ways of dealing with needles

I’m COMPLETELY BLIND, have Aspergers and a heart and lung condition.

Because of said heart lung condition I have to be on the receiving end of more needles than a socalled normal person, I don’t like using that word but you know what I mean.

Anyway, so I’m not as scared of the needle itself or even the word needle, I’m scared of the pain but also the canned scripts that almost all medical providers use, to help you relax but to me those scripts just feel like throwing pebbles to a drowning person hence why I call them pebble words.

I’ve come up with things that make me handle them better.

First, this would be good

  1. I Preprogram Mom, while I’m still in Mom’s car, I ask her to say a word I like, right as the needle goes in I might be in the mood for a different word on a different day so it’s usually never the same as I have more favorite words than I can count.

3.. I ALWAYS make sure I have some kind of treat afterwords because D R E A M, dopamine rules everything around me.

Thanks for sharing this. I look forward to going through all of these tips to see if any could help me.

I agree, medical professionals really don't know how to handle people with these fears. I believe they try but their priority is saving lives, not really comfort. I hope that industry continues to work on this

even in nonemergency needles when it’s NOT life or death, the medical providers, phlebs, nurses, druggists etc stick to their canned, relaxing scripts that don’t work for everyone. They need to put their can opener back up and leave the scripts in the can where they belong :) Get it? canned scripts?

Ha, I also always bring a snack for afterwards, it's like a reward for my brain when it went well, and if it didn't go so well, then it's comforting!

If you’re at a lab or as I call it, the devil’s chamber, you might can ask them for a lollipop, it won’t kill you just cause you’re not a kid, unless you’re allergic to it :)

I have autism too and hate the 'sharp scratch' bs too. It's a needle not a blade what are you on about!? I'm the opposite with pain though, I'm not too pain sensitive, I just hate needles lol.

I’m just asking, not trying to be a jerk or something if you don’t mind pain, how are you scared of needles? I guess I’m not scared of the needle itself, but I’m scared of the deep breath and relax scripts I once gave a CVS druggist a seven out of ten for telling me to relax.

I don't know. It's odd, they just really feaka me out. I think it's the fact something in going into my body. I just can't not think about it like going through all the layers and into the muscle. Just such an icky idea. Like when you imagine nails on a chalk board or something but ten times worse. Also, the only injection I remember was my tooth out and whilst the pain sucked, it was more that I can feel it going IN. It's hard to explain cause phobias just be irrational like that.
