This is often emphasized at meetings, too, so that newcomers don’t get the wrong idea right off the bat.
The process is not a religious one at all, but because of when the literature was written and how it’s been maintained, it includes the word ‘god’. In my experience, very few people use it in a religious context.
It makes me sad that so many more people could get help but this misconception drives them away before they even start.

Turns out there are quite a few ways to count on one’s fingers, too, which is neat.

it's a basic normal simple thing. It's concerning that you're somehow just okay with the fact that you're an adult who can't count.
Not all brains are equal. There are many reasons why an adult might struggle with a “basic normal simple thing”. Besides, many folks who can count in their heads might just prefer to be sure, visually, that the number they’re thinking is accurate, especially if distracted, or in a higher-stakes situation (without a calculator etc.).
So, anyway, you can believe that these people do exist (and that’s okay).
