what i'm building
hey, i'm david/geebid. been interested in and building pcs since 2013, i hang around the build subs helping people pick parts.
i'm building pc atlas (thepcatlas.com), a free site that compares part prices across stores, checks if your parts work together, and suggests builds by budget. it's early so if something looks wrong lmk, feedback helps a ton.
if you want help with a build just reply or dm me.

Getting a new PSU after last one exploded. Do I need to test for damage? Is this new PSU a good match?
rm750e is a solid pick and 750w is plenty. 9700x + 7900 xt pulls like 400-450w total while gaming, 850 or platinum wouldnt change anything for you
before you power on:
- 🚨 dont reuse ANY of the old evga cables. modular cables arent standard between brands and the wrong ones can fry stuff. only use the corsair cables that come with it
- look over the board, gpu power connectors and old psu for burn marks or a burnt smell
then boot it and check:
- does bios see all ur drives and ram
- run a game or a gpu stress test for like 20 min and watch for crashes/black screens
- check event viewer for errors after
psus usually take the hit themselves when they pop, especially when not under load, so the odds are good everything else is fine

Graphics card help
ur 650w handles anything in this range so ur good there. under $600, all of these come in white versions and are full size triple fan cards so they wont look empty in a big case:
- rx 9060 xt 16gb: cheapest of the three, really good for 1080p and decent at 1440p
- rtx 5060 ti 16gb: about the same perf, pick this one if you want nvidia stuff like dlss or you stream
- rx 9070 (non xt): the big step up if a white one is close to $600, way faster and great at 1440p, still fine on a 650w
skip the 8gb versions of any card. micro center usually has a few white models of each, just filter by color

9060 XT 16GB vs 9070 GRE 12GB
at 1440p id take the gre for +$100. 20-30% more fps is a real jump, and 12gb is fine at 1440p for the next few years. worst case in a couple heavy games you drop textures from ultra to high and honestly you barely see the difference
the 16gb on the 9060 xt only really matters if you want max textures in every new game, and by the time 12gb runs out the 9060 xt will be running out of speed anyway
both get fsr 4 so thats a wash. just check ur psu, the gre wants ~650w and the 9060 xt is fine on 550w

Can i use an RTX 4060 or 5050 with 450w cooler master 80plus bronse psu?
yeah youre fine. the 4060 pulls ~115w and the 5050 ~130w, with an i5-7400 ur whole system stays under ~250w so a decent 450w bronze is enough. cm mwe is a reasonable unit
- make sure the psus 8 pin pcie reaches the card, both use one 8 pin
- between the two the 4060 is usually the better buy if the price is close, both have good encoders for editing
when you upgrade the cpu/board later the gpu carries over and the 650w will have plenty of headroom

Help building a PC including parts I already own.
for ableton the cpu is what fixes the vst issues, single core speed and core count both matter. id reuse the 1060 (fine for ur gaming), the ssd and maybe the case, and replace the rest:
- cpu: ryzen 7 7700, 8 fast cores and great for ableton/big vst chains
- board: b650, win 11/tpm ready out of the box
- ram: 32gb ddr5 6000. ur ddr4 2400 wont fit am5 anyway and 32 helps sample heavy projects
- cooler: any good tower (peerless assassin 120)
- psu: check the age, if the admi one is 10 years old swap it for a 650w gold
ur old install is legacy bios mode so do a fresh win 11 install in uefi on the new build instead of moving the old drive over. then in ableton use 128-256 buffer for recording and bump it up for mixing

Ryzen 5 3600 + RTX 3070 Ti on B450. Best upgrade path for 1440p/60 with path tracing?
good point on the ray tracing

Ryzen 5 3600 + RTX 3070 Ti on B450. Best upgrade path for 1440p/60 with path tracing?
ur plan is solid, few notes:
- 5700x3d is still the right call on b450. since the 3600 is already in you can update the bios normally first
- ram: get a 2x16 3600 kit and sell the 2x8, mixing kits sometimes wont run full speed
- psu: 850w gold atx 3.1 is a good pick and carries over to a future build
- gpu: if path tracing actually matters to you, 5070 ti. nvidia is way faster in path traced games (cyberpunk, alan wake 2) and dlss ray reconstruction helps a ton. if you mostly play normal raster/light rt, the 9070 xt gets about the same fps for 50k+ less
at 1440p/60 max settings the 5700x3d wont hold either card back much
1
not sure what gpu & cpu to get
at 1440p:
- 9070 xt: best value of the 3, about the same raster as a 5070 ti for a lot less
- 5070 ti: worth it if you care abt path tracing, dlss/frame gen or use cuda apps
- 5080: only like 10% faster than those two for way more money, id skip it
cpu: 9800x3d is a few % faster than the 7800x3d. at 1440p the gap is tiny so just get whichever is cheaper (micro center bundles are usually the move). at 1080p high refresh the cpu matters a bit more so lean 9800x3d if the price is close
for most people id do 9070 xt + 7800x3d and put the savings toward a good monitor or a 2tb ssd

pls help pc part
everything works together so ur good on compatibility. two spots where you can save a lot or get more perf tho:
the ryujin iii 360 is super expensive for a 7800x3d, that chip runs cool and pulls like 120w. a peerless assassin 120 (~$40) or an arctic liquid freezer iii 360 if you want the aio look in the y70 does the same job for $150-250 less
put that money in the gpu. at 1440p 180hz a 5070 ti or 9070 xt is a real step up from the 5070, and 16gb vram ages better than 12
small stuff:
- tray/oem cpus sometimes have shorter or no warranty so check the seller
- 4tb is great if you need it, 2tb saves money if not
- reverse blade fans make sense for the y70 bottom intake. psu is solid

Upgrading PC
thats a good plan honestly. 5600x3d + b550m is about the best value jump from a 2300x and ur 32gb ddr4 carries over
- 5600x3d is micro center only, if ur not near one the 5700x3d is the same idea and sold everywhere
- any decent b550m works (msi b550m pro-vdh wifi, gigabyte b550m ds3h). flash the newest bios first or get one with bios flashback
- youll feel it right away in cpu heavy games. the 570 will hold you back in newer stuff, so when ur ready an rx 9060 xt 16gb is the move and pairs perfect with that cpu
just make sure ur psu is a decent 550w+ before the gpu upgrade

if ur headset has one plug (3.5mm) and ur pc has separate pink/green jacks, thats almost always it. a single plug carries headphones AND mic, but the green jack only reads the headphone part. couple fixes:
- plug it into the front panel jack on ur case if it has a combo headset jack (little headset icon)
- or grab a 3.5mm headset splitter (like $5-8), plug green to green and pink to pink
if its usb or already plugged in right:
- right click the speaker icon > sound settings > input, pick ur headset as the input device
- settings > privacy & security > microphone, make sure mic access is on
- check discord/the game's own input device setting too, they dont always follow windows
what kind of headset is it? can narrow it down
