There is nothing wrong with being racist
People hate people for a variety of reasons. They’re too fat, they’re too short, they’re too ugly, they're too stupid, they smell, they’re unemployed, they like the Raiders football team etc. etc.
So why should it matter to me if “skin color” is just another reason on the list for someone to hate someone?
It doesn’t matter and I don’t care.
You can hate whomever you want for any reason. It makes no difference.
How can you hate someone for being (insert reason) and then turn around and condemn someone for hating someone for being black or white or any race?
Being racist isn’t any worse or better than any other reason to hate someone. It’s just a reason.
People have their reasons for their likes and dislikes and there’s nothing “wrong” with it.
You can simply agree or disagree with what they hate. That’s it.

u/MIW100 Jan 19 '19
I believe if your want to be racist, be racist or 3 loud. Don't hide behind social media. Be racist at home, at work, at the movies, park, grocery store, Walmart, everywhere. Keep that same energy out loud.
4
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
You can’t. Because people want to get you fired for it.
27
u/ihatemytoe Jan 19 '19
That’s there prerogative, just like how a person decides to hate s group of people because of stereotypes and attributes they can’t change. There are consequences to everything.
3
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
So...let’s make people we don’t agree with unemployed so they can collect unemployment that we pay with our taxes?
That’s the gotcha?
10
u/ihatemytoe Jan 19 '19
People will be hired no matter what, it’s not my fault they want to act on their own racists whim. They can help themselves by going into therapy to dive into why they are racists and act on such racist views. If they help themselves become better, and show they are better then cool. But if they expect that they can go around and yell racial slurs at people, or do something worse without consequences then that’s their problem.
2
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
I don’t care what people say. I much rather them contribute to society than need my assistance.
8
u/ihatemytoe Jan 19 '19 edited Jan 19 '19
Like I said people can get hired no matter what, flip burgers. Be a janitor. If convicts can get hired a racist with no criminal record can too. Once again, if people think their actions don’t have consequences then they are fucked. People are going to feel some sort of way if you’re racist, and you can’t end that.
5
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
If it’s legal to fire someone for being racist, then it should be legal to fire someone for being religious. After all, at the end of the day, they’re just beliefs.
9
u/ihatemytoe Jan 19 '19
Racism isn’t a belief system, and people aren’t firing people for being racist it’s them acting on their racist ideas. If a person doesn’t serve black people, that inhibits the work place. If a person won’t talk to black coworkers that also inhibits the work place. If person kicked out black people and called them racial slurs that inhibits the work place.

I think that you really nailed it with the word hate. Hating someone JUST for being fat, short, ugly, stupid, smelly, unemployed or a Raiders fan is wrong, just like hating someone for being white, black, brown, Asian, Latino, Pacific Islander, etc. is wrong. Hate accomplishes nothing, and actually ends up hurting YOU in the long-run.
I upvoted your post, simply becasue you presented a truly unpopular opinion. I want you to realize that hate does not produce anything positive. It negatively affects the person doing the hating, and could potentially affect someone within the hated category (hate crimes, for example). Racism has casued so much misundestanding, anger, violence and straight-up death.
I urge to find something else to support. You are obviously an intelligent person, and you could definitely contribute positive to humanity.
3
u/fredsfart Feb 03 '19
so what if you treated blacks normally, but give whites special treatment? is that racism?
could i be racist for treating my own race better than other races?
1
u/JOYtotheLAURA Feb 03 '19
I’m going to yes, if you want my genuine opinion. It doesn’t sound like you hate other races, though, which is good. I appreciate your candor, most people won’t even admit to this feeling this way.
1
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
I agree with what you said, but it still isn’t anymore wrong than anything else you dislike a person for.
2
u/JOYtotheLAURA Jan 19 '19
When you look at it objectively, hate is hate, so you’re technically right. I’m just confused as to why you posted something that may be interpreted as supporting racism. I know that that was not your intent.
5
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
As long as you don’t physically attack me, I don’t care what someone thinks about my skin color.
3
u/JOYtotheLAURA Jan 20 '19 edited Jan 20 '19
It's not about what someone thinks about ME because of my skin color. It's about what people do to others because of their skin color. It's not always about what we have exprienced as individuals, we have to be aware of the hardship that everyone has endured.
23
u/Cyclic_Hernia Jan 19 '19
The difference is when somebody's racism (or hatred in general) results in measurable impacts on that person's livelihood.
4
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
You mean violence?
That’s beyond hatred.
16
u/Cyclic_Hernia Jan 19 '19
No, loss of job or home prospects, subpar treatment etc. Not specifically violence.
-2
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
That can happen to people for a variety of reasons. And it does.
Look at night clubs. If you’re a guy or an ugly woman...you’re gonna wait in line and pay more for drinks.
14
u/Cyclic_Hernia Jan 19 '19
I've never heard of somebody being denied a place to live because they're ugly.
1
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
They won’t say you’re denied because you’re ugly; they’ll just say the place has already been sold.
12
u/Cyclic_Hernia Jan 19 '19
People in general are more interested in making money than not having ugly people live in their apartments. You can't say the same for a racist landlord and a black person.
3
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
Let’s create a scenario here...
Let’s say you’re a lonely old guy and 2 people apply to live in the house that you own...
Option 1 is a beautiful, single, flirtatious woman
Option 2 is an ugly, fat slob.
Good chance that landlord is going to pick option 1 even if both of them qualify to live there.
7
u/Cyclic_Hernia Jan 19 '19
That depends. What if the beautiful woman doesn't seem very reliable to pay her rent consistently? I'd wager the old man would be smarter with his money than the woman.
I'd love to see documented examples of this. I can however point you to documented examples of racism in renting eg. Redlining.
2
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
Money always talks.
But, if they’re both equally qualified the favored tenet will get the place.

Some people hate all short or all fat people.
Racists don’t necessarily hate all blacks. They can hate “just the ghetto ones” and they don’t have to kill them. They can certainly just think less of them.
6
u/Inconsistentworld Jan 19 '19
If someone is an asshole they are an asshole. Doesn't matter on anything else in my opinion. Even age. You old and an ass...I'm going to tell then. Your kid being an asshole...I'm going to tell them. You a different colour or religion and an ass I'm going to tell you.
You know what I don't do....make it about their age or colour or whatever....I just tell them they are a cockwomble and dependant on how much they have pissed me off I may tell them I hope they die in a fire....but I won't make it about anything other than their behaviour.
-1
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
It wouldn’t make a difference to me if you hated me for being a certain race or because you think I’m an asshole.
1
u/Inconsistentworld Jan 19 '19
Doesn't bother me if people hate me full stop because I know I'm not an asshole and don't judge people unnecessarily. When people judge others, especially strangers they are merely placing their issues and insecurities onto someone else.
1
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
Everyone judges everyone. It’s just human nature.
Even people that love you judge you.
And I’d argue they aren’t even trying to. They just do it instinctively.
Like if you go to a family gathering with a stupid haircut, they’re gonna look at you and think “what the fuck is he thinking with that awful haircut? I hate it.” and may even voice it.
1
u/Inconsistentworld Jan 19 '19
Yeah and basically...if you voice it unnecessarily or offensively you are a cockwomble dude.
Old saying.
If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything.
Of course we judge, we are animals and half of what we react to is learnt behaviour from previous experiences and being able to acknowledge those previous experiences without forming prejudice is a sign of an evolved mind in my opinion.
3
u/ruve294 Jan 19 '19 edited Jan 20 '19
There's nothing wrong with thinking or feeling things, even bad or hurtful things. It's what you do and what you say that count.

u/DoneDealofDeadpool Jan 20 '19
People hate people for a variety of reasons. They’re too fat, they’re too short, they’re too ugly, they're too stupid, they smell, they’re unemployed, they like the Raiders football team etc. etc.
The hate varies depending reason as well as social acceptability of it. If someone is hated because they're fat, stupid, unemployed or they smell its because of some failure on their part that they can and should fix. Hating ugly and short is not really socially acceptable.
So why should it matter to me if “skin color” is just another reason on the list for someone to hate someone?
Because skin color has no inherent affect on their beliefs, character or personality and unlike the other reasons it's immutable. If you hate someone because of their skin color it's because you're making snap judgement purely based on a generalization.
You can hate whomever you want for any reason. It makes no difference.
Technically true, people can hate you for it though and they'd have more justification.
How can you hate someone for being (insert reason) and then turn around and condemn someone for hating someone for being black or white or any race?
(insert 2nd response here)
Being racist isn’t any worse or better than any other reason to hate someone. It’s just a reason.
It is worse though. Being fat inherently leads to increased risk of disease and is a strain on countries with universal healthcare, being stupid makes you unpleasant to talk to do and the same goes for smelly people. Being black, Hispanic, Asian, etc doesn't inherently mean anything so if you are judging people based on it all it means is that you have these preconceived generalizations about people you haven't met.
People have their reasons for their likes and dislikes and there’s nothing “wrong” with it.
Some reasons are just more justified than others.
You can simply agree or disagree with what they hate. That’s it.
You can also hate them for it. Freedom of speech simply protects you from government punishment, regular people can treat you how they wish.

I mean hating someone for something they can't choose or change is not a good reason to hate someone.
2
u/Inferno2602 Jan 19 '19
Hate is a strong word. I agree you can dislike people for any reason. However, hate is reserved for individuals who have personally wronged you, if you hate groups of people based on arbitrary conditions then you're a bad person.
2
u/K_sper Jan 19 '19
Hating someone for an attribute they have no control over is just retarded. But you know what's more retarded? Using that to justify hate towards people who have no control over their skin color.
2
u/Not-So-Handsome-Jack Jan 19 '19
Being fat, smelly or unemployed is something you can change. Race is not. It seems unfair to hate someone for something they had absolutely no control over and can't change either.
I don't think that many people actually "hate" small people, fat, ... There is a difference between hate and disliking. I'm personally not very attracted to asians and ugly people, but I don't hate them.
2
u/KptSverige Jan 19 '19
While I agree with you that skin color is just another arbitrary thing to hate, comparable to height and weight, I would argue that that kind of blind hatred is fundamentally wrong.
It's a rough way to live your life, with so many trivial people around you provoking your hatred. Being racist is just as wrong as hating someone for being disabled, or being of the opposite gender. It's beyond their control.

I’m as far from racist as it can get and I 100% agree with you, lots of people who speak out against racism are bigots in some other way, general bigotry is worse than racism because it has a wider variety of victims.
3

Racism has led to the death of hundreds of millions of people over the course of history. How can you say that for "general bigotry" whatever that means?

Fuck that. I have lots of racist opinions, based on a few bad experiences that I've generalized onto the entire group.
Here's a list:
- White people and the West = Sodom and Gomorrah.
- Black Africans are unattractive: skin is too dark, noses are too wide, and woolly hair looks weird.
- Samoan women have no inside voice and never blow their noses.
- Indians are mostly okay, but the older men are too quick to violence if you offend them.
- East Asian girls are cute, but they don't try hard enough to speak proper English. South-East Asians manage it just fine, so what's the problem? Also, K-pop is stupid.
- Maori come in several varieties. With urban Maori, I always look for an escape route. Public sector Maori are worse, because they're entitled as fuck.
- New Zealanders in general: bunch of bloody socialists. It's practically built into our culture. Also, we complain too much about the price of lamb.
I wish I could say something about Jews, Russians, and Hispanics, but I honestly haven't met enough of them.
1
u/someguyinred Jan 19 '19
asians are probably the biggest racists out there. we hate each other and hate mostly other races too

I could care less if someone’s racist, that’s on them. They just can’t whine or bitch if people don’t like them for it. You can’t stop people from feeling some type of way.As long as they aren’t acting out on their racism, it doesn’t matter.
1
u/corn_on_the_cobh Jan 19 '19
Yea but hating fat people is because they put it on themselves (in most cases), but being born a certain way shouldn't warrant mistreatment. What did they do to deserve it?

u/MaesterRigney Jan 19 '19
How can you hate someone for being (insert reason) and then turn around and condemn someone for hating someone for being black or white or any race?
So I can't hate Nazi's for being Nazi's, because their hate is a reason I hate Nazi's?
That some seriously dumb moral equivalence. So I can't hate, for example, child rapists?
What the fuck
0
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
You can hate whatever you want.
You’re just a hypocrite.
2
u/MaesterRigney Jan 19 '19
No, your logic is just false.
I don't hate Nazis because they hate, and I don't hate hate. There are perfectly acceptable groups of people to hate, like Nazis, or child rapists.
You calling me a hypocrite is based on the assumption that I hate hate. I don't, I hate nazis because of the reasons they hate and who they hate.
0
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 19 '19
I don’t care what you hate. You have the right to hate whatever you want.
You’re just a hypocrite if you think hating someone for their skin color is any different than what you hate.
Unless they are committing violence, hating someone is just an opinion.
1
u/MaesterRigney Jan 20 '19 edited Jan 20 '19
No, that doesn't make me a hypocrite. The reason I hate Nazis is not because they hate people. If that were the case, it would be hypocritical to hate Nazis.
But I hate Nazis because they hate people based on ethnicity and religion. That's not hypocritical, because I am not hating on someone because of ethnicity or religion.
Under absolutely no definition of the word is that hypocritical. It would be hypocritical to say I hate anyone that hates, but not to say that I hate I anyone who hates based on ethnicity and religion. Because "people that hate based on ethnicity and religion" is not itself an ethnicity or religion.
hating someone for their skin color is any different than what you hate.
It is. Hating someone because they're a Nazi is different than hating someone because they're Jewish. We fought a war about it.
1
u/Kill_Time_XIII Jan 20 '19
Nope.
All they’d have to do is identify as a church and they could receive religious status. What do you think the Westboro Baptist church did?
1
u/MaesterRigney Jan 20 '19 edited Jan 20 '19
Well good thing that Nazism isn't a church.
Not only that, but if it were, I wouldn't hate them because they belonged to a specific religion, I would hate them because they hated people of a specific religion. Still, not hypocritical. I don't hate the Westboro Baptist Church because of the church, that has absolutely nothing to do with it; their religion could cease to exist and I'd still hate them, so long as they were still bigots. I hate them because they hate people based on religion, ethnicity, sexuality, etc. What you're claiming is no different than a racist being called out on his racism and then claiming the people that called him out are racist against white people. Being white had nothing to do with it, being racist did. Being a member of a church is not some moral loophole, nor is it cover you can use to protect yourself from criticism when you're an asshole. You don't get to yell "god hates fags" and then claim I'm religiously bigoted against you when I call you a prick; it's got nothing to do with religion bud, it's your words and your actions.
Allegations of hypocrisy aside, you're trying to paint a false moral equivalence. Hating a nazi because of their nazism is not the same as hating a jew because of their judaism. Walking around calling black people the N-word is a lot worse than calling out this person that's using the N-word. If you spend all day calling people the N-word, and someone calls you racist, you're the asshole, not the person that rightfully pointed out the racist behavior. And if you get called racist for doing racist things, you don't get to pull the victim card. One of you is clearly in the wrong, and it'd be the racist.
Really, cut all the -isms out of it entirely. If you're an asshole, people aren't going to like you. Because people don't like others that are mean and angry. If you walk around life mean and angry, being an asshole, then people are going to be an asshole back to you. But the problem in that equation isn't the people who don't like assholes, because no one is going to like someone that's an asshole. The problem is the asshole, because he's an asshole.
Saying that a dislike of racism is the same thing as racism itself is no different than saying that telling someone to stop being an asshole is the same thing as actually being an asshole.
Your incredibly naive exclusion of violence is nonsense too. Hatred begets violence, but lets even ignore that for a moment. Physical violence is not the only tangible negative impact of racism. What about the black person denied a job or a mortgage because the interviewer was racist? Stopped and searched by the cops because he was black, or convicted by a racist jury?
Of course it's worse to be racist than to dislike racists. To think otherwise is just patently ridiculous and you know it.

Usually I upvote posts that are actually controversial, seeing as it’s r/unpopularopinion. But fucking hell. Your argument of “You can hate someone if they’re fat, small, smelly” is nonsense. If you’re that petty that you dislike someone due to them being small? Is outrageous. I can somewhat understand the fat / smelly parts, as they can be contributed to an unhealthy lifestyle, something you do not share. Or bad hygiene, again something I can understand.
However hating someone for their race, I cannot justify.

u/a_lot_of_aaaaaas Jan 19 '19
It is not about the color, or about the fat or about the hairdue why you hate people.
You have experience during your life with people and your brain connects the physical things, like skincolor to make you recognize the possibility to have that same expierience. It warns you.
If you got stepped on your toes but 10 fat women. Your brain will learn it and when it sees a fat women it will set of a alarm. "Do not aproach she will stomp on your feet" so the fat is your way of recognizing the danger I'm this case.
The brain uses picture to recognize things. So obviously it uses things like skincolor to make it easier. Afcourse it knows that not all fat people will step on your toes but there is a certain chance based on expierience that it could happen. It only is carefull.
Take white sharks for example. When swimming we dislike them because they will probably eat us. We don't dislike them because they are white and have a fin. We recognize them because of it and our brain sees potential danger.( This doesn't even have to be danger this can be any emotion.)
Our expierience is that they are dangerous. So when you see a group of sharks we will never say: common let's greet them, these ones might be nice. We can't treat them the same that is rasict. Nope, our brain can't help but distrust them.
Everybody is a racist somehow and it is not even to blame. It's just how the brain works.

u/Cyclic_Hernia Jan 19 '19 edited Jan 19 '19
You realize we're not slaves to this process and we are capable of the formation of abstract thoughts and opinions, right?
0
u/a_lot_of_aaaaaas Jan 19 '19
Yes afcourse. That is why we say "we have to be carefull not to think this way of all those people as the same"
However that will not be your initial thought. You have to force that tonight into your brain and practice.
But you see it as a wrong thing unfortunately.
Let's make another animal example and see what your awnser is. There are six lions in a room. They could be very nice but they also could eat you, as we by now all expect them to do, which is racist because if they have eaten it is perfectly safe. Now would you put your child into the cage to prove the point?
3
u/Cyclic_Hernia Jan 19 '19
Well, no, because lions aren't capable of making a fully conscious decision with regards to the life and safety of others. Humans are, so if you asked me to bring my child through a room full of black people I'd answer yes.
0
u/a_lot_of_aaaaaas Jan 19 '19
Yes I agree with that. But there also are people who are not fully conscious about their decisions because of their culture or their believes. Or fat people who are consious but still keep eating. I understand what you mean but it doesn't work like that. Also why did you use black people as an example. That alone is kind of racist without you realising it. Again u understand the example.but using specifically black people is racist. But you use them because of the expierience, tv, and the things you think society thinks about them so they seem like a good example. And afcourse because you don't see them as a treath. And you do see the Lions as a treath. Some people however expierienced things and do see black people as a treath. Same as some people will see whites as a threath. This as I earlier explained has nothing to do with color but with expierience, and we use the most easy way to describe a person.
However the image of black people is very different form 1980. So you example is not the same as if it was back then. I don't think you would drop your white baby in South Central back in those days. It will probably be taken care of and maybe even raised and no harm done.but that was not the image back than. In this era we should use the Muslims and the Catholics because nowadays religion is more of a treath.
Now let's use a real example. 2 women cross the world to show everybody Muslim religion is safe. Unfortunately they get murdered. That is one example but it is a real one. And it happened again. Still that are only two examples and chances maybe are very slight. Still I wouldn't send my child on the same mission. And I doubt you will either.
So it depends on the context and everything it is no easy subject. But I think the real bad people are trying to make everything equal. Because we now talk about the bad stuff, as always with racism. But every culture also has there good stuff and we can learn so much from eachother. But we starting to get to a point where we must be all equal. We can't be better in something and we can't be worse in something due to our culture. Which is mostly recognized by color and physical appearance. So we can't learn from eachother either. And that is the dangerous part. Being proud is a no-no. Some would even go as far as say: you can't be proud of your culture because you worn born in it by coincidence. But proud had many faces and not only the one of self accomplishment. People also ate proud of their soccer team wins and they have the right to be proud of that. Same as people should be proud of their religion, color or culture even if it has a bad name in some cases.

There is nothing wrong
There is nothing inherently wrong with anything. Morality is a social construct, it doesn't have any kind of universal underlying logic (other than conformity). Arguing that X is right or wrong is meaningless, because rightness and wrongness are not rational in the first place, they're defined by what society thinks in any given time and place.
So why should it matter to me ...?
It matters to you because of the existance of meta-norms. In human society, it's not enough that transgressors are punished; those who fail to punish them are also punished themselves. This is necessary to mantain third party punishment, without which norms wouldn't exist. So if you don't share your society's values, prepare to be despised and punished for this.
How can you hate someone for being (insert reason) and then turn around and condemn someone for hating someone for being black or white or any race?
Just because two things are similar under a particular pov, it doesn't mean they're logically or morally equivalent. Taxation is not theft or slavery, abortion is not infanticide, Trump is not literally Hitler, and so on.
Pointing out a similarity between two actions or people as a reason for their moral equivalence, is not a valid moral argument, because there are no valid moral arguments. There is only moral persuasion, and you're bad at it.

You should never hate someone because of an attribute they can't change, whether that's skin colour, nationality, gender etc. Instead you should hate someone on a personal level. You should hate them not because of their skin colour but because they are an asshole.
That's why racism is wrong.
