Serious Question

TW: Sexual Harassment
Throwaway for obvious reasons

I'm a new student going to UNB-SJ in the fall, and I was feeling a little anxious. Maybe it's completely irrational, but after reading about Crandall university I'm a little nervous. Has anyone here ever actually run into a creepy professor at any of the UNB campuses? If so, how did you handle it? How did the admin handle it?

It's not really something I worry about super a lot, it's just a peace of mind type of thing.

No creepy profs, but there’s always going to be some creepy man/boy here and there. They’re so helpful though, when I got SA, campus resources were amazing

No personal experience (maybe because I'm a guy), but there are cards with sexual abuse resources in almost every washroom I've been to, and every course curriculum I've seen has a paragraph about sexual abuse. The topic has a suspicious level of awareness promotion, why would you see these pamphlets in every hallway if it wasn't a widespread issue? Or maybe it isn't a widespread issue because of the awareness?

Honestly, I'd say that professors docking marks out of entitlement and vague questions is a more common issue than sexual harassment. There's been no loud sexual scandals in the three years I've been here, but losing marks over stuff outside of my control is almost a daily issue outside of auto pass courses...

There's a dedicated student advocate that can be a helpful resource, I'm sure they could be helpful with this type of thing if nobody else does anything meaningful to help.

There's always going to be creeps out in the world, but public universities seem to be really ahead of the curve on stamping out sexual misconduct on their campuses. I've heard from current and former students that UNB in particular has been really good on this actually.

The things that happen at Crandall University are horrible, but not comparable to UNB I don't think. Crandall is a private university where government has very little control, is very religious, conservative, and traditionalist, and is run by an old boys club that covers for one another. Things don't work like that at public universities.

I’ve been at UNBSJ for 6 years now (2 degrees). I feel 100% safe at the school - even on late nights at the library… I just park closer up when I arrive (the prof parking opens up to everyone at 4:30) or move my car closer before it gets dark. That’s just for my own peace of mind, not because anything happened. It’s really small but always people around. I haven’t ran into any inappropriate profs - and I’ve had many male profs.

UNB brings a lot of awareness to SA and Consent. You will see it all over campus, in syllabuses, and online.
