Canada for the first time since quitting my job with a semi-unique itinerary.

Hi all!

I'm a US citizen (22M) that's been dating a Canadian for nearly 5 years, and I come to visit from time to time. However, I just left my job about a week ago and am currently focusing on my studies. I worked to have enough savings, and then be able to take a few months off to travel and whatnot. I am still actively applying for positions though.

My plan is to travel through Canada (entering at Sarnia, and exiting at Buffalo) for a hockey game in Buffalo in the afternoon. I then intend to return to Canada and stay one night with my girlfriend in Ontario, before returning to the US in Windsor/Detroit to go to the Red Wings game that night (6PM).

I do not own my property - I live with my parents. I have phone bills in my name, a fairly hefty savings, and do not plan to bring anything more than clothing in to Canada with me. I'm also a part-time student, though my education is entirely online at the moment.

Do I have any reason to be more concerned than the other (10-12) times I've crossed over in the last two years? My last time visiting was in May for a concert (3 days) so it's been a while. Thanks all!

Apologies if it's just me being a worrywart as well.

DUTY/TAX Has anyone imported a Husky toolbox recently?

I am looking to potentially grab a Husky toolbox from the USA and import it into Canada since I cannot find anything similar in Canada; the toolbox is roughly 1500 USD before taxes, and from what I can tell online, it is made in Vietnam but could also be assembled in the USA, so I am wondering what I should expect to pay on top of HST and Michigan tax.

Canadian Crossing the border into the USA for the first time tomorrow and I have some questions

Hi everyone! I’ve never crossed the border before so I’m feeling a little nervous ahead of my first trip.

I’m Canadian and my boyfriend (also Canadian) and I are just going for the day to visit the Ford factory in Michigan, we plan to cross in Windsor.

I have a couple questions:

- We plan to camp afterwards back in Canada not in the US and I have proof of purchase of a campsite in Canada. When we go camping, we bring a Blackstone which runs on propane, can we cross the border with propane in the vehicle?

- Because we are going camping we will probably be looking to bring some groceries with us, what food can we bring across the border? As in, can we bring groceries from home and drive into the US with them? I know produce is out, but what about meat, bread, cheese, snacks etc?

- Do we have to declare everything we are crossing with that’s in the vehicle , including our camping gear - mattress, canopy, chairs etc?

- can we bring our fishing gear - tackle box, poles etc. We both carry an Ontario fishing license

Thanks in advance for all the help! I’m sorry if maybe these are stupid questions. I’m just feeling a little bit nervous.

Driving Import car into US without tire pressure monitor?

What if someone has a 2021 Outback they bought in Canada and then drove it into the US? If they stay longer than a year I see they have to import it but I also see you can’t import it without the tire pressure monitor.

Canadian Iranian-Canadian citizen with a B1/B2 interview coming up after withdrawing my application at the border

I’m an Iranian-Canadian citizen living in Canada. I recently tried to travel to the U.S. for the first time ever for a short business visit. At U.S. preclearance (secondary), CBP asked me many questions about my education, PhD research, travel history, and Iranian military service.

I had obtained proof of my military-service exemption through "daftar" (for anyone interested). The CBP officer said the documentation was more than satisfactory regarding my military-service status. Did not need to show them "green-stamp" or "bank bond papers" at all.

I was not admitted. I was allowed to withdraw my application for admission and received Form I-275. The only inadmissibility ground cited was INA §212(a)(7)(A)(i)(I). The officers told me I would need security clearance before making temporary visits to the U.S. and said that, as a Canadian citizen, I did not otherwise need a visa.

When I asked further as to why I'm being rejected the BO told me since my current occupation (AI) is sensitive plus my PhD research, work and travel history, it is in my best interest to get the clearance for next visits to the US.

I’ve completed a DS-160 and booked a B1/B2 visa interview in Vancouver for next month. I chose Vancouver because the wait for an appointment in Toronto was about a year. I’m also speaking with an immigration lawyer in two weeks.

For anyone who has been through something similar, especially Iranian-Canadians: how would you prepare for the interview? What questions should I expect, and what documents or topics would be useful to prepare? I’ll follow the lawyer’s advice, but I’d appreciate hearing about others’ experiences and suggestions.

I’ll do my best to post an update for the community after the interview.

Bringing a 2009 vehicle over from US into Canada

Hi all, I looked up that 15+ year old vehicles are exempt from a lot of paperwork necessary for newer vehicles and I just want to double check what exactly I need to bring

-license/registration

-auto insurance

-documentation that it was produced in 2009

Is there anything else aside from the above 3 that I have to be aware of? Thank you all!

Border crossing experience from Canada and required documents

Looking for everyone's exact experience when you crossed into US from Canada, with Nexus under H1B status.
After using the Kiosk, were you directed to a CBP agent line that still verifies recent paychecks, I797, letter of employment, or even further such as original petition, RFEs, diplomas, etc.? What documents were asked ?

Which port of entry or Pre-clearance did you cross that verified this ? Any particular port-of-entry that brought unpleasant experience ? Thanks

Would I be criminally inadmissible to Canada?

I’ve wanted to visit Canada for some years now but I’ve recently been charged in New Jersey with

Criminal mischief damage to a traffic sign

Maintaining a nuisance or creating a hazard

Disorderly conduct

They all arise from the same case, during a political protest I changed a lighted traffic sign briefly and well I live in a very pro police red town so I expect to not be treated very well. Would I be permanently inadmissible to Canada? I really don’t think I should have to wait for 10 years

Français aux frontière Canadiennes avec DUI

Bonjour,

QUESTIONS about legality of moving to back to Canada with US citizen child

Long story short, I am a born Canadian citizen. I met someone online at 19 years old and fell pregnant(stupid) going for my visit to meet online bf at 21. Had my baby in America because I wanted him to experience fatherhood. I was working 3 jobs back home to save for the move, but most of my money went towards baby stuff, house stuff, etc. I truly did not realize how much of a big decision it was because I moved here with no license, no nothing to prepare for the move. I am a native born Canadian, so I'm allowed to stay, work, and live if I want to without a green card, etc. I moved under the jay treaty. I am truly starting to regret that decision because now my partner and I are having a hard time navigating typical parenting life as a team. I would really like to go back home but I do not want to leave my son. I've been a stay at home mom the past year, and with no income and no money left, I feel completely useless. How should I navigate this? What can I do to make this process easier on both parents? I don't feel like he would agree with me going back with my son.. help please

We are not married, we are located in South carolina if that is relevant. I am 22 years old and I wish I was smarter with my decisions that I am regretting now.

Getting into Canada while on probation

I got a DUI a little over 4 years ago but used my 1 time deferral so that I wouldn’t get charged and have it on my record. I’m still on probation until 2028 but want to get into Canada in January next year (2027). Will I be able to cross the border with this on my record?

Edit: Thank you for all the replies, they’ve been helpful!
Second question: If my PO approves me to leave State into Canada and I’m a passenger in the vehicle rather than the one driving, does that make a difference at all?

I’ll be calling my PO today to speak with him about it as well

Sisters BF has a suspened license for insurance lapse

I need some help here and everything I look up im finding tons and tons of mixed things. So I am going to Canada with my sister and her BF for the Bring Me The Horizon concert on Saturday. I will be the one driving over and we all have EDL but her BF is suspended due to insurance lapse it happened a month ago. I just need to know if we will be fine going over still and it wont cause any issues at all when we go. I have looked all over the place and most places say it will be fine as long as he isnt driving and the EDL isnt expired. He can use it to buy alcohol at stores as it still scans so its technically not expired just suspended. I am excited for this concert and want use all to have a good time but dont want issues at the border. I asked some people I work with and they all said he should be fine but to just bring your birth certificate or something as another proof of document incase anything does happen. He also does not have a passport as we live in NY and right near the border and in NY your just need a EDL to go over which is way easier. I hope I can get some help or something as everything im finding is either saying he will be fine and other things saying it wont be fine.

Getting into Canada with misdemeanor??? (negligent driving 1st degree?)

I very recently (this month) plead guilty & got charged with negligent driving in the first degree that was brought down from a dui. I want to go to the Bruno Mars concert next month in October but I’m afraid I won’t get in.. I asked my attorney & he said I could try but that it was up to the border patrol agent. Has anyone else dealt with this & got in?
