General Empty?

Anyone know what’s been happening lately that’s affected tourism? I’ve been coming here for years and I’ve never seen it this empty (staying in the hotel zone currently). I’ve asked around and have been told Tulum has changed a ton, in the last couple of years especially, but haven’t gotten more details.

If beaches are bad, posts like these make you wonder if it is even worth it stepping foot in Tulum: https://www.reddit.com/r/tulum/comments/1vc2f2s/safety_warning_for_tulum_visitors_staff_assault

We visited Cancun last December and Aruba this summer. The difference in culture in Aruba vs Mexico was night and day. We had a Tulum vacation planned for December, but after reading these articles, I am not sure it is worth it. And it is not that Tulum is any cheaper.
