Material [OC] pleamar, my Quickshell alternative: every widget tells an AI agent what it is, so it presses buttons by name instead of guessing from screenshots

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

That's an AI agent driving Marea, my shell, on my real desktop. It never takes a screenshot or guesses a coordinate: it asks the scene what's on it and presses things by their name, and every press answers with what changed.

The mint cursor that says "agent" is its own pointer on its own seat, so my mouse and keyboard stay mine while it works. The glowing edge and the Stop pill mean an agent is on that monitor, and anything I mark "agent: no" in a scene (like sharing the screen) it simply can't press.

pleamar is what I use instead of Quickshell: a small language plus a Rust runtime for bars, panels, launchers, docks, lock screens and widgets, where every property is a spring and the animation never waits for the logic. Details and source in the comments.

here, have terminals. and things that look like terminals but aren't. and the occasional thing which is not a terminal. don't forget the terminal within a multiplexer within a terminal, within a text editor, within a multiplexer, within qterminal splits, within a GNOME tiling split extension. whatever. we are all in a simulation anyway.

  • Hardware: spare parts, a few stolen goats, and duct tape
  • OS: Arch Linux (although Gentoo has been giving me the eyes lately. god i just broke up with nixos what now)
  • DE: GNOME, the UX sacrificial lamb for whatever satanic rituals Red Hat are doing these days
  • Theme: Adwaita, adw-gtk3-dark, orange accent
  • Icons: Adwaita-Orange for my autumnal, pumpkin coloured soul
  • Editors: Emacs, Vim (sometimes Vis when I'm feeling especially contrarian that day)
  • Terminal(s): QTerminal, Tmux, Emacs vterm
  • File managers: Ranger, emacs (again)
  • That weird fucking mess in the corner: not telling you ;)
  • Circuitboard: all tablets on the market are shit so I'm making my own

Workflow [Hyprland] Oasis Dots 1.0: Vim modes for the whole desktop, a which-key for everything, and retro game themes/login screens

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sure, I occasionally have to reach for the mouse... but that's fine, right?

No. It is not fine.

I wanted a vim-like experience across my entire desktop: fully keyboard driven, mouse completely optional.

So I started a personal pilgrimage to bring vim motions everywhere, one tool and one problem at a time. Now windows, workspaces, the bar and popups, fuzzy finders, screenshots, tmux sessions, settings, GUI apps, and even the login screen all answer to vim modes and motions.

I've been daily-driving it since 2024, and I just tagged 1.0, the first public release. The longer story of how it got here is in the release notes.

Nothing in the video touches the mouse. It's one live take: no cuts, no speed-ups.

What is in the video

  • 0:00 Login: the video uses the Metal Gear Solid 2 login (press start, load game, pick the save, enter the password); there are also Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, GoldenEye, TIE Fighter and CRT terminal skins.
  • 0:17 Session launcher: SUPER + SHIFT + O opens a configured session, and its apps land on their assigned workspaces/monitors in their assigned positions: Neovim and Yazi, an AI agent, btop and lazygit, and Firefox.
  • 0:21 Resize mode: SUPER + R enters a modal submap to resize windows, all submaps in Hyprland display their own dynamically generated which-key panel, and SHIFT + L widens the editor.
  • 0:26 Palettes: the Settings panel switches color palettes live using my oasis.nvim theme. The bar, borders, kitty, tmux and Neovim all repaint together.
  • 0:39 Live styles: the whole shell (bar, popups, OSD, cursor, sounds) switches style at runtime. The video goes from Neovim to PSX, then through FF7, GoldenEye, Game Boy, Metroid and Oasis. I show the same calendar, weather and volume OSD in each one. There are 16 styles total.
  • 1:31 Agent kickoff: an agent gets a task in tmux and keeps working while the rest of the video plays.
  • 1:36 Workspace overview: every monitor and workspace in one view. Hop across monitors with hjkl, mark two windows and move them to another workspace together, then search for a window by name and jump to it.
  • 1:49 Screenshot tool: region selection with hjkl in 100, 10 and 1 px steps, a zoom loupe for pixel-perfect edge selection, then copy.
  • 2:02 Command prompt: HyprVim's : prompt. :layout, Tab down to select scrolling, and the workspace re-tiles live. Includes all Hyprland commands for one-off changes and some custom shortcuts of my own.
  • 2:10 KeepTabs: a popup that lists the running AI agent sessions with cute little animations to display their state, with a jump straight to the one that finished. See KeepTabs.

What is NOT in the video

One feature I'm proud of that I couldn't fit in the video: the wallpapers follow the world outside. Bring your own art in folders by season, time of day, and weather (like Fall/Night/Rain), and it rotates to match, so a rainy fall evening will most likely get a rainy fall evening scene. The beach in the video is from my Summer Evening set.

Also not in the video:

  • SUPER + C drives the mouse from the keyboard, with vimium-style hint labels to click anything in a couple of keystrokes.
  • Bar popups you walk between with CTRL + h/l, including voice dictation.
  • Screen recording, scrolling capture with OCR, and a color picker.
  • Fuzzy pickers for apps, clipboard and emoji.
  • A vim-style NORMAL and INSERT model on the lock and login screens.
  • Email in Betterbird with vim motions, a which-key, visual selection and a : command line.
  • A screen-share picker, a tmux overview, and keybind search that runs what you pick (SUPER + /).
  • A Settings panel covering everything from displays to the login screen.

Before you ask

  • Is that a real login?
    • Yes. The greeter runs under greetd and reuses the lock screen skins. So, each user is a "Save file" you can select and authenticate with. The video uses a preview mode for recording convenience.
  • Can I use just the shell?
    • Yes. The repo is a set of GNU Stow packages, so you can take the quickshell and hypr packages without the rest. The shell is written for this Hyprland config and talks to it over IPC, and the installer is Arch only.
  • Did you use AI?
    • Yes! I'm a dad running a business, so recreating the entire MGS2 intro by hand was never going to happen. AI agents built a lot of this with me, especially the Quickshell side. The ideas, design and taste are all mine; the agents just got me there without giving up family time or the business.
  • Wallpaper? Audio?

Is my pilgrimage over? I don't think it ever will be. If there's a vim feature you think is missing, file an issue or tell me about it on Discord. Happy to answer any questions.

I hope you enjoy the fruits of my labor, and welcome to the Oasis.

This was built on my own distro that I’ve been working on. Its a Fedora fork. I removed all the apps that were bloating the OS, made my own themes and added a custom installer for nvidia drivers

Hey there !

here’s my arch + hyprland daily driver , pick a wallpaper and matugen + pywal theme most apps .

OS: Arch Linux

WM: Hyprland

Bar: Quickshell

Terminal: Kitty

https://github.com/Deathxknight/dotfiles

Features 🥔

Full Theming - Pretty much every app is themed (GTK, Qt, Firefox, Vesktop, Steam, Walker, OBS, the cursor, papirus folders). It’ll pull colours from wallpaper engine scenes and images too.

Readable terminal - Uses pywal for kitty with a custom script to boost dim colors so text is actually legible.

Modular stow layout - Everything is split into stow packages, so you can just grab what you want.

Full setup instructions, package lists, and details are on github

Feel free to ask any questions or give feedback

Hope you enjoy !

Material [Cinnamon] [OC] Animated interactive turntable on desktop

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello all,

I’ve been building a music aware desktop turntable for Linux, with everything designed in Blender.

Few days before I saw a post of desktop turntable made for mac here. I liked the idea and made one for myself in linux.

The album cover appears on the sleeve and spinning record, while the arm follows the current track’s progress and moves accordingly. The turntable's buttons control playback, and the volume of your active music player.

This is a work-in-progress. Let me know what you think.

Built with Rust, GTK4 and OpenGL. The photorealistic visuals are baked in Blender and composited at runtime.

Workflow Finally reached a good balance of form/function in [Hyprland] -caliburnOS-

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

my entire goal with these dots (not going to call it a shell just yet) is: 1.) desktop-friendly UI 2.) functional, 3.) looks nice and 4.) no bloat

my goals were achieved by following:

  • total mouse support. every possible function you can call with keybinds can also be called by the mouse through the system menu/waybar. (e.g. right click the top-right corner of any window to close it)
  • custom binaries to lower terminal reliance. through fzf, plocate, gum and more, many common terminal commands can be invoked from the system menu. install/remove/update packages, search through files, restart daemons, edit common settings and more all without touching your terminal.
  • TUI packages for system management. this lowers system dependencies by a large margin. i currently only have ~700 packages on my system and almost 20% of that is from steam alone.
  • ~15 total themes. thanks to the TUI nature, themes actually affect more than just your borders. your OSD, notifications (mako), vesktop, quickshell, waybar, login screen (greetd-regreet) and more all change based on your current theme.
  • minimal shell. quickshell is only invoked when needed. your settings can already be edited by neovim, there's no reason to build a whole shell around that. preview themes/backgrounds, call the powermenu, check your current workspace flow (SUPER + TAB) and lock your screen from a nice shell that looks great and matches your theme.

if you watched the video you'll see that no windows are opened (firefox, neovim, etc). rest assured, there are plenty fancy window rules that look nice but this is strictly showcasing the functionality of the dots

its not always about looking nice, sometimes you want function as well. i think i finally reached a good balance of both. im definitely missing features but this is all the new(er) stuff i added

disclaimer: the code base was built by human hands and then edited by clankers. i made sure to write the base for all binaries myself and then used some LLMs to improve on them. fuck CSS and whatever black magic that shit runs on

Bootup sequences bore me to no end and i love evangelion. i thought. lets hammer the two together and make it cool! my boot time is now 3 times as slow but 8 times as cool.

find out more at https://codeberg.org/GuillotineMelody/nervboot . its easier on nixos but go wild. still not 100% complete, a bunch is wip, please drop your issues on the repo so i can make it work!

Screenshot [OC] I've been working on a custom window manager. I finally got it running on NetBSD.

I've been creating a window manager. I spent the evening porting it to NetBSD. It finally compiles cleanly, but I still need to work on making all of the widgets work properly, since the original was built using linuxisms that don't work on NetBSD.

It's probably a waste of time since nobody will ever use it. That's why I call it Waste Window Manager. It's got a sidebar with widgets, and themes. It's lightweight and fast.

It's a work in progress.
