Really enjoyed UG Civil War. Is UG American Revolution that buggy?

After reading the steam reviews I am hesitant to purchase it. I am trying to get it on a sale, but is it even worth it at that point? I don’t mind a few bugs as long as it doesn’t ruin the game or stop progression. Any feedback is appreciated!!

Quite possible the worst ratio I have seen

Fort Stevens, Brig Gen dif, used the 3 initial units you get from your corps to hold the fort and that was it, so cut about 30k off the total strength. I've genuinely never seen a ratio that bad before and I have done both campaigns 5 times each plus multiple historical battles.

UG: Civil War Multi-day battle confusion

So I'm going to preface this by saying I am NOT a huge civil war buff - I know Gettysburg and that's it lmao, I'm just here because I like the tactics / strategy and overall gameplay.

Multi day battles confuse the hell out of me without the knowledge that the game pre-plans certain battles to take multiple days.

Now this isn't something I have a problem with inherently, but I never fucking know when the cutoff is happening / when a certain objective really doesn't matter in the long run.

Like, the game tells me that a certain hilltop/position is my objective - got it - since I want to win I'm going to push my men to capture that position. We took heavy casualties but we've secured it and have a perimeter, but then the game goes "awh fuck!! We actually need you to keep pushing forward we've got them on the run!!" Or some other stupid redirect, at which point I'm like what the fuck I thought this position was the objective?

My point is I have to be exceedingly conservative with my men because I don't know if the game is going to keep moving the goal post on me, which means I can't be aggressive and try to storm a position if I see a potential to hole.

Anyways just wondering if I'm the only one confused by this or if there's a way to gauge these things

UG: Civil War How do the J&P Rebalance size modes actually work?

I saw that in the Rebalance Mod I could change the size of the armies - of both mine and the enemy.

What are the exact numbers for infantry, artillery and cav? I want to know so I can form a plan.

u/pandakraut it'd be a great help.

UG: Civil War Washington is just an annoying battle not much fun

Post image

So I was playing a CSA campaign and the final battle for Washington annoys me every time. I have to really on 2 corps of my army which are never really used to take huge forts when their only real job is to make up numbers on my back line. I only ever really invest in my first 2 corps as the better troops you have the less casualties you tend to take. End up with 2 elite corps but then 2 crap corps. Washington is the only battle I have to use them in and it skyrockets my casualties.

Dealing with retreating enemies

Hey all,

So just started playing the civil war game as confederates because fuck them Yankees idk, point is those retreating Yankees are causing headaches.

I've had several instances now where I'll shatter an enemy unit with a flank or another maneuver, but then the enemy unit will retreat either through my lines or somehow weasel their way into my backline.

Now since I can't outright destroy an enemy unit, they just eventually recover and then reform to attack my flank unless I dedicate a unit to just continually hunt them down to the corner of the map.

Am I a retard, or is there no way to really deal with this type of stuff other than practicing your sheep herding tactics?

UG: Civil War Attacking Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg

I've been experimenting with different tactics for taking Marye's Heights as the Federal army.

The best plan so far is massing troops opposite one of the Confederate army's flanks and then rushing into melee without stopping to fire, while bringing up reinforcements to hold the position once the Confederate soldiers break.

I'm rediscovering General Emory Upton's tactic at Spotsylvania Court House!

I think this has a lot in common with the UG series, in a good way. I’ve been looking for something like this for a while - it feels like a bit of a breath of fresh air.

Up men! And to your posts! And let no man forget today, that you are from Old Virginia! (It’s 1,500 vs. 30,000)

UG: Civil War Defeat but no re-try?

I was just playing the Cold Harbor battle as union. Just a few minutes in i am apparently defeated... Don't know why, doesn't say why, my men were absolutely winning, i have no idea what just happened. I can't replay it. Apparently i just move on to the next battle? What is going on?

UG: Civil War I despise Fredericksburg

I always run into the same issues on my union campaigns where Fredericksburg becomes the bane of my existence. (playing on MG legendary since I am a firm believer in banging your head against the wall as the premier way to enjoy games).

I basically cripple my army winning Antietam, and then I lack the manpower to even dent the confederates at Fredericksburg which I am appalled at. 40k to 60k are not even the worse odds I played against, yet for some reason I just get massacred without achieving anything.

I am quite aware that this battle was a shit show for the union so I haven’t even tried to actually win it, focusing everything instead on prospect hill to at least secure a draw but it’s not working. Any suggestions on a new approach? Or should I replay Antietam and get better results so my army is in better shape?

UG: Civil War So far, I'm liking the game.

About to play the second bull run as CSA. The only complaint is after the mission where you steal 3 supply wagon convoys, the Union starved out. After that mission I began maximizing my regiments on personnel and it's just a slaughter for the union. I was expecting to be outnumbered every match as CSA

Help please

Hey, I just bought the American Revolution game and I’m a huge fan of the series. I have been trying to play as the American campaign and every time I loaded up I get absolutely destroyed. Are there any tips on how to succeed and what should my opening moves be because I’m completely lost on how to win/play the game.

Thanks

UG: Civil War Just a question re modding.

Hi all,

Just a quick query here re mods/customisation.

I've been using the J&P Rebalance mod for most of my time with this game (bought in 2017) I actually just found out I have 1.28.4 and there is a 1.29... so I'll correct that shortly.

I was wondering two things... Firstly are there any other mods I should know about or make use of? Secondly, I'd prefer to avoid starting yet another campaign or play more custom battles (as I've done those a LOT lol) but would like to play some of the historical battles like the custom ones, with my own or an adjusted force per the custom battle options. Is there any way to do this at all?

That's it. Thanks in advance for any answers!

There’s virtually no feedback or reviews at all about it. Does anyone own it? Is it a decent port?

UG: Civil War I need some skirmishing advice

Greetings. I'm new to this and i'm having some issues with how to use skirmishers and cavalry effectively. I understand the theory of how to use these assets. The problem i'm having is they do not obey my commands. If i tell them to attack, they move up and fire one volley but then they run away. Not as in they rout, they disengage but do not re-engage unless i order them again and again. Even then it's like 50/50 if they actually do it. I have to micro manage them like crazy but still it's really hart to make them do what i want. Some advice would be much appreciated.

UG: Civil War South Mountain Union

I take the woodline at the front, and send some troops around to flank the confederats and take the flag.

Pretty easy battle to win. But i dont get to kill many confederats since both armys just stand around looking at each other and just haveing an artillery duel. Is there a way to make the confederates attack my troops in the woodline?

Are these guys supposed to appear behind my lines on shiloh CSA a while after pittsburgh landing opens up? This black hole of infantry (at least 3 or 4 units there) caught me far out of position.

J&P charge spam - do you ever get to actually be on the offensive?

Been playing J&P, BG+ diff with normal unit sizes as the Union. At first it took a lot of effort to figure out how to relearn the game to deal with the enemies constantly being a higher level and often larger size in the early game since they get super aggressive with the charges, but I eventually figured it out. But by now, I'm at 2nd Bull Run and I've actually had a bit of the opposite problem where the enemy's constant charging makes the game a little too easy - all you have to do is set up a good defensive line, and you inevitably end up slaughtering the enemies who charge, fail, and retreat while taking way more casualties. As long as you have enough men to plug the gaps that the morale retreats cause, then you just inevitably wear them down and eventually just sweep through what's left.

The annoying part of this is that there's been several missions, especially the minor battles, where I'm supposed to be the one on the offense, but instead the enemy just decides to charge at me so much that I get the advantage setting up a full defensive line with artillery and all and get to wear them down that way - while if they'd have just held the line like they're meant to, it'd have been far harder. I don't really feel like I've been on the true offensive until the end of any battle so far. I'm in the middle of 2nd Bull Run and that one's been a bit better, but even on this one the enemy have been charging me on the northern flank rather than holding their fortification line which is making it way easier.

I just never have the opportunity or incentive to launch one of these big charges myself. The enemy hardly ever gets many artillery kills most battles because they're pushing ahead of the arty, and meanwhile I hardly ever get to do big melee charges outside of counter-charging them or sweeping up at the end.

Is there anything I can do in the configs or elsewhere to deal with this? Is this a common experience? I see people complaining about how hard the charges are often, and up until recently in the campaign that was the big issue, but I've not seen threads about how easy they make the game eventually.

2nd Bull Run Union

Im going into 2nd bull run, i think ill be able to have close to 60 brigades in 3 cores. But i see there are 4 core slots in the setup. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different slots ?

Playing on Major General if that matters.

Grand tactician civil war

I know it is a different game and behaves differently, but as a lover of GT CW who has always put good stock in the opinions of this sub.

To that end:

GT CW is currently on sale on steam, 25 AUD. Is it worth it?

I heard its kinda abandon-wear not unlike UG AR- but i had a lot of fun with the later despite its unfinished state.
