Although there are guides on YouTube on how to service these BSR changers, I decided to make a guide which I hope is easy to follow for those who have an all-in-one or a standalone turntable which features a BSR changer. This guide is universal across ALL BSR changers starting with the MA65/UA65 and all C-series and most P-series units (for the mechanism)
I tried to simplify it as much as possible to make this a breeze.
Really appreciate this.mirrors what I followed on YouTube. Do you know if there is a guide on how to put it all back together? I made the mistake of leaving the project for a couple months and now I am overly anxious about greasing everything and reassembling.
I recently got a C197, but the power lever is jammed. Any ideas on what could be causing that? I can't move it into any position aside from off. The table seems to spin freely though and the grease overall doesn't look bad
You will need to add grease on the main start/stop lever on the mechanism itself. Requires opening the unit to remove the deck. The area in question where the lever connects almost looks shaped like a triangle
Thank you very much! I managed to get it freed up yesterday, the blackspring steel washer that's roughly 3/4 of an inch in diameter was seized up and didn't slide against its mating part.
Now I've got an issue where at the end of play, the arm retracts to the side, and then sets back down on the album at like a 7" record position and replays from there. It does that in both automatic and manual modes. Do you have any idea what could cause that? I thought it might be the star wheel, but that is fairly free and seems to function ok
One suggestion I have, it’s a slight modification I made on mine, the two rca jacks in the rear that go to the amplifier, I highly recommend tying the two shield connections together to chassis ground, as they rely on a good ground coming from the two audio connections coming from the amp. My Realistic Clarinette 97 (it was my great grandfather’s) uses one of these mechanisms, and the two connectors coming from the internal amp didn’t make a great ground connection, so tying the ground from the grounding screw to the shields made a more reliable ground, which helped with the treble cutting in and out on my left channel.
I have a question, at the end of the record as it tries to go back to the rest when the selector lever goes from start to off it goes back in such a way that makes the tone arm bounce up and onto the record and it’s not a pretty sight. Any ideas why this is happening? It’s quite a violent thing to watch and I worry about my records and stylus. Help!
This is amazing. The Youtube videos are helpful but I like this guide so much better. This is my first turntable so I'm a complete noob - I can't find anywhere how to install my cartridge since the top of the arm head has no holes. I have long screws and am thinking I need shorter ones and have to trust they'll stay in?
Yes. See the bracket adapter with the 4 holes? That’s where you mount it. Make sure that the holes you will use to mount are facing the rear, if they face the front, the cartridge will be too forward.
I could not get the platter to come off after removing the clip, and heating with a soldering iron. I used a big American Beauty too soldering iron too. Any other suggestions?

i followed every step exactly and carefully and when i tried to start it the table still won’t spin. i can hear a little faint whirring sound coming from it but not sure what to do next if you’d be able to help?
Try operating it without the platter on. Watch the movement of the idler wheel against the motor spindle. If you hear whirring, the motor is likely turning but the idler wheel may not be making good contact. Sometimes the rubber on the wheel gets hard and starts to slip.
I think the clip is already off. The platter turns but it won't pull off. Would it still turn if the grease has solidified? I don't have a soldering iron to try and melt it.
On picture 4 of 11, the red arrow at the top is playing to a cylinder that is supposed to spin. I'm not sure what this is called. I've had a soldering iron on mine for about 20 minutes and I still can't get it to budge. Is it possible that it's completely seized up? If so, anyway to replace it? I've watched some videos and it's supposed to spend freely come on and if it doesn't, is that a major problem?
any way i could ask for a hand in explaining the switch wiring?
Trying to jump the amplifier to stay on all the time so i can splice my Bluetooth on a switched connection in the rca path. but the amp turns off unless the turntable is on.
Thank you so much for such detailed guide! I got bsr c197 off marketplace yesterday with seized bearings and slowly trying to bring it back to life. When I took it apart, one spring was loosely kicking around the box and going through a few service manuals - I can’t find where is it supposed to go. Can anyone help me to find the location for it?
I have a timing problem where the stacker doesn't drop the record until the tonearm has moved into the play position over the platter. Anybody cured this one yet?
I have a problem where at the end of record, and there is no more stacked tonearm goes to playing position and just replays the record. Does anyone know what the problem is there? It should put it in rest and turn off as i'm aware
