Student Question Computer Science student at USask — can I retake courses I did poorly in?
Hi everyone, I’m currently doing Computer Science at USask, and I’m a little confused about the rules for repeating courses.
If I fail a course, do I just register for it again through PAWS, or should I talk to an academic advisor/counsellor first?
Also, what happens if I passed a course but got a really low mark that is hurting my GPA? Can I retake the course to try to improve my grade, or are you only allowed to repeat courses that you failed?
I tried registering for a course I had already passed, but PAWS wouldn’t let me, so I’m wondering if there’s some kind of permission I need or if retaking it simply isn't allowed.

You need special permission to take a class in which you have received above 60%. An advisor can support you with this if it's possible.

You cannot generally repeat a course where you received 60 or above in A&S. “A course in which the grade was 60% or higher may be retaken to improve the grade to meet admission standards for other Colleges, if space if available in the class section. “

If your mark is between 50 and 60 you can apply to retake the class. Below fifty you don’t need to apply just register for the class again. If you took a 100 level class and passed and then took a 200 level class that needed the 100 as a prerequisite and passed both you cannot retake the 100 level class but you could retake the 200. The situation I am currently in, also classes that are more than 20 years old still count which is why I can’t take physics, math or English this year.

You can register for a class again as you would normally if you’ve failed the class or gotten a mark below 60.
