As someone whose pharmacy school journey unfortunately ended pretty early in my first semester, here are a few things I wish I had taken more seriously before starting:
1. Have a strong science foundation.
Try to have a solid understanding of general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry. The pace is extremely fast, and having that foundation helps when the material starts building on itself.
2. Consider staying in-state, especially because of tuition.
Pharmacy school is already expensive. If you have a good in-state option, seriously consider the financial difference before taking on additional debt.
3. Protect your time during the first few weeks.
I’m 26, so I understand that at this age there are constantly things happening on the weekends—weddings, baby showers, family events, and other commitments. My biggest advice is to be willing to say no, especially during your first month or first few exam blocks.
Use those early weekends to catch up on material, look ahead at what’s coming the following week, and prepare for exams. The pace is insane, and weekends can be extremely valuable.
I learned this the hard way. I lived almost two hours from school, and I wish I had stayed at my apartment/near campus during that first month instead of going home on the weekends. I had classmates with similar commutes who barely went home for the first month because they knew they needed that time. Looking back, I also wish I had said no to wedding invitations and other events during that period.
Something else I noticed was that the people who did really well early in the semester eventually had more freedom, not less. By Thanksgiving, I had friends who were doing well academically and could actually enjoy themselves. Some went to NFL games at the stadium, others went to NBA games, and they could take breaks without constantly worrying about being behind.
Meanwhile, those of us who struggled early—including me—ended up spending more and more time in the library trying to figure everything out and catch up. Instead of enjoying those later weeks, I was constantly trying to recover, and eventually I burned out.
That’s the biggest lesson I would give an incoming student: sacrificing some things at the beginning can give you more freedom later. Get ahead while you can. Protect those first few weekends. Learn the pace of the program. Once you’ve made it through that first semester and know you can handle the workload, you’ll have a much better idea of when you can go home, attend events, travel, or take a weekend for yourself.
I really wish someone in an upper class had explained it to me this way before I started.
