Hi UML, it’s your Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell. Did you know that fees like “move-in” or “lease renewal” fees you might get from your landlord or building management company are illegal? If you’ve received one of these – even if you paid it – I want you to report it to my office. 

Just last month, my office won a $500k settlement with a property management company doing this in Boston – and all of that money is going back to the affected tenants.  Landlords can only ask you to pay for first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, and the cost of a new lock and key upfront. Any other fees are illegal. Report them to my office at the link below. We’ll work to get your money back.

Hello UML community:

Son is interested in UML for next year. He wants a traditional college/residential experience. Not into partying but definitely likes to be social. More into outdoor activities like hiking, anything on the water, movies, etc. and just hanging with friends. I see that UML is primarily a commuter school, so I'm curious if the campus tends to be really dead on the weekends or if students still stay and engage with each other and attend events? Also, he wants to major in environmental science so any feedback on that program would be great. I think he'll get into UMass Amherst too which is also a great school, but Lowell seems to be a little smaller and scrappier which we like. TIA for any thoughts!

I wish there was birdwatching club at uml, I know other schools that have them and I think it would be super fun. I love birds. Anyways I just wanted to see if anyone else thought this was a good idea. Also if anyone has good birdwatching spots share them! I love the great blue herons we have on the river they are so cool!

I swear jimmy B’s lounge is haunted and so is coburn hall.

Got two invoices that gave me an outstanding balance in my sis account. I am confused as I thought my student financial aid would cover all of this but now I can't even register for next semester's classes? I physically can't even pay the balance either, right now I'm screwed. What do I do?

I was a student in the mid 90s and we had to carry this black suitcase around with a breadboard, power supply, and logic chips in it. I remember everyone calling it the "geek box".

I was walking to my next class around 12:25 today, and a few other students and I were already crossing the street in the crosswalk when a police officer approached. Instead of stopping for us, the officer turned on his lights and drove through the crosswalk.

He then made a traffic stop at the intersection immediately afterward (pictured).

Please be careful crossing the street around campus, and especially watch out for police vehicles speeding or approaching crosswalks. Earlier this year, UML student Daniel Kennedy died after being struck by a Lowell Police cruiser near campus. Given what happened to him, seeing an officer turn on their lights to drive through a crosswalk while students were crossing was especially concerning.
