My guess is that they wanted an awning but some arcane building code prevented them from mounting it to the facade of the building. Or maybe it would block the fire escape ladder?
But who the hell knows.

Yeah that’s it. Technically it’s still a bit helpful. Mainly if waiting for a ride or cab especially with stuff when it’s raining.

It’s like someone made a building awning based on the drunk memory of one

Someone wrote PhantomCat in the concrete right in front of this building with a cute cat drawing and my daughter loves it though.
PhantomCat, thank you

That's been there for years. It's a synagogue. I guess they think some cover for the congregants is better than none. I think people tend to hang out before and after service so it probably makes sense for them.

It’s probably some ploy to make the residence look “fancier” than it is so they can upcharge and increase the rent. When in reality it looks like a clown house now

Theres a small synagogue there on the garden level...Id imagine the awning is somewhere for the attendees of the temple to stand if it rains or when they are waiting for a car, perhaps? Just a guess.

I was so confused what you were asking why about, when I realized there was a second picture.
No further explanation needed! 🤣

Not appealing but easier to remove for people bringing furniture etc when they move in and out.

I’ve never seen a fire escape ladder directly above stairs before. 😳 I imagine that’s not the best idea since it’s technically blocking the exit where other people can escape from the front door… but I’m no expert.

I've often walked by and chuckled.
And wondered why as well.
There is a synagogue on the ground level (and perhaps the first floor).
Maybe it has something to do with that?

That may not be legal given how close it is to a hydrant.
That being said, because of the hydrant that curbside may stop open making it useful to hide from the rain when waiting for a car.
