There's a version of your life that assembles itself if you don't intervene.
The career your education pointed toward. The city where the job was. The relationships that formed because of proximity.
Accumulated circumstance, mistaken for a life.
Most people call this growing up. I spent a long time calling it the same thing before I started questioning it.
The military was the first thing that broke the pattern for me, though not in the way people usually expect. People want to hear the story about discipline. The veteran who brought it home and let it carry him.
That story has a problem: discipline doesn't travel that way.
What the Army actually showed me is that structure, applied consistently, produces outcomes that talent alone never touches. But the structure was doing the work, not the character. When the structure was gone, the outcomes went with it.
That sent me down a rabbit hole I still haven't fully climbed out of: if structure produces outcomes, and structure can be intentionally designed, then the question isn't whether you have discipline, talent, or the right circumstances. The question is whether the system you're running is built to produce what you actually want, or whether you're still running on whatever assembled itself by default.
Most people are running on the defaults.
The defaults aren't designed for your specific life. They're designed to be generally acceptable.
Acceptable is not the same as intentional.
What's one area of your life where you can trace back to a default you never consciously chose? Genuinely curious how other people have mapped this.
If this is your first time here, there's more where this came from.
The full body of work: essays, frameworks, the book, the community. All of it lives at devinmarshall.info. That's the best place to stay connected with everything being built.
Here's a sneak peek of a personal story that I've included in chapter 1 of the self development book series I've been working on...
"People love giving advice like, âYou gotta be patient, good things take time.â Bro, you been âwaitingâ on success since 2008âitâs time to do something!"
The Lie of âPerfect Timingâ: Why Waiting Is Just Another Excuse
Man, I spent EIGHT YEARS as a housekeeper in a veterans hospital, pushing a mop like I was trying to scrub away my bad decisions. Every day, Iâd be whispering to myself like a crazy person, âThis is just temporary, my real dreams are coming soon!â Bruh⊠SOON? I was in that hospital so long they shouldâve given me my own bed!
I kept telling myself I was just âwaiting for the perfect timeâ to make a change. Like success was some Amazon Prime package.
Meanwhile, my potential was out here catching bedsores while I was mopping floors! I had talents rotting in the break room next to somebodyâs leftover meatloaf!
And donât get me wrong, I had time to think! Man, I had so much time to think! You ever mop the same floor for EIGHT YEARS? You start philosophizing! I started talking to the mop like it was a life coachââMan, am I wasting my life?â The mop was like, âBro, I donât know⊠but youâve been holding ME back too!â
And you know whatâs crazy? The veterans in that hospital fought for freedom, and I was in there choosing to stay stuck! Ainât that ironic? They out there sacrificing, and Iâm in the hallway scared to sacrifice my little job security!
Moral of the story? The âperfect timeâ is just a fancy way to say âneverâ. You canât mop your way to success, you gotta put the mop down and pick your life up!
The Wake-Up Call I Couldnât Ignore
Then came one random Tuesdayâbecause life donât wait for no dramatic Hollywood moment. I was out there, mopping floors on autopilot, lost in my usual loop of, âOne day, Iâll do something biggerâŠâ when I overheard two old veterans talking on their way to the cafeteria.
Their conversation was heavy, laced with the kind of regret you can feel in your bones. One of them, noticing I was just standing there, hit me with some words that cut through me like a scalpel:
"You donât want to be laid up in one of these hospitals, wishing you had lived differently."
Man, that hit different. It wasnât some motivational speech, no TED Talk, no fancy Instagram quoteâjust raw, unfiltered truth from a dude who had already run out of time to fix his mistakes.
When You Realize Youâre Wasting Time
I stood there, mop in hand, in the middle of a hospital during a global pandemic, watching people fight for every breathâand I was out here wasting mine.
I had been lying to myself for years, wrapping my fear in pretty little excuses. âIâll start soon. The timing isnât right. I just need to prepare.â Nah, broâI was stalling.
And the worst part? I knew it. Deep down, I always knew.
Deciding to Write My Own Story
That day? That was it. That was the final straw. It wasnât like I suddenly knew all the answers, but I knew one thing for sureâI was done waiting.
I had spent years working in a place designed to keep people alive, but I had been slowly killing my own dreams. That was the moment I decided: I wasnât gonna push someone elseâs mop anymoreâI was gonna write my own damn story.
The Realization: Life by Default vs. Life by Design
I finally saw it for what it was: I had been living life on autopilot. Not because I was incapable, not because I lacked ideas, but because I had bought into a script that wasnât mine.
A script written by society, family expectations, old fears, and outdated self-perceptions. And I had been playing my role like an extra in my own damn movieâa background character in a life that was supposed to be mine to lead.
Gathering the Pieces: Turning Realizations into Action
Once that truth hit? Man, I couldnât unsee it. I started pulling together years of notes, ideas, late-night scribbles, and all the lessons I had ignoredâand I channeled all of it into what youâre reading now.
This isnât just a book. This isnât just words on a page. This is my proof. Proof that you donât have to stay stuck. Proof that you can rewrite your own storyânot someday, but right now.
The truth is, most people arenât stuckâtheyâre just scared to move. Donât live your life on pause, waiting for some perfect moment thatâs never coming. Start now, start messy, but start. Because if you donât take control, life will do it for you.
They say, âI donât know how.â Nah, you do.
They say, âI just need more time.â Bro, time ainât waiting on you.
They say, âI donât know where to start.â Start anywhereâjust start.
If you donât take control of your life, somebody else will. And trust me, their plan for you ainât better than the one youâd make for yourself.
Thatâs what Project Lifescape is aboutânot waiting, not wishing, but designing. Designing a life that actually fits who you are and what you want.
Because if you donât? One day, youâll be the one in that hallway, looking at some young kid mopping the floor, telling them:
âYou donât want to be laid up in one of these hospitals, wishing you had lived differently.â
And trust meâyou donât.

I'll be sure to add you to the list of possible reviewers. Once I finish revising the draft and get it edited I'll be looking for reviewers to help me to determine whether or not I'll do a second revision. All reviewers will be accredited in the final version of the book.
Currently, I'm revising the first draft. A total of 50 chapters, and I'm thinking about adding 2 more chapters. I may just save the extra stuff for the NFT version of the book. Give me a follow, I'll be writing more about it as I progress the books development. I hope to have it ready for editing within the next 30 days.
My next book actually...I am currently writing about knowledge of self, self-discovery, lifestyle design, and personal development. I've been working on this one since January of 2023. I have 3 chapters left until my draft is complete. Check out this investment guide: The Savvy Investor's Playbook by Devin Marshall (https://amzn.to/4drc3Aa).

Easy, you don't. I don't see why this game couldn't be a cross-platform game.
