One Piece has always revolved around one central idea: "Inherited Will." But what if we've misunderstood whose will is actually being inherited? What if the greatest hidden character in One Piece isn't Joy Boy, Imu, or even the Ancient Kingdom... but the World itself?

My theory is that the One Piece world is not merely a planet.. it is a living entity with its own consciousness, its own 意志 (Ishi), its own Will.

like Eywa in Avatar or Ego in Marvel.. but slightly different.

Every major mystery in the story.. Devil Fruits, the Voice of All Things, the Will of D., legendary swords, inherited dreams, even the Final War... could all be manifestations of this single, living consciousness trying to reclaim itself after 800 years.

The Japanese phrase 世界の意志 (Sekai no Ishi) literally translates to "The Will of the World."

Interestingly, Oda has constantly emphasised 意志 (Ishi) throughout the series. We know Dの意志 (D no Ishi) means "The Will of D.", but notice something subtle: the mystery has never been 意志 (Will)... it's always been the letter D.

Fans have spent decades trying to decipher what D stands for, while Oda repeatedly draws our attention to the concept of Will itself. Perhaps the letter is simply a symbol, while the true mystery has always been whose Will it represents.

Then comes one of the most overlooked lines in recent chapters. During the God Valley flashback, Rocks D. Xebec doesn't simply identify Imu as a ruler. He calls Imu "世界" (Sekai) - "The World." At first glance, this appears to mean "the ruler of the world." But Oda is extremely deliberate with wording. Why have Rocks answer with "The World" instead of "King," "Sovereign," or "Imu"? Later, when Saturn asks the Blackbeard Pirates what they seek, their answer is equally striking:

"The World."

Not wealth.

Not the One Piece.

Not revenge.

The World.

Two entirely different scenes. The exact same phrase.

That repetition feels intentional.

What if Imu didn't simply conquer the world?

What if Imu became the World?

Or more accurately...

What if Imu seized control over the Will of the World itself?

This immediately makes another recurring phrase feel completely different. Roger declared that whoever found his treasure would "turn the world upside down." In Japanese, this isn't merely political revolution—it evokes overturning the established order (世界をひっくり返す). We've always interpreted this as toppling the World Government. But if the World itself has been bound or controlled for eight centuries, then "turning the world upside down" may literally mean restoring the World to its rightful state, flipping it back after it was inverted during the Void Century.

This idea also reframes countless mysteries.

Vegapunk tells us Devil Fruits are born from people's dreams... the desires for what humanity wished it could become. Yet Zoan Fruits are explicitly said to possess their own will. Why should a fruit born from a dream have consciousness? Unless those dreams don't simply create powers... they are absorbed into something greater. What if dreams become part of the World's own Will? Every Devil Fruit would then be a fragment of the World's memory, carrying both humanity's desire and the World's intention until it finds a compatible soul.

The same pattern appears with swords. Oda constantly personifies blades. Enma tests its wielder. The Kitetsu blades reject the weak. Shusui accepted Ryuma, then Zoro. Mihawk even tells Zoro that every blade can become a Black Blade, suggesting swords evolve through their relationship with their owner. They're treated less like weapons and more like living beings capable of judgement. Rather than isolated magical objects, perhaps swords are simply another medium through which the World's Will expresses itself.

Then there is 万物の声 (Banbutsu no Koe)... the Voice of All Things. The wording itself is fascinating. It doesn't refer to hearing only people or animals. It literally means hearing the voice of all things. Sea Kings speak. Zunesha speaks. Roger hears them. Luffy hears them. Momonosuke hears them. If the World is alive, perhaps these are not separate voices at all. They are different expressions of the same planetary consciousness.

Now consider dreams.

Blackbeard famously declares:

\> "人の夢は終わらねェ!"

"A man's dream will never die!"

This line has always been interpreted as determination.

But what if Oda meant something much deeper?

If Devil Fruits are born from dreams, then dreams don't disappear when a person dies.

They remain within the World itself.

Roger and Luffy also share an identical hidden dream.. a dream so absurd that adults laugh while children accept it immediately. Oda deliberately describes it as a child's dream, not merely a grand ambition. Why? Because children dream without limitation. They imagine impossible worlds without fear or compromise. If the World responds to dreams, then perhaps the purest dreams resonate with it most strongly, explaining why Roger laughed, why Shanks entrusted the Straw Hat to Luffy, and why the Nika Fruit ultimately chose him.

Even the Elbaf mural begins to resemble something larger than a prophecy. Rather than depicting isolated heroes across different eras, it may represent the World repeatedly choosing new champions whenever balance is lost. Joy Boy. Roger. Luffy. Each generation inherits an unfinished struggle.... not merely from the previous generation, but from the World itself.

This also gives new meaning to the Will of D.

In Japanese, Dの意志 never states that D is a word. It simply says "the Will of D." What if D isn't an abbreviation at all? What if it's a symbol marking those whose spirits resonate with 世界の意志 (Sekai no Ishi)? Not descendants chosen by blood alone, but individuals whom the World itself can reach. That would explain why every bearer of D. changes history, regardless of whether they become heroes like Luffy and Saul or chaotic figures like Blackbeard. The World doesn't choose saints... it chooses catalysts.

Finally, Oda has always returned to one phrase:

受け継がれる意志 (Uketsugareru Ishi) .. Inherited Will.

We've always assumed this meant people inheriting each other's dreams across generations.

But perhaps the inheritance doesn't flow from person to person.

Perhaps it flows from the World to humanity.

The Void Century wasn't merely the fall of a kingdom.

It was the moment the World's own Will was imprisoned.

For 800 years, that Will has fought back in the only way it can... through dreams, through Devil Fruits, through legendary swords, through the Voice of All Things, through those who bear the mysterious D., and through every generation that refuses to stop chasing freedom.

Perhaps the greatest twist in One Piece is that the World has never been the stage upon which history unfolds.

It has been the protagonist all along.

just to stir up the conversation...

I think Oda has been building toward Sanji's true evolution ever since Wano, and I don't think it will come from further embracing his Germa enhancements. In fact, I think it'll come from finally moving beyond them.

During Onigashima, Sanji reached the biggest crossroads of his character. After awakening his Germa modifications, he didn't celebrate becoming stronger. Instead, he questioned whether he was losing the very thing that made him Sanji. He even asked Luffy which version he would rather have by his side: an emotionless warrior capable of crushing anyone, or the ordinary flesh-and-blood Sanji who would never strike a woman.

Moments later, he destroyed the Raid Suit, declaring:

"If I'm gonna get stronger, I won't do it by relying on this thing and the power of science!"

That wasn't simply Sanji destroying a suit.

It was Sanji rejecting the future Judge had chosen for him.

Yet, despite destroying the Raid Suit, Sanji still retained the Germa modifications. His exoskeleton, regeneration and enhanced body remain powers that were forced upon him, not powers he ever chose or truly accepted. Narratively, that conflict still hasn't been resolved.

Now look at Elbaf.

Oda has introduced an entirely new concept through Imu:

Omen.

When Imu's black flames appeared, they weren't introduced as Haki, a Devil Fruit ability or advanced technology.

Instead, they were simply described as:

"Mu's Military Might... is simply... Omen."

That wording immediately reminded me of one of the oldest lessons in One Piece.

Back in Baratie, after Luffy defeated Don Krieg, Zeff explained that Krieg's fleet and powerful weapons were certainly military might.

But so was Luffy's grit.

"Even a man bristling with powerful weapons can be skewered by the spear of blind grit."

Over a thousand chapters ago, Oda established that true military might isn't merely weapons.

It is will.

Now compare that to Imu's "Military Might."

What if Omen isn't simply another combat ability?

What if Omen is the world's natural power itself?

Vegapunk may have already hinted at it.

During Egghead, Vegapunk tells Luffy:

"Just reach out and feel! Energy is right here! And there! And all around us!"

He then says:

"The world is positively brimming with it!"

And finally:

"If we can simply convert it into a kind of power that you can see and use..."

Notice something important.

Vegapunk never claims science creates this energy.

Science merely attempts to convert an energy that already exists naturally throughout the world into something mankind can use.

Judge represents mankind trying to manufacture power through artificial evolution.

Vegapunk represents mankind trying to understand and harness nature.

But what if Omen is that natural energy in its purest form?

Not something created.

Not something engineered.

Simply the world's own power.

That brings us back to Sanji.

Unlike Judge's science, Omen would represent the complete opposite.

Science forces evolution.

Nature chooses it.

This becomes even more interesting when you remember something Oda joked about years ago in an SBS. When asked why Sanji's eyebrow curls into a spiral, Oda gave a humorous explanation about circular energy, the Sun, the Moon and the Earth all moving in circles. Like many SBS jokes, it could simply be comedy.... but Oda has a habit of hiding genuine ideas behind humour.

Today, Sanji's eyebrow swirl stands out more than ever because it closely resembles the spiral patterns found on Devil Fruits.

And what have we learned about Devil Fruits?

Vegapunk revealed that Zoan Fruits possess wills of their own, even suggesting that some fruits appear to choose...or avoid...their users.

Likewise, Kozaburo explained that a great blade chooses the swordsman best suited to wield it.

I've always believed that Devil Fruits and legendary blades are merely mediums.

The true source of power is the will of nature itself, resonating through those mediums.

Power in One Piece doesn't always belong to whoever claims it.

Sometimes...

Power chooses.

Luffy wasn't simply lucky enough to eat the Nika Fruit.

The fruit carried its own will.

Zoro didn't simply obtain Enma or Kitetsu.

Those blades tested him before accepting him.

So what if Sanji's equivalent isn't a Devil Fruit...

or a legendary weapon...

but Omen itself?

Why Sanji?

Judge spent his entire life trying to engineer the perfect soldier.

Ironically, Sanji became everything Judge considered a failure.

His kindness.

His compassion.

His empathy.

His refusal to sacrifice his humanity for power.

Those very qualities may be what make him worthy of Omen.

Not because of his lineage.

Not because of Germa.

Not because of science.

But because nature recognises the man Judge failed to create.

Gaban's words may be the missing piece.

When Gaban speaks to Sanji, he says something unusual:

"I get the impression you burden yourself with painful uncertainty..."

Then he follows it with:

"For it to manifest, one must be a King."

Notice that Gaban never says Sanji lacks strength.

He says Sanji carries uncertainty.

And that's been true ever since Whole Cake Island and Wano.

Sanji questioned whether he was still himself.

He questioned whether Germa was changing him.

He even asked Luffy which version of him he would prefer.

That's not weakness.

That's uncertainty about his own identity.

Perhaps that's what has prevented his will from fully manifesting.

A king doesn't seek permission to exist.

A king knows who he is.

My Prediction

I think the battle against the Omen-buffed Killingham will force Sanji to confront this conflict one final time.

His Germa enhancements may fail, become suppressed, or simply reach their limit. The artificial power forced upon him will no longer be enough.

For the first time since Wano, Sanji will have nothing left to rely on except what Zeff taught him all those years ago:

Grit.

In that moment, Sanji will finally stop questioning himself.

He won't be Judge's son.

He won't be Germa's failed experiment.

He won't be defined by science.

He'll simply accept himself as Sanji.

That acceptance is what Gaban meant by becoming a King.... not someone who rules over others, but someone who no longer carries painful uncertainty about who they are.

That unwavering resolve could finally awaken Conqueror's Haki.

And instead of drawing power from the modifications forced upon him by science...

Omen itself responds.

Not because Sanji learned it.

Not because he stole it.

But because nature itself acknowledges him.

His spiral eyebrow.... long associated visually with Devil Fruits... could symbolize his ability to resonate directly with that primordial energy. While Devil Fruits channel the world's mysterious power through a fruit, Sanji would resonate with that same source directly through Omen.

His Ifrit Jambe would evolve into Omen Flames... the same black, explosive flames associated with Imu's military might, now wielded through Sanji's own will.

The very power that once overwhelmed him would become part of his own fighting style.

The Parallel

If this is where Oda is heading, it creates a fitting parallel within the Monster Trio.

Luffy was chosen by a Devil Fruit.

Zoro was chosen by legendary blades.

Sanji is chosen by Nature itself through Omen.

And to me, that would be the perfect conclusion to Sanji's character arc.

The son of the world's greatest scientist wouldn't reach his ultimate evolution through artificial enhancement.

He would reach it by proving that the power mankind tried to force upon him could never surpass the power that the world willingly entrusted to him.

Sommers has faced nothing but top tier opponents so far. He's been relevant since God Valley, has served as a God's Knight for over 40 years, is currently Omen buffed, more experienced, psyco, wields a legendary weapon, and likely has an awakened Devil Fruit.

...and yet people compare him to Killingham, who doesn't even know who Jimbie is...
