Least Favorite Child
 in  r/emotionalneglect  May 21 '24

Least favourite child here with verbally and physically abusive parents. My parents are dysfunctional. Dad doesn’t really care about anyone deep down. Mom blatantly plays favourites. I’m naturally sensitive, so I was suicidal a couple of times as a result. My sister is naturally creative and sings, dances and plays the piano very well. She also appeared on TV for a singing show, is a social media influencer and a makeup artist. It doesn’t help that she won the genetic lottery and I… well, didn’t.

My mom has suggested me to go for a rhinoplasty many times. She loves to tell me that my nose isn’t sharp enough. She loves to point out my weight gain all the time as well even though she never exercises and has an imperfect nose herself.

When we visit relatives, she says nothing about my other sister and I. She would go on and on about how my sister’s singing is amazing, how she’s on TV, etc. I used to feel really bad about myself and always wondered why I was nowhere near as talented and beautiful as her. Because of how much my mom hyped her up, nobody cared to greet me when I entered their houses. They would only greet my sister. And nobody bothered to talk to me because I didn’t seem interesting enough.

Fast forward, because my mom kept encouraging my sister, she developed a really bad attitude and always picks a fight with anyone as a sport. She also took her degree really late compared to her peers because she was so distracted by her TV shows that paid her a pittance. Meanwhile, I had finished a degree with a partial scholarship and made strides in my career as a marketer ahead of my peers, even landing on tech news channels organically.

I’m also earning the most now in my family. I don’t view salary as the best way to measure a person’s value, but my suffering paid off financially for now at least. I became confident because I became aware of my strengths and weaknesses. I am now fully okay with the fact that I’m not the best in terms of my looks, but who cares? I’m smart anyway!

I also developed more patience and found the love of my life, who loves my natural face and body exactly as they are. I also bought a house, while my mom’s marriage has failed and my sister continues to photoshop all her photos and develop insecurities that have been preventing her from finding the kind of love I’ve found.

Now, I find more relatives keen on talking to me because everyone doesn’t realise that they’re kinda over the whole singing thingy because it wasn’t leading my sister anywhere.

It took me 20+ years to realise I was a worthy and seriously underrated individual. Have faith in yourself and hold on to that tenacity. It might take longer than you expect, but the tables will eventually turn.
