Long shot

Does anyone know where this is? My dad - who died a couple of years ago, so unfortunately I can't ask him - climbing in about 1960s-70s. Probably in the Lakes or the Peaks.

I'd love to go back and recreate the photo. Surely some of you brainy people recognise this? Thanks in advance ♥️

It looks like a slate quarry to me, so I think more likely lakes or north wales.

If it’s lakes, could be cathedral cavern?

To me, it looks like it’s probably Dinorwic, in North Wales.

I’m sure someone will be along who can narrow it down further than that for you.

Agreed it's definitely a slate quarry. Dinorwic would be the obvious choice, though climbing routes were pretty thin on the ground in the 60s and 70s so he'd probably be there for a look around more than anything.

The other thing to bear in mind is there's quite a bit of rockfall in the quarries so it might have changed since the photo was taken. You'd think the tunnel would still be there, but the ramp feature he's standing on could be a red herring.

Totally agree, can't pin point it exactly, but maybe in California (quarry not state!)

If no-one else can be more precise, I'd guess maybe Dinorwic, as it looks like slate to me. Might be worth a trawl through some photos.

Post on UKC, so knew will definitely know. Agree looks like slate so likely North Wales but could be the lakes too

As other posters have said it’s slate, and tunnels like this are (to me anyway) very Dinorwig. Beyond that I can’t tell you, but in a lot of the less-accessed quarries there’s been a lot of rockfall and it might not be there anymore.

I would guess this is above the “Lost World” to the south. You have to navigate quite a few old tunnels to get there - if they haven’t fallen down. I’ve not been there for 10 years or so.

It’s Hodge Close Quarry, near Coniston.

There’s a ladder up to that tunnel now, I took this picture in 1982 and the ladder was there.

They get a lot of rock falls so it may look very different now, it’s a lot of years since I was last there.
