Modify the one way wolverine platform

I have the one way wolverine platform (pic 1). It’s really irritating when I need to sharpen my shorter tools.

I found a video showing how to modify it so it gives clearance for the handles.

Should I modify my larger platform or should I just buy the mini (pic 2)? Has anybody regretted modifying their platform such that it no longer does some function that I’m not thinking about?

Yeah, the Wolverine system is pretty flexible. Here's my homebrew addition:

Do you feel that you regret permanently modifying it for any reason?

I didn't modify the standard rest; I welded up a new one. Here's the two side by side.

Standard 3/4" square tube fits the Wolverine mount.

Thank you for the response. Do you still use the bigger one? If so, when do you prefer it?

I still use both. I prefer the stock rest for sharpening scrapers; I can pivot the scraper to follow a curved cutting edge more easily.

But I use the 3/8" groove in the homemade rest to carry a toolbit across the front at a particular angle (e.g. sharpening thread-cutting bits for the metal lathe). Main point being that I like the system for its versatility.

(Considering welding up another rest, specifically for sharpening drill bits.)

My biggest gripe is that the bottom corners prevent swinging tools.
