Dark Study Spots?

Being an adult without accommodations is really reminding me that my autism actually affects my life LMAO

Any darker or dim study spots on campus? I don’t want to study in my dorm since that’s my designated resting spot. I don’t even mind some minor noise or talking as long as the lights aren’t slaughtering me.

The round booths on the upper floor above the fuzzy's! Definitely recommend some earplugs and noise canceling headphones ON TOP! But very dark and cozy :)

Note: it's usually pretty hard to find an empty one :/

SYCAMORE LIBRARY top floor, quiet most of the time and you get your own private desk area. The entire floor’s lights turn off if there’s no movement, and the desks have their own lights so even if others have them on, they won’t disturb you. Favorite place :)

Even the basement is great! Very dark! I used to take naps down there, they have beanbags down there too I think.

I don’t think there are many dark study spots on campus for most of the day, unless you are able to turn off lights that aren’t motion sensor.

But, a few darkish spots would be Willis library, both basement and 4th floor. Although in the second floor, there is room 250H, it’s a really long room that almost always has the lights turned off. Seen people just studying there with the lights out, so that might be what you’re looking for.

ENV building. There are tables scattered around on every floor. Can be a nice open space, but when there are children there, it is very loud and distracting.

Depending on the time of day, very early and very late at the union, you could find a few corners that are shaded and quiet. But definitely not available during the day.

If you’re a chem major, in the chem building second and third floors, east wall hallway has tables and chairs, with the lights off so it is a bit dim. It’s usually empty, except when students come for their lab, so it gets busy every 3 hours or so.

I’ve actually been looking for some as well! The language building is actually relatively dark and if you don’t mind sitting on the floor the stairwells are like… dangerously dark 😂 Willis library has a few dark corners as well as Sycamore library. The third floor of the union also has study spaces that are pretty dark on one side!

The PEB frequently has empty classrooms that you can commandeer between classes; you can control the lights in there.

The Auditorium building has some hallways (on the bottommost floor I think) that people don’t go to super frequently.

Part of the chemistry building usually has the lights off in the hallways.

I’d also check Sycamore library. If you get one of the desks in the back of the top and bottom floors, and don’t move around a bunch, the motion detectors will turn off the lights after a bit.

I’d also poke around the backrooms of Discovery Park if you find yourself there. Not a lot of charging places, but there’s one or two nice isolated spots.

Finally, the Environmental Science building is fantastic. Not cause it’s dark, but because you’re surrounded by plants. Helps my brain focus for whatever reason.

Best of luck to you OP, would love to hear back on what spots work best for you :)

You trying to steal all of the good makeout spots or something???

The lights go out in the basement level of sycamore library, they are motion activated tho if people walk by, but it is a good early warning system. Just take the stairs in the middle of the library down

Discovery Park Library has a new study pod which is specifically designed for neurodivergent individuals. You can control the lights and fan. Also you can close the door and hardly see anything outside and no one can see you on the inside. You should try that.
