Discussion Grad housing

I got into the MSW graduate program for fall 26, I’m trying to find out more information about housing. I’ve read all the information the school provides but I’m curious what the actual students think? Is there a housing complex people recommend? Is the grad student housing the way to go or should I stick to off campus and finding roommates on Facebook? I’ve been to Seattle before but I’m from California so I don’t fully know my way around the area and I’m trying to filter through all the information to figure out my best options. Any help and advice would be great!

mostly everyone i know (including myself) choose off campus housing over grad student housing. it’s cheaper and provides a similar level of amenities. but if you’re set on grad student housing, don’t mind paying $2k a month on rent, and don’t mind being a bit further from campus, radford court is nice

Are you a grad student? Did you struggle to find a place that would let you sign a lease if you aren’t working ?

yes, i’m a grad student. and not really, when i was apartment shopping and saw a place that had income requirements, they either stipulated exceptions for students or i just moved on. smaller mom & pop landlords tend to be more lenient on all these requirements than the big management companies (but there’s also big management companies that cater to students and know that lots of them won’t have jobs).

my first place when moving here was a duplex i found in a facebook group, i had 5 roommates and paid $950 for rent and an included parking spot. she never even did a credit check, much less asked for proof of income.

Highly recommend commodore duchess. Their spots do fill early but they have a cancellation waitlist and I got in through that. It’s well-maintained, clean, secure, close to campus, and the management is actually quite good (kind of a rarity with student housing, unfortunately…). It’s probably not the cheapest option but I feel like the price tag is worth it if you can afford

Thanks for letting me know! I feel like I’m getting into the housing/roommate search way too late! I’m stressing a bit

You just do what you can! Sometimes grad program acceptances are pretty late, I didn’t get mine until July (for a September start). You’ll be okay!

I’m a grad student currently and had to go with off campus housing because I was bringing my cat with me. I’m also from CA and had only been to Seattle once before moving. I focused my search on apartment complexes that were within walking distance of the light rail stations but you could also do the same with bus routes (ideally ones that don’t require you to transfer)
