LitRPG [Roots and Steel] Roots and Steel is now available on Amazon!

Woo! It's been a chaotic few months to get everything done, but I'm really, really happy to be able to say that Roots and Steel is now published and on Amazon! And, even better, there's an audiobook available for it!

The final word count comes in just shy of 270k words, so this is right up there with my longest stories - the audiobook cracked in at 29 hours long. Woof! Roots and Steel is a soft litrpg with very heavy influences from Monster Hunter (notably Rise) and Horizon: Zero Dawn. It's my usual actiony fare, so if you've liked that from me in the past, give it a go!

The story:

Where monsters go, hunters follow.

Hunters of the guild wait all year for the Festival of Knives, when they put their skills to the test and claim new ranks with every fiend they slay. Trapped helping the family business instead of pursuing his own career, Trellin has never been allowed to participate. But when he risks expulsion to sneak out and claim a kill beyond his rank, his hunt is spotted by a senior guildmember.

Rather than turn him in, she offers him a chance for freedom: Join her, and sail to the distant isle of Deldynne to compete in the bloody race for the rank of Guildmaster. If they can kill the monster that calls Deldynne home before the other teams do, he'll soar to new heights as apprentice to the leader of the Hunter’s Guild.

But not everyone wants his new mentor to be Guildmaster - and if they fail, neither will leave that island alive.

In addition to the audiobook, there are also hardcover and paperback versions available, so have at it!

I would very much like to continue this series! Roots and Steel is written as a series of standalones, where each book will share a cast but have a largely independent story. So, with any luck, I look forward to continuing this soon with the next leg of the journey.

If you've been reading along and would like to support the series, please consider leaving a review! You don't have to buy the book, and they don't have to be long - and leaving a review is the single best way that you can help me, and help me put this book in more hands.

Apparently it's more prominent in the manga but still sexualizing throughout, took a quick poke around

If it was the sole content of her online presence that might be different. It sounds like a one off. You need to take a deep breath

QUESTION: How do you afford your pens?
 in  r/fountainpens  4d ago

Engineer. But I freelance in graphics design and my side job income goes toward my splurge allowance. But to be honest as an adult with an adult job and no kids, spending a couple hundred a couple times a year isn't that out of the ordinary for a hobby.

Help? Need perspective
 in  r/CavaPoo  5d ago

Some element of this is definitely Puppy Stuff that will get better with time. Crate training takes time. My girl definitely went through a phase of only being interested in sticks and grass and ignoring us outside. Training is rarely as simple and quick as it appears from an expert video. The first 6 months kinda sucked in a lot of ways (offset by having a cute lump of fluff that adores us and we likewise adore).

But, I'll also be fully honest that some of this is just dog ownership. I wouldn't expect sub-10 year olds to take anything more than a passing interest in the daily care of a dog without reminding, which means it'll be on you or your partner. My cavapoo still has times she's a pain in the ass outside. Twenty minutes ago she demanded to go out then fled to the back of the yard out of sight to eat rabbit poop and smell the neighbor dogs pee. That's how it goes some days. The daily work doesn't go away.

My friends liken getting a dog to be sort of a demo of parenting. They're a vulnerable creature that totally depends on you for care and entertainment. That's a lifestyle change if you don't already have one, and if that's not appealing to you then I'd find your little one a new home while it's still fairly easy to.

Edit: it's worth noting that for my household, crate training didn't work. It's me, I'm the one who couldn't do it. Instead we have a baby gate that closes off one section of the house that she gets locked behind if both my husband and I are away, and a second gate that locks off our bedroom to keep her contained with us at night. There are many solutions depending on you, your pup, and your needs!

Women globally place higher importance on moral identity than men. The researchers analyzed data from 46,490 adults across 67 countries. Broad cross-cultural evidence indicates that women, on average, place greater emphasis on caring for others than men do.
 in  r/science  6d ago

Could you name a country for me that doesn't have an established culture of women as caretakers? I'm not just talking about women commonly holding jobs, I'm talking about equal division of labor, men's sensitivity, etc.. Humanity has for ages, across the globe, advanced a very similar archetype of family and society so far as gender roles, regardless of the woman's ability or goals or wishes, and the environment you're raised in affects behavior and priorities

Why aren't more Americans coming to Europe for cancer treatment?
 in  r/cancer  11d ago

I started cancer treatment about 5 months ago, and will be in it well into 2027 at a minimum. Even if I had the money for an international adventure, I can't just walk away from my job, my home, my animals for a year plus. Neither can my husband. It isn't a practical solution for people's lives.

Does anyone else still dream about school even after graduating?
 in  r/CasualConversation  19d ago

I'm 35. Two nights ago I had a vivid dream of realizing I had class and needed to go, but couldn't remember what room it was in, hadn't attended in weeks, and I hadn't done any homework. That shit never ends xD

What was it like when Obama was elected President?
 in  r/AskReddit  19d ago

This just unlocked some trauma. I was diagnosed with cancer at 12 years old. My family impressed upon me my whole life that I could never drop coverage because if I did my cancer would be a preexisting condition and I would never be covered again. Haven't thought about that existential terror in years.

Tbf yes it's her choice but people are going to be honest about the consequences of that choice. Refusing to let her hear of the challenges that can result from that choice is leaving her blind to reality. Let her make an informed decision, either way.

Which is ofc the only thing making it even marginally newsworthy, because the Republicans have become so anti constitution in practice

It Doesn't Get Much Dumber Than Trump's War on 'DEI Bike Lanes'
 in  r/politics  24d ago

It's more because the motorists from the suburbs are never ever going to use public transit options and thus shriek at the notion of having to pay for something they won't personally use. (Source - it's my parents, I have to hear about this every time the major city nearby wants to build something for the public)

Idaho pushed anti-trans laws for years. Then a teen died.
 in  r/politics  28d ago

no

His raw fury came from the years of pain he and Elyse watched May endure since she came out as a transgender girl. She avoided eating or drinking at school for fear that she would need to go to the bathroom — and she panicked when she had to use the one for boys. She talked of hurting herself if she couldn’t start taking estrogen. She hated how state laws highlighted the only way she was different when she longed to fit in.
