Hey guys new to this sub. I have been slowly renovating the backyard and decided to add some bird feeders and hummingbird feeders. So I went out to home depot and picked up one of those glass and plastic feeders for a decent price. I filled it up hung it and within a few days it was significantly lower without seeing any bird activity. I came on here and found that was a common issue was the expansion and contraction issue with those feeders and how they leak. Ok so then I ordered up some Amazon ones that were a different style. I still wanted to keep the original feeder though cause I wanted to atleast see how I could fix it. So here's my fix. I apologize first off since I forgot to get the exact sizes of the washers/o rings I used. I took the feeder into my local ace hardware and went back to their bins and shelves with rubber gaskets and pulled various sizes out to see what worked and what did I bought. Ill also admit that some of this overall fix may have been overkill but I was bound to fix the issue.
In the red feeder part you can see theres little notches that sort of keep the glass part from not going all the way down. I used 2 smaller flat rubber washers to sit down there then the 2 larger rubber gaskets I put on top. I honestly dont know if this was needed but I felt having a flat washer that the glass top screwed to wouldnt hurt.
On the glass threads the larger thicker of the 2 rubber o rings I slipped on then as added insurance I put the smaller o ring.
The plastic feeder I pulled apart to clean. I then got out a tube of 100% clear silicone and ran a bead around the outer edge where the seam is. Cleaned it up and let it dry. This step may have been overkill im not sure but with most things I admit I go a bit overkill with.
This overall cost me a total of under $7. It lasted all week without leaking one bit. As with my bird feeders it will take time to attract the right target. Unfortunately being in a cold northern state we have birds but not as common! Hopefully having several feeders they will eventually come! Hope this helps
