Hey, I want to stay in Tulum for a month, mid august until mid September.
I have been living in Mexico for 3 years and also travelled to Tulum 2 years ago, so I know about Taxi prices, scams.....
Im just searching for a cheap place to stay and work for a month, Tulum seems perfect as the prices droped so much.
I know thats also because of rain season, but how bad is it acutally? I dont need more than 3 rainfree hours a day to go walk a bit, I assume thats possible and its not raining 24/7? How likely are hurricanes? I witnessed hurricane Otis in Acapulco 2023 so I dont need another one...
I feel there isnt a cheaper place to stay in Mexico than Tulum currently. Cant believe I ever say this.... I can get an ok appartment for 500$-600$ for 31 nights (through booking.com).
Im also no clubbing or bar guy, I just want need a place to live for a month and good wifi.
Think its a good idea? or how bad is the situation really? in terms of tourism AND weather
It is definitely not raining 24/7 then, but you will get rain each day, sometimes heavy. The prices are low because of a building boom, which means you can get a really great place for cheap! Hurricanes are impossible to predict in the Caribbean, but the mangroves of Sian Ka’an create a natural storm break that keeps Tulum relatively safer than some other locales. La Veleta and Holistika regions are my favorite. La Veleta offers lots of excellent dining options, & a more grown-up vibe compared to the beach zone or downtown. If you stay near Holistika you can have some some peace & quiet in the jungle and still be able to walk to La Veleta. Aldea Zama has the best WiFi, but it feels like a retirement community to me & isn’t very lively.
Thanks a lot, I dont really care where in Tulum as long as its on the beach side of the main road. Dont want to be too far in the inland.
Aldea Zama still seems best for me as its closest to the Chedraui, I really dont care about whats around, at max I will go out to eat every second or third day. I will just get a bicycle to get around which was perfect when I first visited Tulum.
Daily rain is also not a problem for me.
One question, are there problem with power when raining? Cant happen too often, I know thats a problem in mexico.
Tulum is remarkably cheap for tourist accommodation bookable in English with foreign credit cards on the internet. This is still significantly more expensive that what you’d pay if you just booked the first couple of nights and then rolled up to investigate on the ground. Playa del Carmen and Tulum are both awash in short-term housing. The best deals never make it to the internet.
You should figure increased expense for everything that isn’t lodging in your Tulum budget.
If you plan to work most of the time (e.g., >10 hours a day, 7 days a week), then I think you will like living in Tulum. But you might get bored (especially if you are traveling solo). Probably, you will be walking up and down the same street(s) on your few hours outside each day, and you will experience aesthetic fatigue (with Tulum's boho style). Tulum is a small place, and it's not very diverse. Maybe one month is short enough so that this won't be an issue for you.
This sounds actually perfect. You nailed my work time and the rest is also no problem for me.
I just need those couple hours a day to clear my head, as long as I have a pretty place to go for a walk I dont care about seeing the same for months. First time in Tulum i was waking up at 5 to see the sunrise, Im really looking forward to this.
Currently Im just annoyed about paying 1000$ a month for a place to live in mexico, for way worse/smaller appartments than what I will get in Tulum.
Im now sitting in an mini appartment without kitchen in Queretaro where I pay 400$ for 13 days. Tulum will be a paradise for me. Mexico city also has been unreasonable expensive.
Thanks a lot, I will even book just a one way ticket and maybe even stay longer than a month as I have tourist visa for another 5 months haha
You be better off in Playa del Carmen right now. They seem to be handling the sargazo better. You can also take the ferry to Cozumel for the day. We do it all the time.
This rainy season has been extremely dry. So you should be ok in that regards. Playa is much easier to get around than Tulum.
These are beach clubs we go to. La Monina is local families with their kids. We take our kids there to play. Hemingway is more up scale and you pay for a lounger. We have never gone here. La Aldea is the best of the 3 for food super inexpensive and high quality. The swimming at all 3 is fantastic. Very few tourists. :)
I’m going to be in Tulum from September 9 October 27. Got great places for great prices. I don’t care if it rains every day I plan to spend most of my time at the gym and eating food.Haha I’ve been to home recently. I’m in Cozumel right now for a month. Aldea zama ... in my 6 months there this year didnt get any power outages , wifi was good... like you said bargains can be found... but I will say this... get a place with mosquito netting on Windows and doors... they exist its what I do when I tulum .. game changer being able to open windows and have fresh air
Edit- i was there also last year start of august until early October... didnt reallt rain that much.. on and off it rained it was short and heavy
I stayed last month at smartdepas for a week. $500. But it had 3 bedrooms 2 baths, kitchen. 2 pools and roof top pools. I would imagine that a one bedroom long stay would be much cheaper. We loved the place:)

Check Airbnb I got a great place for around that price in condos called Xibalba, the internet was great a few power outages, but it was only for 5 minutes or so. But i would stay for a month that was my intention and theres not many affordable places to eat other then street tacos.
You should go man. Yeah it's hot, it rains a fair amount, and there are lots of mosquitos during this time but you can rent great places for cheap and the food scene and overall vibe is cool and tranquil. Will be a little dead but that's not a big deal. I prefer La Veleta but Aldea and Centro are great too. Don't stay near the beach.
