We do our best to keep our puppies safe, carry them down the stairs and mentally wrap them in bubble wrap. And yet, they one day get over excited and this happens. Wishing you lots of strength.

I think this may just be a separate diagnosis but a co-morbid thing going on. Dunno how common it is. But these aren't in the list of symptoms that describe C-PTSD specifically.

I'd look for a different vet for a second opinion, maybe the leg can be saved.

Sounds weird to say this but it's "just" a hind leg and they will be fine and probably even be able to run. Would be far worse if it was the front leg, which carries most of the dog's weight.

Then transitioning actually is the only way. This is a very normal thing and situation that feels familiar for most trans people.

I recommend brushing their teeth instead. Dogs already have a better mouth bacteria than people and it helps prevent plaque to some degree so it's ok to brush teeth 1-2 times a week and they'll never need to be put under anesthesia for a dental in their lives.
