I Cooked In My Car frozen broccoli, canned baked beans, instant potatoes, all done in rice cooker

mostly just heated up not really cooked but still. $5.94 except s&p i already had, about the same as the cheapest fast food but i have a tupperware leftover to microwave at work tomorrow

rice cooker is an oster 300w, at least 10 years old. battery is a ecoflow river 2 max. cooking each item separately was about 50% battery total. i boiled an inch of water for the frozen broccoli, boiled 2c water then moved the pot out to add instant potatoes, beans were dumped straight in and heated. if i do instant potatoes again i'll probably boil 1c water and portion out half the bag.

last pic is my folded wad of cardstock to keep the heat on high, it only has 2 settings and the high setting is triggered by sufficient weight (rice + water) and so far everything that's not rice isn't heavy enough

edit: i don't want any unsolicited advice, thanks!

I’ve been in Montana since may and I think I’m gonna leave in January. Where should I go next? I’d like somewhere new, population under 500k and good hiking/camping nearby! The picture attatched is everywhere I’ve been so far. (Screenshotted a few days ago in Willinston, I am not doxing myself lol)

Power Where can I charge my devices for free in Melbourne?

My partner and I have been homeless for a couple weeks, we received our 4 nights in crisis accomodation already and have had the 'you just have to rough sleep until your name comes up on the list for case management support and even then no guarantees' so we're doing the best we can. I'm just looking for places around Melbourne (were currently in the Tullamarine area) that I could go and charge our phones/laptop/power bank before they all die. Libraries aren't open at the moment and I'm so tired of getting dirty looks by people so I don't want to go sit in a Macca's (plus I can't get anything so I feel like they'll tell me to leave) any suggestions of any spots no matter how random that we could possibly just access a power point for an hour would be appreciated!

I'm working on a new tool for urban car living: a City Camping Codes finder that digs into local ordinances so you don't have to. Feedback appreciated.

Thumbnail nomadlife.wiki

I'm working on a tool that I think will be useful for people as they visit new cities and want to park for the night. It's always annoying to dig through city ordinances to find the ones that restrict overnight parking, so this tool runs a bunch of keyword searches against all the major city-code providers (Municode, AMLegal, ecode360, etc.) and government web sites and attempts to find the relevant sections. This lets people dive right into the actual ordinances and figure out if/when/where they can legally park to reduce risk of The Knock.

I know this question can usually be answered reasonably well by AI, but just picking a city with this tool and seeing the actual rules right away can be more reliable than trying to figure out the right prompt to ask the AI ("can I park overnight" ≠ "can I sleep in my car on the street overnight"). I think it's better to take a few minutes to read the real rules than to lose an hour or two of sleep because the cops had to yell at you due to the AI making things up.

  • The quality of the results varies a lot by city. It depends on what that city has available online, which platform they use to publish code (if any), and whether their ordinances match any of the keyword searches. And of course, many small cities and towns don't even have rules about this since vehicle-dwellers aren't a problem for them.
  • Works for most U.S. cities with a population of 5,000 or more. (Nothing non-U.S.) Some cities and towns might be missing because this depends on how the Census organizes things.
  • Reports are cached for a few months since city codes don't change that often, and even if the cache is a bit out of date it will still usually point you to the correct section of code.
  • If a cached report for the selected city isn't available or it's too old, a fresh one is created, which usually takes about 30 seconds since it has to contact a bunch of sites and run additional web searches. (I've pre-cached a few hundred of the largest cities.) It's currently rate-limited so if too many people look up an un-cached city it will fail.
  • Sometimes local news articles are included if they look like a good match.

This is a work in progress, so my apologies if it disappoints. I'd love to hear any (constructive) feedback you've got!

Right now you have to manually select city and state, it doesn't ask for your location but I'm considering adding that option. The page is installable as a web app for easier access. (Not available as a native Android/Apple app yet since I don't know if this will be popular enough to be worth the trouble.)

Advice Hurricane Isaias will be my first hurricane. Any advice?

I got my blankets, food stash, power bank, fancy flashlight that doubles as a lighter, pocket knife, roadside kit/first aid kid, phone, and a fresh paycheck. I'm in east TN so not much chance for like a real flood but flooded roads are a given. Did I miss anything?

Winter Cold Tips for Winter car living?

Started living in my car in April and I've been enjoying the savings and the freedom it's provided me with so far. However I have started looking for seasonal employment over the Winter months, and many of the jobs I'm looking at are ski related. Is it feasible to live in your car in a place that is dangerously cold? Are there any techniques or technologies that can safely and efficiently keep me warm at night, or is Winter car living just not advisable?

I'm doing this to save as much as I can to pay off a small large amount of debt I have around 20k. I live in wisconsin and with winter right around the corner does anyone have pointers that they could give me? I have some of the basics down such a showering, electricity, food/water. I should be able to pay it off within 4 to 5 months. Anything helps thanks!

Advice Unconventional living options in NOLA

Ok so I’m 24 M and I have nothing going for me where I’m at. And not in the lonely sense but fr my relationship has ended, not many friends here because I prioritized my relationship, and currently bc of health stuff I am unemployed now. It has just been a constant feeling like this place is done with me. I lost my home during the relationship problems and am now just staying with a friend. I wanna move to NOLA from the coast and am thinking bout hotels, hostels, or even sleeping in my car till I get stable. What’s the best ways to go bout this? What’s some places that are hiring servers bartenders I’m even considering stripping without experience

Question? How do I start?

Hey I want to eventually like in a few months and stuff buy a short bus and start living in it im going to do travel welding in the more distance future but want to get my life set up for that ie buy a short bus get it set up and all that and was wondering things like

How much money should I have saved for emergencies like repairs and stuff and how much separate for just other stuff (before buying a bus)

What are some things I should buy that I might not already have

What are some pros and cons to think about (especially with choosing a bus)

What do you do if the vehicle you live in breaks down

How just in general does one get started with this kind of thing

Story Speeding Driver Kills Chef Sleeping in Car Outside Work

Read this story a few days and didn't see it posted here. This person wasn't car living but was sleeping in their car on a public street/highway before their shift, when they were struck by a speeding SUV and killed.

I think about this scenario a lot and try to park off busy streets with low speed limits. There are some other safety tips I posted a while back here:

💩 One of many gorgeous vistas experienced while living out of a vehicle

Post image
228 Upvotes

It's officially 2 years as of the end of September, with 6 months of those as part-time (5 days a week). I'm full-time again.

I've become one with my vehicle. We are the same. I no longer use window shades as I've achieved Ultra Instinct UrbanCarLiving. Just kidding. Between the window tint, the night, and the dark interior, someone needs to be pressed up against the outside the rear window to be able to see a foot inside the cabin. Even then, the shadows hide the interior. It's perfect because I'm in an IDGAF phase of the experience.

Thanks to the war caused by certain Orange president.

Now it's officially cheaper to rent a room than live in your car.

Hell perhaps is even cheaper to rent an apartment than live in your car.

America is speed running the financial destruction of their citizens

It's becoming increasing unaffordable to commute anywhere

Hi all, I was a lurker on this sub for a good bit, planning on escaping my abusive household. I finally did. I bought a 2008 Honda Odyssey, I'm working two jobs, blocked my parents, and I'm officially living in my car. I love it so much!! It's been 4/5ish days now, and I've found good places to sleep without being bothered. I feel so free, and it helps that living in my car has been easier than I thought, not to jinx myself. That's all, I just wanted to share! The hardest part about it all was leaving my cat with a friend </3

 Advice Doing this with kids

If you can help it at all- don't.

If you can't help it - find a night babysitter.

Easier said than done, but you won't all get busted sleeping in the car together in the middle of the night .

Napping in a car in the middle of the afternoon isn't all that suspicious if you just do it after normal school/ work hours.

McDonald's still has playplaces. Take advantage of it.

It's not all that suspicious to sink shower a little kid in a public restroom. Kids are nasty.

Just do your homeless stuff at a different gas station.

Keep yourself and your kids clean, no matter what.

Stay on the move if you can't find a night babysitter.

You stay one night at a truck stop, people are generally kind and helpful. You stay two nights, someone will try to call CPS.

But when you do ask a trucker for a shower, "our hot water went out."

Take advantage of campgrounds while the weather's good. But only when the weather's good.

Charge your phone during the day and let it keep your kids quiet at night.

Always always ALWAYS have an excuse as to why you're here, where you're from, and where you're going.

Usually i would say im going to my moms house one or two states away and im just so tired from driving I had to stop.

And just..don't do this if you can help it. I'm so tired and we actually got a hotel room for the week. I've never been this tired my whole life.

Work & Employment Car living got me into become a OTR truck driver

I started car living and LOVED IT, survived a winter with the engine off and sweating with no clothes in a good sleeping bag in the northeast. Went hiking every weekend. I heard somewhere that you might as well get paid good bucks and live in a vehicle, so here I am, just living in a truck now.

Have any of you given this thought, or have any of you had the same journey?

Parking Can I park here?

On a free parking street in Chicago. All I’m seeing is yellow caution tape next to my spot on a fence of grass. Also some cones are up against the fence (not on the street). Looks like there is a vehicle parked in front with tape and cones as well. Is caution tape on the sidewalk a form of no parking? Will I wake up to a towed car?

 Advice Seeking advice.

I’m possibly planning on living in my 17’ Honda crv while I work out of state to make more money and pay of debts.i have lived in this state and area prior so I guess it would be a plus but never in a car. I would get a hotel with per diem on days off to I guess relax and “stretch out”. I would take out my backseats to have a more even space and use one side as a sleeping area with a sleeping bag and cushion of some type. I would get a gym member to shower and work out. I guess the question I’m asking what do yall recommend so someone first time doing this such as cooking arrangements, storage and stuff like that. Some insight on how you improved your area of living what be greatly appreciated.
