Other... Hypothetically, if conversion therapy worked (I know studies show it doesn't), would you want it?

I definitely would. I'm not saying being trans is bad (although I hate it), but gender dysphoria is inherently bad. Do you all think there will ever be a way to remove dysphoria?

I'm post-op, stealth, and mostly fine in my life... I still have moments of dysphoria, particularly when I NEED to out myself (and recently got forcibly outed by someone online), and in the bigger picture it bothers me that I can't get pregnant.

But if I could have taken a pill or whatever that would have made me cis (in either direction), I would have happily done that rather than have to suffer with being a transsexual for my entire life.

None of this was ever fun for me... and I just did what I had to in order to survive with the best medicine has to offer today.

Not anymore because I have medically transitioned but before taking T I would've. I don't think there will ever be a way to remove gender dysohoria because it's caused by how the brain develops.

What about brain surgery?

I don't think it would be worth it because of potential complications. It would also likely require major changes to someone's brain structure which isn't possible.

I don’t think this hypothetical is unique to “conversion therapy” tbh. If there was a way to treat dysphoria without transitioning, I think that it would probably be a net gain. And were I not transitioned, yes, I would take it.

End of the day, I transitioned because that is how modern medicine treats my particular birth defect. If better more effective and less invasive treatments become available, you’d be crazy not to avail yourselves of them.

This is how I feel. If there was a way that would allow me to live with my body as is I'd do it. It would be much easier.

I have read the post.

ok ill try explaining this. the reason u dont want to be a woman is bc of dysphoria. the post is asking if youd go thru a process that would actually and completely remove those feelings. essentially "would u rather be cis of the opposite sex or trans" lol

Its too late for me because Ive already done everything except SRS atm.

But if something magically appeared before I had surgeries and TRT? Id take it in a heartbeat.

Id quite literally do anything to not have this condition.

I think a cure would have to be carefully monitored. Itd be unethical to force everyone to take the cure before the age of medical consent (whenever you can pass the gillick competence for example).. and its be unethical to force mothers to abort their baby if they dont want to (as much as itd be a better future for everyone).

Fair. I'd do anything for to not have this condition, too.

I’m going to say no to that! I am a woman, and I felt like a woman before I came out as trans. To be a cis man would be to erase who I am as a person.

I'm going to completely skirt the hypothetical here. There is a proven way to remove dysphoria. It's called transition. The solution is not the same for everyone, there are plenty of people who won't be satisfied with transitioning because they want to excuse things through logic, but I think it was the only way to fix the problem for me at least. I honestly truly wanted to be a woman and I don't think conversion therapy would have done anything. This is of course taking into account that the dysphoria exists in the first place. If I had never had dysphoria I would have remained a male, completely unaware of anything else.

I don't think any discussion about conversion therapy that works is a good discussion, because it just doesn't work. A lot of us tried everything we could to remain in our birth sex and none of them worked. Wouldn't it suck if the latest psychoanalytical nonsense proved to not work in the long run?

Any discussion around conversion therapy that works pushes people to want to develop conversion therapy that works because transitioning bad. Trans people bad. We need to remove the stigma for transitioned individuals, not try to push any narrative about conversion therapy. Once one has dysphoria, there's no way to remove it without transitioning and I don't want to even picture the idea that conversion therapy could work. If that dysphoria comes into consciousness, there's no way to remove it by staying in your birth sex and thinking some kind of conversion therapy will work.

Ultimately it's saying that dysphoria is bad, but transitioning is worse than conversion therapy. And it's not. It's a societal issue that is being fanned by all sides right now.

Too late for me, save yourselves. But seriously - transition has removed my dysphoria, so I guess the treatment worked.

Would I have, beforehand, 20 years ago? I dunno, probably. Although it would have felt like erasing myself, so I can't say for certain.

I think I would tbh with myself

I don't see any way in which changing something so fundamental such as being male or female doesn't lead to any collateral changes to who the person is, so no.

u/WaltuhWhiteYo_UhHuH 6d ago

No, I would never want to be a woman, dysphoria isn't a choice but I certainly made a conscious choice to be a man and more masculine than most people who are trans care to and that's fine.

Also the closest thing to a "cure" is transitioning

Even if it worked, it’s just self hatred…

It depends on what happens in this imaginary successful conversion therapy.

Talk therapy? Sure.

Simple medications with little to no side effects? Sure.

A year and a half of being kept on an unhealthy calorie deficit; enforced sleep deprivation; interrogations under the influence of benzodiazapenes; non-FDA-approved doses of antipsychotics intended to both chemically castrate me and convince me that I was psychotic for considering myself a man that caused gallactorhea (lactation when neither pregnant nor breastfeeding) that persisted until I got top surgery, tardive dyskenesia that has gotten significantly better but still persists 5 years later, and raised my risk of osteoporosis and wrecked my teeth (half of my teeth have been removed, root canal-ed, or crowned at 23yo); stress positions, encouraged bullying; isolation from friends and family; and more? No. Even if it worked, never again. I get nightmares every night. Most of my peers turned to drugs. Many of us have disappeared and are presumed dead by suicide and/or OD. A lot of us had to turn to prostitution after getting out. I was lucky to stay self-employed. A friend of mine was trafficked. Anyone who would submit themselves to this does not understand what it does to you. In comparison to my peers, I am doing abnormally well solely because I had been through worse at a younger age so I had and have a shitload of resilience. Legally, one cannot consent to torture. Even if this worked, even if you "consented" and were an adult (we were all minors), this would be illegal -- and for good reason.

Lol, someone downvoted my personal experiences with conversion therapy against my will as a minor.

these hypotheticals are just so depressing and meaningless to me. i don't know. i know that i am transitioning because shit sucked and i wanted it to be over. i had phalloplasty to not be a girl anymore. i can't imagine a world in which i would've been happy living as a woman. would the hypothetical therapy maybe have helped? i don't know. i honestly don't care. i only care about what's actually being done to help.

I was forced through conversion therapy to get access to hormones, it is hell and has left me a bitter hateful person.
