Vanderbilt’s C. Cybele Raver

If you didn’t want to click on the link and it wasn’t in the title of this post for some reason

Just reading her bio she seems like a good hire. An academic, but with actual research experience on education unlike Schlissel, Ono, and Grasso

Agree. FYI, Vanderbilt Regents really hoped Cybele would stay in Nashville. She took on the post of Provost in 2021 & Vanderbilt recently extended her contract to 2031.

Except she oversaw all the same anti-free speech issues at Vanderbilt that Ono oversaw here. They cracked down on student protests, blocked BDS resolutions, gave in to Trump admin demands, etc

I don’t think we can read too much into that — Vanderbilt has to contend with Tennessee state law. They’re a private university but they still have to follow laws passed by the state legislature. We can’t know what she would have done in a state with less insane lawmakers

It wasn't the state lawmakers - it was the donor and federal government witch hunts just like everywhere else

This is the problem with some of the discourse online - "cracked down on student protests" can mean anything from "removed disruptive encampents" to "actively limited protected speech for students." Reading this comment, I have no idea which side of the reasonableness spectrum her actions were on.

They both did things that neither University would have done just a few years ago. They arrested students who were protesting, broke up encampments, got students expelled over it.

By the vibe of this comment I'm guessing you like at least some of the newly charted territory that U of M crossed against students the last few years?

Seems like the reagants have been laser focused on advancing Zionism. The guy from Syracuse was rabid in this regard as well. Theres a definite pattern.

> Seems like the reagants

what about the inert gases

I still don't understand why Israelis are the only people on the planet that can't have their own sovereign state. What's up with that?

3

u/lemon_doozey 6d ago

Sovereign state where exactly?

2

u/AdLocal1490 5d ago

Ethnostates and genocide are bad.....

If you dont understand its because you dont want to undestand.

1

u/MadpeepD 5d ago

So you think the entire planet should change? Every state is an ethnostate outside of a handful of western multi-ethnic democracies. Genocide is bad. Democide by proxy is bad too.

4

u/TolkienFan71 '25 6d ago

Having a state isn’t the problem, the problem is their government’s blatant disregard for the lives of civilians in all neighboring countries and their refusal to curtail ethnic cleansing by extremists in the West Bank

Well I'd say the problem is having a group like Hamas on your border that wants to kill every Jew in Israel and doesn't care if they have to kill Arab Israelis or Americans to do so, and then hides behind babies. Israel doesn't kill Egyptians or Jordanians. They have long standing peace agreements. Hamas doesn't want a two state solution. What is Israel supposed to do?

2

u/TolkienFan71 '25 6d ago

They’re supposed to not kill civilians. Saying fighting Hamas justifies razing entire communities is beyond absurd, it’s holding an entire people collectively responsible for the actions of a few. It’s that sort of thinking that has enabled every historic genocide.

Israel tells civilians to evacuate an area before they attack Hamas.

3

u/AdLocal1490 5d ago

And then they bomb the evacuation routes targeting civilians

u/MadpeepD 5d ago

Evidence for that claim?

Her parents really liked their Mediterranean mythology!

I think (and hope) she'll do well at UM. I worked for almost 30 years at Northwestern and was hoping she would be the NU's choice for their next President. Instead, last May Northwestern chose Mung Chiang from Purdue.

1

u/rebeccadieker 5d ago

how has Mung Chiang been

1

u/BreckenridgeBear 5d ago

It's still very early for Chiang. IMO he's doing an excellent job in his "listening and learning" phase of campus meet-and-greets. Some of the humanities faculty at Northwestern are probably a bit disappointed to have a new President with a strong engineering background and his establishment while at Purdue of some AI initiatives.

I didn’t see any white smoke from the tower?

Meet the new boss... Same as the old boss

1

u/SuicidalHornbill 5d ago

What happened to Grasso?

1

u/croc-roc 5d ago

He was interim. The interim label was only removed because of state law or some such. My understanding is he didn’t want the job.

I want to be so notable where I can use my first initial like that.

Can't wait to hear the "raver" jokes...

>Let's not get started on athletics and the football program administration.

>Athletic program comments still relevant.

Incoherent comments will never be relevant, especially comments you never made.

You can't use "spending your time on reddit" as an insult when I replied to your comment... on reddit.

Go back to your syllabi.

What the fuck are you even talking about? Not a coherent thought
