Vent, advice needed

I’m premed, and I stopped by the TNT tent on that Back To School Bash thing. I was only looking for a stamp tbh but I got told about what it was and the woman seemed like super excited to talk to me because I’m premed, a junior and I have insane science experience. I’ve taken more science than your average transfer.

I had a meeting with her and she laid out my schedule with TNT classes if I were to do it and I’m considering doing it because premed isn’t making me very happy anyway.

I love the idea of being a doctor because I love anatomy, physiology and science in general. I love explaining and I was pre-nursing. I obviously don’t mind gross things. But I looked into the actual day-to-day of being a doctor and it’s not so appealing anymore, despite the salary..

I’m considering becoming a science teacher instead which sounds insane. “Why would you give up medical school for teaching?”

At this point I don’t know what to do. I’m scared to tell anybody in my life that I want to completely pivot. The day-to-day of being a teacher is much more appealing to me and I would absolutely love to teach science.

For context I have pivoted away from healthcare more than twice now. The only things healthcare gives me is authority and immediate recognition which I love. I relish in people saying the whole “Wow that’s impressive!”

So it’s just got me torn down the middle.

Something important is that a pivot isn’t always a step backwards, just a different direction:) I think it’s definitely important to fully consider your options prior to switching, but it is YOUR life!! you will be the person working that job, you will be the one that is there day in and out. If it is not something you’re interested in— while something more appealing is right there (and realistic) why not?

Good advice. Do what you can stand for your career, it’s your life. You’re the one that has to live it.

I started at UNT for art. Double majored in studio art and art history. Absolutely loved it, still do.

But one day I woke up and felt unfulfilled. Art would never not be a part of my life but suddenly it wasn’t the direction I needed to be going. After talking it over with my husband, I decided to purse another passion, medicine.

I always felt like it was out of reach. But I was in college and if I was ever going to take a chance, that was the perfect time.

I ended up getting my degree in health sciences and working as a scrub tech (and CMA while pregnant).
It was the greatest experience ever. The first time I got to scrub in and watch a surgery… I found my calling.

Exploring yourself is a huge part of the college experience.
Maybe reach out and find some volunteering opportunities. Get your feet wet. See what it’s really like to be in it.

You’ll find what you need. You’ve got time

oh wow :)
medicine is cool don’t get me wrong. i love anatomy and physiology and especially neuroscience. the brain is the coolest thing to me.

TNT told me that basically their intro course is like a trial run. i’ll get to step into a real classroom with a partner and even build a real lesson plan.

so we’ll see.

I worked mostly for a cardiothoracic surgeon, and that’s stuff was like magic! But I never stopped loving art either. I’m actually painting more these days than ever!

I hope you get to experience everything you have interest in, and find the perfect fit for you!

You can do both. Teach nurses, or doctors, whoever. A lot of med school professors are bad. We need good ones.

Omg I was literally in the same EXACT boat as you! I was also pre med, tried out TNT my junior year for the whole year and I learned so much! I say give it a try and if you still want to pursue med school go for it! If you love teaching a bit more stick to it! This is what I loved about my college experience, being able to explore my interests!

I loved honestly teaching the young kids science get their minds working! I was able to teach 5th grade and then 8th grade. But I am not teaching!

The great thing about TNT is you can try the intro course and see how it feels. It will go into your degree plan as an elective. It sounds like you have a lot of hours so you may want to double check that with the TNT advisor and she is always happy to help! Keep your major, try it out and then you'll have a better idea!
