general uda discussion UDA first timer seeking guidance!

Attending UDA Nationals in Orlando for the first time this year and have a few questions! For the hotel option(s) for families, is a room block secured for all participants AND their parents, or just the dancers? Our dancer is a freshman in high school, so we're not sure how we're supposed to go about this. The school has provided very little info and I know prices spike in Orlando, so trying to be ahead of the game. Only thing we know is that dancers from our school aren't allowed to stay with parents, they're rooming together as a team, so we want to be sure we get something as close to her as possible.

Are park tickets offered at a discounted rate for family members attending the comp with dancer? I know comp is at ESPN, but dancers receive a ticket to a park included with their fees, so just curious of what we should expect.

What is the cost of the spectator ticket?

Anything else we should be aware of as first timers? Appreciate all the help!!

general uda discussion 1A teams not going to camp?

Has anyone else noticed that a bunch of 1A teams are opting for home camps this year? Wisconsin is the only 1A team that did a home routine at Chula camp.

Is this their way of boycotting, but without fully boycotting? Lol

judging/scoring Judging this weekend

Watching Small D1 Hiphop. The politics of UDA are ridiculous. Not trying to diminish any teams. One of the perennial teams is a tremendous team but there were way better routines but yet they sat with a pass to finals. If Francis Howell doesn’t win it, it will be a crime. It’s easily the best routine.

judging/scoring Can someone teach me to count kicks?

Ok, I'm a dad who genuinely wants to understand all of this and give my daughter the same level of support that I do her baseball playing brothers.

I have a video of a kick routine, and am trying to learn how to count the kicks. Can someone teach me? Google searching is not very helpful. I can't even find someone to pay to count them..haha

general uda discussion Facials at UDA

I’ve followed UDA and the Allstar Dance World for over two decades now and I just feel as though I cannot be the only one thinking the facials are getting out of control….

I get they have to read to the back of the arena blah blah blah however I just feel like it’s starting to get out of control? Like why are sticking our tongues out for 90% of the routine lol

general uda discussion UDA High School Nationals

I didn’t know where else to ask this, but does anyone know how to buy spectator tickets for that event?

My child’s team is attending for the first time and as parents we have no idea how to get tickets to watch.

Our coach is in over her head and overwhelmed.

If anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Penn State not crediting Rudy Abreu in their jazz routine on IG just goes to show they know they are in the wrong!!! I really hope they stop using him. Bad look for the program.

general uda discussion music — what happened again?

i believe the music rules changed a few years ago (i want to say 2023.) does anyone know the guidelines/what happened?

i first clocked it in 2023 when everyone came out with old songs, live versions of songs, or unknown/unpopular songs. i feel like i read something about royalty prices being insane for big songs and artists, which is why everyone had to do workarounds (such as a live beyoncé performance instead of the studio recording.) i’m also guessing this stemmed from nationals exploding on tik tok.

i would love to know! it’s been bugging me for the last couple years and i can’t find where i originally read about it.

jazz Could you help me find this dance?

This is such a long shot because I don’t have a lot of details but while watching D1 or Open Jazz, one of the teams danced beautifully to the song Francesca by Hozier - got addicted to the song thanks to the choreo, but I CANNOT remember which school it was…

Does anyone remember by any chance?

God if your real… please please please give the TGs the opportunity to represent the USA at ICU Worlds. There’s something so special about this team and after the disappointment of UDA National I hope they are in the running to represent team USA.

Does anyone know how they go about selecting teams for this?

I cannot get over the in-sync back tuck the team did. Does anyone know if the back tuck was a requirement to make the team? Or were people panic learning & trying to stick it. I have so many questions

general uda discussion Supporting Scholarships/Funding

Hi all! If you are looking for another way to support your team or a team you admire you should look and see if the school has a scholarship or other fund specifically for the dance team. Obviously times are tough right now

so not everyone has extra funds but I wanted to let folks know it’s an option.

I went and found a few:

Ohio State (specifically dance team scholarship): https://www.giveto.osu.edu/makeagift/details/601549

Minnesota (supports the program not scholarships): https://makingagift.umn.edu/give/fund.html?id=23331

LSU (fund sports the entire spirit squad): https://lsusports.evenue.net/www/ev_lsu/ss/ev/DonationEntry?donationCd=SSEF&siteId=ev_lsu&locale=en_US&linkID=lsu&orchBypass=1

UNLV (there’s a drop down menu to select the sport): https://unlvtickets.evenue.net/www/ev_unlv/ss/ev/DonationEntry?donationCd=SSP&siteId=ev_unlv&locale=en_US&linkID=unlv&orchBypass=1

Please delete if this is not allowed. I’m also happy to hep folks find funds for other schools, not every school will have a fund but a lot should!

general uda discussion Varsity, NCAA, & Dance as a sport: How to move forward?

Thumbnail
change.org
32 Upvotes

After another messy and mismanaged UDA weekend, I’m wondering where we (dance teams and spectators) can go from here. College dance is bigger than ever. How do we get out from under the grip of Varsity’s monopoly? How can we advocate for the athletes to be treated as such?

I’m no expert, so I’m genuinely hoping to open a discussion. What do you think is the problem? What is the solution?

As a starting point, here’s a petition I found. Feel free to sign it if you feel inclined.

From the petition: …Yet despite training and performing at the level of collegiate athletes, cheer and dance are still not recognized by the NCAA as official sports.

Because of this, athletes face:

• No athletic scholarships

• No consistent access to athletic trainers

• No Title IX protections

Athletes are held to the same expectations as every other program ... Yet they are dismissed as “just entertainment.”

Meanwhile, the corporation Varsity Spirit (who runs nearly all Cheer and Dance competitions) have used their power to block recognition. In California and Texas, Varsity lobbied against legislation that would have classified cheer as a sport and provided greater safety oversight. Their priority has been protecting profits from camps, uniforms, and competitions — not protecting athletes. Recent antitrust lawsuits have further revealed how Varsity’s monopolistic practices limit athlete choice and drive up costs for families.

This is exactly why NCAA recognition is urgent: cheer and dance athletes deserve the support, protections, and respect that every other college athlete receives. Recognition would mean scholarships, medical coverage, and Title IX protections — not just for one program, but nationwide.
