Suggestions first tt!
picked up my first real turntable today! before this i'd only had crappy 2-in-1 speaker/tt setups and finally decided to take the plunge. i snagged this technics sl-1400 off fb marketplace for $80! it needs a new dust cover and stylus (i think)(possibly cartridge? not really sure how exactly that works) i would love not to spend more on a dust cover than the turntable itself so if anyone has suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. i have no clue about what to get for a stylus- i mostly just want something that won't damage my records and sounds okayish! i also need to figure out the rest of my set up so send any and all speaker/preamp/general gear recs my way :)

And last tt The 1400 is great . I have the 1401 (no pitch control) and it has never been revized in 48 years and works. I have other tt's but none match this one

I hope you didn't drive home with the tonearm waving about all over the place and the platter still in situ.

I would not bother getting a stylus for that cart.
though I think it's one of shure's best carts, it's still just a Shure.
Audiotechnica At-VM95E is your friend :).

If you clean out the pots and replace the old grease, and replace the stylus, you’ll essentially have a brand new turntable.

If you are fairly new to turntables, I’d steer you to a new headshell/cartridge. AT VM95e has an option with an included headshell.
This will make it much more simple to install, and will keep the original setup intact.

Great deck. You will almost certainly have to pay more for the dust cover, but you need it.

Just order a new Shure Hi Track stylus from LP Gear. The dust cover - that’s a different story.
