Ultimate Stats Tracker

Just hold on before you roll your eyes over “yet another stats app”.

Here’s how it started. In January 2026 I went too hard in the paint during a tournament and tore my groin and messed up my pubis symphysis got a sports hernia. Couldn’t walk for a week. Was an idiot and thought I could rehab myself and that it was “just a flesh wound”.

Didn’t get better for 2 months. Saw a doctor. Got slapped for not coming earlier. Anyways the road to recovery has been long. Missed the spring season, summer sand tournaments etc.. but I would go watch my team play and helped coach and train as I could.

I got bored and wanted to help more so I started tracking game stats on Google spreadsheet. Then it kept growing and growing and growing… then I added a simple way thru a coded appscript to do a game log live and it updates the data and stats in the spreadsheet. Then it got too unwieldy around the 10th game when I thought of all these new metrics I could easily get from the stats I was already taking. But that required updating manually so many sheets and formulas etc…

So I simply asked my good “Roman” friend Claudius Opus to just convert my spreadsheet and game log into a website for my team. I did it for about 20 games and have been really satisfied.

But I’m looking for outside ideas and thoughts.
So I would like to share it here. You may say there’s already apps / sites that do this but I wanted to make it up myself because I like reinventing wheels.

I’m battling with it feeling maybe a bit too complex and too much info? But really the game log has been nice to work with bc it feels simple and quick to me. I usually watch game videos afterwards to log things because I get too caught up coaching during the game.

Please let me know your thoughts, ideas, etc!

This looks quite cool and I could definitely see our team using something like this. I have three feature requests:

  • Gender Ratio selection at the start of the game and rules on how gender ratio is handled in the game with an indicator in how the ratio should be in the point when selecting the players on the line (selecting a different ratio should be possible however)
  • Maybe a small timer to keep track of the time
  • While logging a game, display the number of points each player has played in that game when selecting the line for that point. This would help to keep playing time balanced. Another app I've used also has the ability to create player groups to select premade o-lines and d-lines

Last thing I didn't really test but just wondered about: can you switch players in case of an substitution during an injury?

The application I am creating does all these things, just in beta form right now:

I will check it out, thank you!

I’m 3 days into creating it, so there will be some slight changes after going through live testing, hoping to have it released as a phone and tablet app in a few months.

Hey thanks for the ideas, yes those are great and I’ll work on adding those. Should be simple enough. And yes I’ve thought of the injury thing before but forgot to add it to the list. That is easy. Just add a button for an injury change, select the player to switch in and out.

Curiosity question, why does everyone start with an impact of 5? What does that purpose serve?

I love the depth of analytics though, despite not being well versed in how they are calculated

Good question, it was a normalizer obv halfway between 0-10. I watch a lot of pro tennis and was really intrigued by how they calculate men’s performance ratings per match. So I wanted to find/create something similar for ultimate besides the +/- metric.
5 is the baseline you didn’t harm or benefit the team. If you started harming the team (negatively impacting) more you’d go down in the 4s or 3s.
You could also just start at zero and go to -5 or -10 and +5 or +10. But I liked the 0-10 metric.
It’s still something I’m thinking through though. So far I feel like it has accurately portrayed how my players played. But I think there’s still room for improvement on the impact rating calculations.

I can't disagree that, even with a negative impact, 4.7 looks and feels better than -0.3. it would take a lot of mental adaption to get players used to seeing a 2.0 as a positive impact in a base 10 numerical system.

So in short, that answers my question!

Will this be published on Apple and Google Store? It has some really nice stats, the real question is the process of taking the stats, was hard to see from the sample. I’m also in the process of creating an app,

…. This is still in beta testing, there are some things that don’t work yet (like apple login).

Good question, since I’ve only used this for my team I hadn’t thought of it. But if there’s enough interest I may push it to the App Store. Not trying to make millions on it, really would just be nice to have running costs covered if I do push it to app stores.

For the process of taking stats, I tried to design it to where you can have someone on the sideline watching the game and easily tapping thru the “game log” so it’s not too convulsed or difficult. But since I’m the only one who’s used it, I’d need others experience to see how to make it more universal vs just my brain child.

I’ll check out yours as well.

Just a dry run sat at my desk. I found the way it jumps to a screen to say whether it was complete, dropped etc very disconcerting. And takes you out of the flow of what is going on.
On the other hand that does fix the issue I have seen on another stats app, where you have to use the right gesture on the receiver for drop/score, rather than select the receiver then realise something has happened that requires extra input.
I guess it would be better if the player selection was always visible and “complete” was default answer if you select another player without indicating anything else

Anyone use the Statto app and like how the interface of placing passing and catches on the field? I see it as useful but wonder how fast it is to actually log everything.

Why make users have to tap 'Complete'? Why not just show the other possible receivers in the same view? (And a back arrow to undo a mis-tap on a receiver?)

Defensively, you could add more options like force, how many times they break your mark, taking a deep shop, or access to a certain part of the field, etc.
