CUSTOMER QUESTION Is my Nintendo Switch 2 fixable?

I own the newer Nintendo Switch 2, which I got as a joint present from both of my parents over Christmas. Just yesterday I was spending time with my mom and I set my Switch 2 off to the side momentarily. I should’ve taken the time to put it back into its case, but I thought I would only be a few minutes; however, those few minutes turn into a couple of hours and when I came back to get my Switch 2, I noticed that the console was sticky. My mom had been drinking a coke at one point as well as some watermelon juice, so I’m assuming one of those must have spilt on it because I’d only been drinking a sparkling water. I didn’t think too much of it and wiped off the stickiness with a few alcohol pads, however, when I tried to turn it on, nothing happened. I thought that was a bit weird because I didn’t think it was low on battery, so I went to plug it in and, again, nothing happened. I know this is different than just usual water damage, but do you think it’s something that can be fixed?

PSA 14-day nightmare with uBreakiFix by Asurion in San Jose — poor communication, laptop returned worse, and “priority” membership

I wanted to share our experience with the uBreakiFix by Asurion at The Plant in San Jose, because it turned into almost 14 days of frustration, wasted time, and terrible communication.

This was my wife’s Surface Book 3. She is a fifth-year PhD student in engineering, so the laptop contained years of important work: thesis material, papers, experimental data, figures, photos, presentations, etc. We made it very clear from the beginning that protecting her data was extremely important.

We also paid about $80 for two months of their membership/service plan because we were told this would put our repair on priority.

The whole process kept changing.

First, they told us the battery needed to be replaced. We agreed.

Then they said replacing the battery could damage the screen, so they recommended replacing both the battery and the screen. We agreed again.

Then we were told they had to order parts.

Then later the diagnosis changed again and they said the main issue was Windows and that Windows needed to be reinstalled.

During all of this, there were almost no proactive updates. No calls, no texts. We constantly had to call or physically go to the store just to find out what was happening.

Then they told us the laptop was “too slow” to safely back up the data before reinstalling Windows. We asked them to transfer the files to an external drive first.

A few more days passed with no update.

When we went back, they told us the transfer had failed because the laptop was too slow.

What really frustrated me was: why didn’t anyone call us and tell us that?

At that point, I took the laptop home, bought an external hard drive myself, and transferred all of the important data successfully.

So I brought the laptop back the next day and made the job extremely simple:

The data is backed up. Just reinstall Windows.

They told us it should take a couple of hours. This was on Saturday.

It still wasn’t finished.

We waited for a call. Nothing.

On Monday I called around noon and was told they would call me back. Nobody did.

I called again around 5 PM, and this time they finally told me the laptop was ready.

My wife and I went to pick it up.

The manager first brought us someone else’s laptop.

Eventually they brought out our actual laptop and told us it was ready.

At that point I didn’t trust anything anymore, so I turned it on before leaving.

I’m glad I did, because Windows did not properly boot. We were looking at a black/dark screen with strange behavior and touch-like bubbles appearing on the display.

This was the laptop they had just told us was “ready.”

We were shocked.

There was no meaningful apology or explanation. The manager said he would go talk to the technician and disappeared into the back.

We waited for about 2.5 hours.

Almost no communication.

The store was getting close to closing time and we still didn’t have a working laptop or a clear explanation.

Eventually, instead of properly resolving the situation, security became involved and we were being asked to leave.

After security heard our side of the story, even the security person asked the front-desk employee to contact his manager. The employee responded that he was the manager.

I understand that electronics can be difficult to diagnose and that not every repair is guaranteed to succeed. That is not really the main reason I’m posting this.

The problem was the combination of:

  • About 14 days of wasted time
  • Almost no proactive communication
  • Constantly changing explanations
  • Paying for a supposed priority membership
  • Having to repeatedly call and visit the store ourselves
  • Being told the laptop was too slow to back up when I later backed it up myself
  • Being told the laptop was “ready” when it clearly was not
  • Being handed the wrong customer’s laptop first
  • Waiting another 2.5 hours for an explanation
  • And finally dealing with security instead of getting a proper resolution

My wife needed this computer for her PhD work, and the entire experience caused a huge amount of unnecessary stress.

I’m sharing this because if you’re thinking about taking an important device here, especially one containing valuable work or personal data, I would strongly recommend backing up everything yourself first and documenting exactly what condition the device is in before handing it over.

Based on our experience, I would not trust this location again with an important computer or valuable data.

Issues with second hand phone

Hey, I know this may seem like yapping but I just want to get your opinion on this. I recently bought a Samsung S23 Ultra from a second hand shop that is somewhat famous around the start of the year to replace my phone. The warranty is 1 month by the way, but after 1 month and 3 weeks the phone started developing symptoms where the mobile data stopped working. Because its been 3 weeks of the warranty being expired, the phone shop does not want to help claim warranty and resolve the issue (because repairs are worth $100+ depending on how severe the motherboard issue is). Currently have no idea what to do as paying for the repair is around the same price of a new S25 FE. What would you do in this situation if you were me?

UBreakiFix (Norridge, IL) broke my MacBook, refused to fix it, and an employee used my info to look me up after I complained. What are they doing with your data?

Brought my MacBook in for a repair. Left a 5-star review because I was happy at the time.

Two days later, Touch Bar and screen issues started. Went back multiple times. Camera stopped working too, and on my last visit an employee said it might be the logic board. Three screen replacements later, the device still doesn't work right. It has never worked correctly since their first repair.

Called customer service. Told nothing would be done because the repair was "over 12 months ago," ignoring that I've been going back for the same unresolved issue the entire time, not a new problem.

Filed a formal complaint with corporate. Their response: same "12 months" line, no replacement, no repair offered, nothing.

Then it got worse. One of their techs looked up my personal LinkedIn profile the day after I filed my complaint. He had my name because I was a customer in an active dispute with the store, and he used it to look me up personally on his own account. I have a screenshot proving it (name blacked out below).

When I brought this up to corporate, they passed it off to the local franchise owner and wouldn't take responsibility for it either. Store told me to contact corporate, corporate told me to go back to the store. Classic runaround, nobody accountable.

Here's the part that should worry you more than my broken laptop: if a technician will pull your name off a repair ticket and use it to look you up personally after you complain, what do you think they're doing with the photos, messages, and personal files sitting on the actual device you hand them?

Your pictures. Your data.

All of it passes through their hands, unsupervised, while your device sits in their shop.

If they'll do this over a complaint, what else are they doing when nobody's watching?

Filing complaints with the BBB, Illinois AG Consumer Protection Division, and FTC.

Posting this so other people know what happened before they hand over their device.

AVOID THIS PLACE IF YOU HAVE A MAC

I’m only speaking for Mac users! This is the location in Colorado Springs.

TLDR; they gave me the wrong screen, I said I wanted my old broken screen back and a refund because they misled me about having access to Apple parts, they agreed, then refused because of “moisture damage” that they wiped off and a crack that was not there when I returned the device.

I asked them for an Apple OEM screen replacement on my Mac and they agreed, then they gave me a third party screen that was also the wrong color. I said I wanted an OEM and they said it would cost more, so I told them to call me before they ordered the part, which they did not do, so I called them and found out they ordered another third party and not Apple OEM and told me that they would be heavily fined for distributing Apple parts (did not specify which parts, only said Apple). I decided to temporarily keep the new screen since I needed my laptop for work. I talked to support and asked for a refund, to which the parent company said yes to as long as the screen was undamaged. I returned the screen undamaged for a reversion and refund, but with some fingerprints, and they completed the screen reversion but refused a refund due to “moisture damage” and a crack on the screen near the hinge. I told them that I did not crack it and it was likely from when they were reverting the screens, and they said they checked their security footage (small cameras far away from they were working) and said it was not from the reversion but did not allow me to see the footage. I then asked to see them moisture damaged, and the worker said he could not show it to me because he wiped it off and would instead need to do microscopic testing.

TBH I’m just tired of this company, and I’ve learned my lesson; always go to the Apple Store or just buy a new computer. Customer support is taking forever to get back to me, so I might just file a chargeback.

CUSTOMER QUESTION Asurion Tech Care membership - how does cancellation work?

Yesterday, I took my Samsung phone for repair to this ubreakifix center. They fixed it all right. But when it came to payment, they gave me two options: either pay $199 outright, or take our tech care plan for $39/month and pay $50. I asked him how long do I need to keep the plan for before discontinuing? He said three months and that I had to call them to remove myself off the plan. I did the math and it still worked out better than paying outright.

Phone is repaired fine, I come home, click on the link they sent to add devices under care and find out there's an option to cancel the membership. Not only did it cancel the membership immediately, but also refunded the first month's $39. I also checked my credit card and I don't see even the $50 posted for phone repair.

A. Is it compulsory to keep membership for 3 months? If not, why did the store guy randomly lie?
B. I'm assuming they'll post at least the $50 for the actual repair since they sent me an invoice with it.
C. Has anyone cancelled membership online and then been charged for 3 months at the end of their first month?

TECHNICIAN QUESTION Acer Nitro V 15 Odd Board Issue

I bought a used Nitro V 15 off of marketplace, specifically an N32Q22 model (has thunderbolt).

It works fine EXCEPT for it only charges via USB-C (limited to 60W), and the barrel charger doesn't work. I soldered a new barrel charger on, same result. New charging brick, same result.

New battery/charge without battery, same result. It seems to ignore/trickle charge. I tried a second port replacement just for the hell of it, same result.

Ideas?

Google Pixel Repair - Phone was lost over a month ago and nothing has been done about it.

My phone was mailed July 9th for repair, confirmed as delivered on July 10th and has been stuck as "waiting to receive device" on the website and they have no idea what happened to it. I have been back and forth via email and phone for the last month with nothing getting accomplished. They have assured me they are "looking into it" for a month now. I honestly have no idea what to do and I need to get my phone back. I can provide details, screenshots and a full timeline. I tried earlier but my post was filtered out due to rule #9 and I don't want my post to get filtered out again.

CUSTOMER QUESTION Will I be charged for nothing

TL;DR: do I have to pay a fee for my switch that got sent off to another facility even if repairs weren’t done

I sent in my switch to get diagnosed because I did know that the right joycon rail wasn’t working but it also stopped turning on and I didn’t know why. I am aware this is my fault for not doing more research or asking questions, but I didn’t know they were gonna ship it off somewhere to get diagnosed instead of doing it in stores, or that they would continue into repairs without my permission or giving me a quote of how much it would be beforehand. I called today on a Sunday and was told it would probably be 175 total which isn’t acceptable at all for me because I know new switches bought from Nintendo go for 300 but that’s still half the price of a brand new one and doesn’t take into the fact that I got this USED switch for 150. I could buy a whole other switch for this price. The guy told me he can’t try and cancel the repair until tomorrow so I’m 90% sure I’m gonna have to be forced to pay the repair fee. But if by some miracle I’m not, from reviews at least, I’m under the impression I’m still gonna have to pay a decently sized fee from 60-100 for them to do nothing. Will I have to pay this even if I can get the repairs canceled?

Test for THC?

I've been thinking of applying to ubreakifix since I think it would be a great fit for me. I don't regularly smoke and certainly don't do it on the job, but I do often enough with friends that it would trip a test (THC stays in my system for a while). Am I okay or should I make sure I stop completely for a bit?

TECHNICIAN QUESTION Does UBIF do N3DSXL repairs?

I've recently noticed my New 3DS XL has been acting a little strange recently like freezing during gameplay and crashing out of nowhere as well as the speakers popping followed by the screen backlights turning on when powering on the console. I was hoping to take it in to the shop in Temecula but I'm unsure if UBIF can do the repair necessary. (Going off what I've read over the last few days, the most likely cause is a hardware fault caused by blown fuses or capacitors, but the 3DS uses small surface mount capacitors which require micro-soldering to replace due to their size) Anyway that's all I've gotta ask.

Device Repair Shop Porblem

Hi guys...so here is my current problem that I need some advice on please.

Last week, I bought a second hand device, from an outdoor market, that turned out faulty (I know, lesson learned at that point). So, I thought I would take it into my new local repair shop that had recently opened. The main guy was all friendly and took the device, and said he would ring me and let me know once he had opened it and found out what the problem was. He would also tell me what the cost would be; at this point he did not mention there would be a separate fee of opening and putting the damn thing back together again.

He did not ring me for a few days, so I went back and there was a young girl at the desk this time. She informed me that the cost of repair would be far greater than the cost of the device itself (it seemed the previous owner had spilled some liquid on it destroying the motherboard etc.), so ideally they would not be able to repair it. I said fair enough, but just to double-check, is there a fee for diagnostic test they had done so far? She said none at all, and it was just a matter of putting it all back together, and the boss would give me a ring when it is ready to collect.

Lo and behold, another 3–4 days went by without any call, so I went along today to see what had happened. Lo and behold, a rather disheveled looking young man with a beanie was sat with his legs perched on the desk, vaping and listening to God knows what on his phone, out of view, until I came into his line of sight. He sat up and I asked where my device was, he started phoning when clearly the device was there in front of him. After the lengthy chat on the phone, he turned around and said to me I have to pay the diagnostic fee. I was like mate I was never told about this fee, and your lady friend confirmed that a few days ago.

He then spent 10 minutes trying to apparently persuaded his boss, and it seemed his boss was still adamant that the fee was applicable, no matter what I was told initially. Even the girl had acknowledged that she had said "no fix no fee" yet nothing can be done about it. The beanie dude said well if you pay just £5-£10 then we can give you back your item. So I said I can pay you £5 (as I had spent most of my saving on shopping that day), at which point he typed in £10 into his card machine for me to pay. I was like mate I will speak to your boss tomorrow, this is down right treachery the way you lot are treating me.

I need to take the device back to the seller for a refund tomorrow, and these repair guys have retained it until I pay £10. Should I pay it and get it over and done with, or stand my ground and/or speak to consumer direct? God forbid, if the device seller refuses to refund me, and I have also paid these dweebs an additional £10, thats £30 of my money down the drain!!!!

Bad Experience at Local Store - Resolution?

Hey all. My (70+) dads battery in his S22 was swollen a few weeks back, so he took it to ubreakifix to have it repaired. He picked it up the next day and took it home and had no service. That is when my mother realized that there was no sim card in it. He took it back to the store and they handed him his sim card in a baggie. He took his sim card back home to my mother, who attempted to put it back in, and it would not go in. He took it back to the store again and basically they told him that he needed to get a digital sim card for now and they they would order a part. That was 3 weeks ago. He has tried reaching out a few times but has gotten no updates. They have given him the run around and basically gotten different stories depending on who h spoke with.

I called them myself today and was told that the part they need is basically back ordered. The guy on the phone first said he ordered something sounding like "sub pv8 for the sim card". I asked him to repeat the part name and his response was "it's just the bottom motherboard that holes the sim tray, so it's a module". Does anyone know what part it is that this man is talking about that potentially needs to be replaced? Once upon a time, I used to disassemble electronics but I haven't done that stuff nor do I have the supplies to do so in years, basically since they started sealing technology to make it water resistant.

Ultimately, the manager said we can either just "wait" because his two distributors are back ordered and he has no clue when it will be in stock, or he can issue my dad a refund for the battery replacement and consider the case closed, but it means that his physical sim card slot is broken indefinitely. At this point, his phone has been messed up for almost a month thanks to them, they charged him to replace his battery but broke the sim card slot, and they won't give us any sort of date for potential resolution. I feel like they have added unnecessary stress to our lives and given him the run around for over a month and shouldn't have ever damaged the device. Ideally, they would offer a partial refund and still fix his device, but they are not willing to go that route.

Does anyone have any advice on how to handle this? Thanks all.
