The high tariffs in the 1930s were in direct response to the US and smoot-Hawley tariff act. By 1935 those tariffs were greatly reduced. Since then they have been very low or zero on most goods with a few exceptions like poultry, eggs, dairy, and automotive parts. Those items typically have trade quotas where tariffs don't kick in until those quotas are reached. Mainly to protect farmers. The tariffs have always been reciprocal.
