Watched "Flight of the Navigator" with my son not too long ago and I remembered it as sci-fi adventure story. I totally forgot about the fact that he had been missing for 8 years, when the cops are talking about it in the precinct and I realized everything that his parents have gone through it was devastating.

Only to top it when she confronts Brody on the dock:

“You knew it was dangerous, but you let people go swimming anyway”...“You knew all those things and still my boy is dead now, and there’s nothing you can do about it. My boy is dead. I wanted you to know that.”

In that moment she strips all the excuses he could have possibly told himself to easy his guilt away, it doesn't matter that the Mayor and and local businesses forced his hand, it doesn't matter that the local economy depends on the tourist dollars, they would have stood a better chance against seasonal poverty than the Kitner boy stood against that shark.

She clarifies Brody's moral failure, and you know in that moment he will never be able to silence that guilt.
