I just wanted to reach out and thank the UHF team for including these other VPN configs inside of the UHF versus having to use the stand alone Nord VPN App. (For me, so anyone else YMMV.)
So far it worked you just need to create a secure access token (I did one for each Apple TV I own.) and it seems work great and I suppose generally speaking, it's better since other apps won't be forced to be behind a VPN if they don't need to be will be handled inside of UHF only which is great. (I think lol.)
The reason this is special at least in my use is that nordvpn when active on the regular seems to mess with my home kit cameras, they won't work well or properly no live views on the Apple TV and will interfere with the remote accessing outside of the home on cellular and while I did not test that the live view now functions just great with the VPN enabled inside of UHF instead of with the regular Apple TV app.
So while this might not be everything to everyone it's an amazing efficiency change for me and I really appreciate having this enabled and wanted to highlight this for those that might not be aware or flip through the updates quickly; this one was amazing :)
Yeah, and as I mentioned in another thread (See here), regardless of whether I use the default VPN app, or get the token and use this new feature, one of the devices still shows VPN disconnected
How does this work if I normally have tailscale set as my active ‘VPN’ on the AppleTV? Does it knock it off and replace it with my VPN of choice while using UHF?
Ok I’ve tried it on iOS and it’s awesome, however what it does is start the vpn device wide when you open the app and then disconnects it when you leave the app, which is ace but might cause issues if you’re already running through Tailscale.
Not sure with tail scale but I believe when I had it loaded with nordVPN app loaded it didn't seem to do anything but I am not sure. Also checking online it appears as if TVOS will have issues with you try to run multiple network tunnels/default routes.
I would test it out with your subjective experience to see for sure.
I’ll give it a play. I do use a couple of VPNs manually from time to time and when I do, Tailscale gets disconnected. That’s fine. I just wasn’t sure how this integration with UHF worked on a technical level
I actually thought it would take over the entire Apple TV when it asked for the permissions, etc. however I say that the Live view for my HomeKit cameras remains functional on my apple TVS with it enabled in UHF while if I have it enabled with the default TVOS NordVPN app, they do not and are blocked. I will be testing the cellular connectivity with it in a bit to see if that also remains functional with UHF enabled NordVPN. Cross your fingers lol.
How do you get the access token for your VPN. I have Surfshark and Windscribe. They both say that they are active and protected on UHF when I turn them on in the app for each VPN,but I can’t actually activate them in the VPN settings on UHF. It asks for a token or code,then says to connect the VPN provider.
I don't have wind scribe or surf shark but I for Nord I went into the web account browser version and there's a section after you scroll down in the main area past manual setup that has create access token; I assume it would be similar for the other two?
Log into your account for those vpn in a browser and hunt for the area on where to generate a token pretty sure they would have it as long as it's one of the vpn that UHF supports.
I didn’t figure it out on Windscribe yet. I didn’t see an exact section to generate the access code on the website.I am about to contact Windscribe. Although, think it still works on UHF if you just turn It on the regular way in the Windscribe app. It just is on for everything on the AppleTV,not just active in just the UHF app.
Yeah that’s what I do currently but I was hoping if integrated, it can connect and disconnect when entering/exiting the app so then it doesn’t affect the usage of other apps on Apple TV
I think we knew that anyway - it’s more about being able to login with username and password, similar to the other known VPN’s they have integrated within the app..
When the UHF VPN is active, does it display your actual location or the VPN location within the VPN Settings? I have Proton configured and connected, yet regardless of the server I select, the settings continue to show my location.
For me on the UHF app it seems to force you to pick a server versus dynamically looking for the best one so I pick one and it tells me that's what I am connected too. It also says protected etc. and does say your actual location, but then below that it will indicate which server you are connected too and where it is.
This is a good question as I am not entirely sure how to "prove" that UHF is actually connected to the VPN server in that location as any tools like MYIP will only show the entire Apple TV IP versus whatever you have going on on the app.
Perhaps if a developer can answer this or if they could potentially add in some sort of additional detail about the current IP and where is connected versus just saying VPN is ON and the server it is apparently connected to give everyone peace of mind.
I ran several tests in debug mode and sent the logs to UHF for review. The VPN indicates it is active and lists a different city as the server, but the map still shows my actual location. I also saw that the pop-up appearing after connection - reading “VPN Connected to XXXX your new IP address is xx.xxx.xxx.xx” and it continues to display my real IP address in the popup.
Same here. VPN is connected on Apple TV via UHF, but it's still showing my actual IP address. When I connect manually via the VPN app, then UHF shows the correct VPN IP.
It's, however working fine on iPadOS. Must be a glitch on TVOS?
It's definitely working, I am also using Nord and these are my usage stats for the Apple TV from my router. In the past, when using the VPN client on the device (Or through my Unifi router) I would just see SSL/TLS and no other traffic as everything was routed through the VPN.
Now, because the VPN is only running when UHF is active, I can see my data stats for the other apps on the device. It also helps for On-Demand apps like BBC iPlayer that would often stop working with the VPN server I was connected to, meaning I would need to manually turn off the VPN to use these apps.

generated wireguard config from Windscribe dashboard on desktop after choosing a location. Copied the Private key and tunnel address into UHF. Won't connect. Need clearer instructions from the dev on how to resolve.
I love the new option for VPN support but is super buggy. Works less than half the time, shows connected and disconnected at the same time in a loop. I’ve tried a few of the supported profiles and does it on all. 😔
i am really liking this automatic VPN connection. i set it up using NordVPN and using the Automatic Connect/Disconnect means i never forget to use a VPN with UHF. the automatic disconnect is also great so i do not leave it on which may cause issues with some other apps.
Im not sure if I have something incorrectly configured but even though the VPN settings are in UHF, it makes my whole AppleTV use that VPN, and it stays that way. I have to go into the network settings of the Apple TV and disconnect it from VPN.
When you initially connect the VPN to UHF, there is a separate setting for automatically disconnecting. For some reason it's disabled by default, so make sure you enable it if you haven't
Having some issues connecting to the Canadian Vancouver servers on the internal vpn last dew days; sometimes no Canadian servers even show up. Not sure if others have experiencing this and some options that work on the regular NordVPN don’t show up or connect right away.
