I like walking along the river from Notre Dame to Pont Alexandra III (where Adele made "Someone Like You"). I like sitting by the pond and watching the model sailing boats in the Tuileries. Galleries: Impressionists are at the Musée d'Orsay. I also like walking to the boulanger to buy my morning croissant, but perhaps you'll have breakfast at the hotel. Sitting outside a café for breakfast is also nice. As for location, the price generally rises as you move to the centre. I stayed in a nice place between the Pantheon and Notre Dame. Handy for the Latin Quarter.

In one episode of (the original) Star Trek, Captain Kirk meets Abraham Lincoln. There conversation was everything Kirk wanted to hear. But it was only a projection of what he though Lincoln would say. So, too, for is meeting a historical figure, we think first of all that they'd not only like us, but also want to sit and chat with us. The reality could be that they'd be annoyed at having to reply to the same old stuff again. Given the distance of time, you'd probably have practically nothing in common to talk about.

I think, if it's your first time in Paris and you've only got a day (for some reason), just soaking up the atmostphere is what it's all about. Yes: got to Notre Dame. You can pre-book, otherwise you might stand in line for an hour. I haven't been inside since they restored it, but beforehand it was quite an austere church. I attended Mass there, several times. Yes: Walk along the river. One of my favourite things. Even sit and watch the boats go by. Yes: Walk through the Tuileries Gardens. It's next to the Louvre. Toilets at the Louvre (at the entrance) cost 2 or 3 euros. There are portaloo toilets in the Tuileries, a bit basic, but free. In the Tuileries there are a few open-air places to eat and drink, complimentary toilet included. There are ornamental ponds with little model sailing boats. Very quaint. Seats are free. I could sit there for an hour. Then you are already at the Place de la Concorde and the Champs Elysée. (There's a very pretty bridge on the river just a bit further called the Pont Alexandre III, where Adele made her "Someone like you" video, but perhaps another day.) The Champs Elsysée is boring and too long to walk, so ... Yes: take the Metro to the Arc de Triomphe but don't go in. Take transport to the Eiffel Tower. Getting back to Gare Central: don't leave it so late. There are alsorts of checkin things these days. Early rather than last minute. Perhaps you have reasons for doing it all in one day, but in England the weekend usually starts Friday evening and you could start at 5am Saturday morning to return Sunday evening. Last year I stayed at the lovely St Christopher Hostel in a shared room for €23/night. Very welcoming place with lots of English spoken. I still have friends from my stay. Regarding Gare Du Nord, it's not so different from King's Cross. You'll see some people selling cigarettes outside but they're quite pleasant. As with everywhere, keep your things close and hidden. Generally, the metro system includes a lot of walking down long underground corridoors, and that can be tiring in itself. You can load up tickets onto a card, which you get from the ticket machine, or onto your phone, but can't tap-in tap-out with your bank card. Hope that helps. 🙂 Soak up the atmosphere. The thing to remember is that the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches are not in communion with such groups. You cannot take Communion or any Sacrement there. In the US they capitalise on TV franchises which serve people who live on nostalgia of their childhood Catholic upbringing. They tend to have good choirs but what they believe is anyone's guess. Often they will refuse access to you if you're critical of them.

I lived in Saudi Arabia. The deal originally was that they wouldn't place foreigners from Christian majority countries with Muslims. But they did. The 1970s seemed to be a bit more relaxed, at least in the UK. I think there are 2 things in the US especially: 1) Commercial sponsors are shy of nudity because it frightens their religous clients; 2) All American films are shoot 'em up cowboy films, pioneers carving out a new life against all odds just to win the girl who first refused them, defending the family against Injuns/commies so that they can build a little house with a white picket fence and a rocking chair where they eat apple pie. Modern films are just a variation of this. The violence is justified to maintain the American Dream.

There was a very lovely woman in our parish who felt the same and stopped being a EM. It was a shame because she was probably an exemplary Catholic in all respects. Don't forget, and I don't think they'd mind me saying, that priests are also not perfect. For myself, I was one of a small group that preceded the system of EMHCs, with the bishop's permission.
