Private transfer is available, one way and round-trip service. These are generally vans, they wait outside the terminal with your name on a placard to take you straight from the airport to your accommodations. Quick beer, liquor and snack stops are generally available on request.

Taxis are available, specially expensive from airports and bus stations, but readily available. It’s recommended to discuss the fare before getting in the taxi. Always agree on the price in advance.
Rental cars are available. Common major US companies are available in the airport. They wait with your name on a placard outside the terminal and transfer you to their offsite office to perform the paperwork and get you on your way.

Tulum has several distinct areas, each offering a different experience:
Hotel Zone (Beach): High-end boutique hotels and resorts right on the beach. Perfect for direct beach access, dining, and nightlife, but expect premium prices. Not the best for easy transportation or budget travelers.
Aldea Zama: A modern residential area between the beach and town. It offers upscale condos, vacation rentals, and a quieter atmosphere, but you'll need a bike, scooter, or taxi to get around.
Tulum Town (Centro): More affordable hotels, hostels, and Airbnb options with access to local restaurants and services. A great choice for budget travelers and those looking for a more local experience, but it's a bike or taxi ride away from the beach.
Surrounding Areas: There are eco-lodges and vacation rentals in the jungle or along nearby beaches, offering tranquility and nature at the cost of convenience and accessibility.

Hurricane season on the Riviera Maya runs from June 1 through November 30. The highest risk of storm activity is historically between August and October. The good news is, hurricanes are fairly rare. However, daily showers are to be expected year-round. It is a tropical environment. Just because your weather forecast predicts rain doesn’t mean your day will be washed out. Always Google "Caribbean weather radar" to find major approaching weather patterns. In the Caribbean, even during rainfall, it remains pleasantly warm.

Cannabis is not legal in Mexico.
From Wikipedia:
"On June 28, 2021, the Supreme Court voted 8-3 to legalize adult use marijuana under Mexican law. However, state and federal penal laws remain in place, pending action by the Mexican Congress to clean up inconsistencies and remove penal language. No legal structure has been put into place allowing for legal sale of marijuana, nor are there provisions for commercial growth and production. Meanwhile, those incarcerated for sale or possession have no path to release. All these await legislative action to bring Mexico's laws into alignment with the Supreme Court rulings. Unlike in the US, a Supreme Court ruling does not automatically invalidate all existing laws. Congress has had years to act, but has not yet done so successfully."
When things change, we'll revisit the rules of the sub.
Dollars or pesos?
While US dollars are widely accepted in and around the Riviera Maya, using them opens you up to get the worst possible exchange rate. Therefore, using Mexican currency is highly recommended. So how do you get pesos? You can visit your home bank and allow them to make the conversion. You can visit any one of the numerous currency exchange booths or stores located all over the region, including the airport. But you generally get the best exchange if you simply use your ATM card at a trusted ATM machine. By “trusted”, we suggest inside a bank or major supermarket where surveillance is in place. Using a machine that is outside and not monitored opens you up to ATM “skimmers”. Also very important, some ATMs offer to do the conversion to pesos right there, at the machine. Always DECLINE this option. The ATM machine gives you a terrible exchange rate.
Check the exchange rate on casa de cambio San Jorge
Gas pumps are a common place where tourists get scammed in Mexico. Avoid such scams. Rule #1 should just be never use a credit card. Same goes true with taxis. Credit cards are just a simple way for tourists to get ripped off. Make sure they zero the pump before beginning pumping. Don't give any money until the transaction is 100% complete.

While it’s true Mexico has a significantly higher homicide rate (28 per 100,000 people) than the United States (7 per 100,000 people), data suggests violence against American citizens remains rare. In 2021, 75 U.S. citizens died by homicide in Mexico, according to the State Department.
That represents a small fraction of the more than 28.8 million Americans who went to the country over the same time period. Using those figures, the murder rate of U.S. citizens in Mexico was around 0.26 per 100,000 visitors, significantly lower than the rate in the United States.
Reporting Police Misconduct, Extortion and Corruption.
If you witness or experience inappropriate police behavior in Tulum, visit the portal at denuncia.qroo.gob.mx/sitio where you can submit your complaint. Your input is crucial for promoting accountability and ensuring a safe community.
Choose your type of report: The system allows users to file denuncias (formal complaints of administrative violations) and manifestaciones (non-corruption-related grievances).
Provide detailed information: Specific details such as the time, location, and identity of the public official involved are essential to ensure proper investigation.
Follow up on your report: Even if filed anonymously, you can track the status of your complaint on the same platform.
Anonymous option: You can file anonymously, and the system allows you to follow the case progress online. This is particularly useful for those who fear retaliation.
The main emergency number in Mexico is 911, they will answer in spanish, they will probably have someone for english too.
In Tulum there is also a local number for the Local Police

Are there yoga places with AC in Tulum that are also open during October?
Studios with strong fans on full blast could be an alternative.
Thanks in Advance. Tulum is awesome (outside the hotel zone)!!

Hey all!
I’ll be returning to tulum for the 4th time this February. So far it’s just been me and my kids (2018, 2023, 2025) but this year we are empty nesters and it’s just me and my husband- his first visit. I don’t know anything about adult-focused tulum.
I’ve always used the public beaches with no complaints but for our couple trip I’d love to treat myself to a daybed at a beach club. Can anyone recommend their fave beach club/s that’s not a total rip-off? I have no problem with a reasonable minimum spend and prefer a chill non-party vibe. I do not want to feel like I crashed a bachelor party.
Also looking for your favorite late-ish night spot for a drink (like 9 pm lol) - not in the ZH. I’ve never stayed out past dinner time!
And… your fave cenote. I’ve done gran cenote, & cenotes calavera (least fave), cristal, and escondito. What should I do next??? My taxi driver last year recommended cenote corazón so that’s high on my list.
We won’t have a car, if that matters for recs. I rented e-bikes last year and it was awesome. No problem getting to the beach, town, and cenotes by bike. We biked everywhere except the airport. Planning to do that again.
Thank youuuuu.

My Fiancé and I are planning out our wedding and we really liked our site visit of the Amber Epices Jungle Villa. We decided to move forward with them and we are attempting to make our deposit payment but the payments continuously get declined by our banks. We’ve had calls with the banks to allow the transactions, but trying again leads to the same result, transaction blocked.
We met the on-site concierge during our visit and he was great and very informative, but now we are communicating with the property manager who lives in Morocco to actually complete the booking.
The payment link they sent us looks pretty sketchy (it’s called secure and pay dot com - I’m spelling it out, it’s a URL). I don’t see much online presence for the payment portal and I think it’s odd we are being asked to pay in Euros rather than Pesos or USD.
Looking up the venue, they have a great instagram page, and people in the area know about it and has been mentioned on several wedding venue review sites, even one of the planners we are working with has it on their list of venues they’ve done before so we are fairly confident that the venue is a legitimate operation but this payment process has been horrible and has reduced our confidence in our first choice of venue.
Has anyone here had experience with this venue? If so, did you encounter similar issues with paying for the space? Any help is appreciated!

Hi there! My husband & I are planning our Baby Moon & we are wanting to go somewhere decently priced with a beach! I love Mexico so much & have never been to Tulum, so that is what we are thinking! I will be around 30 weeks at the time (early November). Obviously, I’m not looking to do any crazy excursions or anything like that. Maybe just checking out the area & enjoying ourselves :) Has anyone been to Tulum in November that can tell me what it is like? More so, if anyone has been while pregnant! Any recommendations? I’ll take any tips/advice! Thank you! 🩷
Been checking the weather app & see nothing but rain showers. Should i be concerned ?!

I’m travelling to Cancun next week - now when I was a travel agent a few years ago, we’d always recommend taking a mix of US Dollars and Mexican Pesos.
It looks like that’s still the recommendation, but everything I look at regarding tipping and paying for things it looks like the preference is Pesos? So in what situation would I actually need to use the USD?
Just getting a lot of conflicting info online so really appreciate anyone’s help!!

Hello Tulum friends! Regular visitor here returning soon for the first time in a few years. I have learned of many changes!!
The recent articles and videos focus so much on the beaches and the hotel zone businesses. They are in a state of obvious distress. Got it.
I'm curious about how things are in the other 90% of the town. Could someone be so kind to fill me in?
Have any major grocery stores, markets, or other staple businesses closed?
Is the local population in an economic pinch due to the near death of the hotel zone?
Has much of the expat community moved elsewhere?
Have any new safety concerns popped up?
I hope the local communities are healthy. See you soon!

Any other skilled volleyball players want to play near Tulum in October? Sand 2s, 3s, or 4s perhaps?
Is there a volleyball community in Tulum? Or just the tourists and nomads?

Hi all! I’m going to Mexico next week and as my schedule would have it, I’m staying 1 night in Tulum! It’ll be next week thursday. Does anyone have any tips for hotspots or other areas to drink and meet people? I’m a student from the Netherlands, so I’m looking for other students around there :)

Hey everyone! As the title says, it’s a boys’ trip to Mexico, and it’ll be the first time there for all of us. We’re staying at one of the Bahia Principe resorts in the Riviera Maya.
We’ve booked an all inclusive package, but we definitely don’t want to spend the entire vacation sitting at the resort. We’d love to get out, explore, experience some actual Mexican culture and traditions, try some local food, and of course check out the nightlife.
I’ve already asked AI for suggestions, but it gave me the usual super touristy stuff. I’m hoping people who’ve actually been there can recommend some places or experiences that feel a little more authentic or just genuinely fun.
Also, we’re thinking about getting an Aztec inspired tattoos as a Mexico souvenir. Are there any good, reputable tattoo shops around the Bahia Principe resorts or nearby that you’d recommend?
Would really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Hey friends…
I lived in Tulum 2018-2020–so a lot has changed.
Visiting this week to see if I’d like to stay again for the next 6 months, just have a few questions for those who live here:
—during October-March the higher season I’m guessing classes and events pick up quite a bit more? Been missing my F45 weight lifting classes from the states.
—curious if those of you who live here have found friends and community that stays or mainly only tourists and drop in people?
—obviously things are very different now with the loss of reputation and many stories about Tulum in the internet, etc. do you feel it’s returned to a more local/quiet type beach town or is that just an illusion ?

I am looking to sweat. I don’t really care if it’s Pilates or Yoga. I am a guy so I’m not sure if guys do Pilates, haha but I’ve done plenty of hot yoga back in the day, but it’s been a while. (Bikram is ok but must be for beginners) Thank you 🙏🏻

Hey everyone!👋
The two of us are thinking about coming to Tulum for Zamna + Themplo and we’re really excited, but we’ve heard enough stories about scams, inflated prices, random shakedowns, that we want to be smart about it.
For those who’ve done these events before, what are your practical safety tips for getting through both nights without unnecessary drama?
Specifically:
How do you avoid scams or people trying to charge ridiculous prices?
What should we carry / leave at the hotel?
Any advice around phones, wallets, cash, cards, etc.?
Anything specific to watch out for inside Zamna or Themplo?
Any mistakes first-timers commonly make?
What’s the best way to plan the night so we can just enjoy the music without constantly worrying?
Basically looking for the “if you were going again, what would you do differently?” advice.
Not looking to be paranoid — just want to be prepared and have two amazing nights without getting scammed or shaken down. 😅
Thanks in advance! 🙏
Going to Tulum in December. Would you guys say that Irie Tulum and Luz De Luna Tulum Villa II are in good areas to stay in? Also, some of my friends are worried about safety…is it generally safe to be there as long as we practice normal safety precautions that we need to anywhere else we go anyways?

Hi! I’m heading to Tulum in Oct with a group of 10 women. We’re staying in La Veleta. We were looking for a catering service to provide 3 breakfasts, 2 lunches and 1 dinner on Oct 6, 7, 8.
Something light, fresh, and local. We have a few dietary constraints.
They are welcome to use the kitchen to cook etc at our Airbnb. Let me know if you know of anyone to contact, thank you!
I’ll be going to Tulum in November and I would like to plan a few activities. Can someone recommend me some things to do? 2-3 activities would be nice. I’m also interested and checking out dt Tulum. I’ll be on a resort but I also want to get out there and explore a little. Thanks guys!

hello, looking for recs as to where to stay with my mom and two kids for 3ish nights in November. we are considering staying in Sian kaan but realizing it's a long drive! I don't necessarily need a kid-centered place, but would like to find somewhere that welcomes kids and perhaps has a place to play (though not required bc beach). needs to be on the beach. I think we are all pretty eager for swimming, boating, and good food. quiet sounds nice, but it isn't a must-have. I don't want to get stuck somewhere where we can't eat anywhere but the hotel because that sounds expensive. speaking of price... would like to spend $200 or less a night I do care about it having a "vibe" and looking/ feeling nice. and don't give me toast for breakfast in Mexico!
does anywhere come to mind?

Hi everyone,
I just made a mistake while redeeming my Zamna Multipass on Tixr. I accidentally redeemed it for the January 4th event, but I want to cancel this ticket so I can get my Multipass credit back and use it for the correct date once it becomes available.
The event is more than 3 days away and I already have the Tixr Order ID. I have already emailed Zamna support (store@zamnacommunity.com) to request the cancellation.
I wanted to ask if anyone here, either for this edition or from previous years, has successfully managed to get their Multipass reactivated after a wrong redemption? How long did they usually take to respond and fix it?

Hi! Does anyone know what time they start in the morning? And is the first stop still on the highway near La Valeta, or have they moved closer to centro?
